That photo is like 8 years old, mind you. I don't look quite so teenaged anymore. Maybe it's time to hack off the mane, though, I'd forgotten how clean and shiny it used to be.

i need a good 'product' that would basically mimic 3-4 days of not showering

max, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i.e. my hair is weird and floppy right after its washed but if i dont wash it for a few days it gets less floppy and more malleable

max, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i used to use twisted taffy and crude clay from sebastian. one left a shinier finish, while the other was totally matte (can't remember which is which).

lauren, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

as long as it doesnt get stiff and crunchy i dont really care about shine

max, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

there's always good old murray's.

elmo you are so beautiful!

Rubyredd, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

can anyone recommend a clear gloss? i was looking at the drug store the other day, i swear there used to be a garnier or clairol one but did not see it.

tehresa, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I need a haircut v v badly. There is a fabu gay man who lives down the street from me who cuts hair at his home in exchange for doing yard work for him or whatever. I think I might give him a shot. His name is "J0hn Cava1ier".

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, i need hair advice please!

i've been going to a decent place but ended up with a pretty stodgy stylist, so i'm not loving my hair. am going to a hip edgy place tomorrow, so would like thoughts on what i should ask for. i don't love my hair, but several people have said how much they like it with no prompting.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/colettes/2557532070/

(i'm in the glasses)

any thoughts? i like having bangs of some sort, but my instinct would probably be to go a lot shorter...

colette, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I had that haircut for a while at age 22, elmo. Lolz.

^^^yes. Please post it here if you find anything like this elsewhere.

C0L1N B..., Tuesday, 24 June 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

colette, I imagine you could go a bunch shorter with good results...but then again, I operate on this theory that women have much more room for error as far as haircuts go when compared to guys; simply b/c women's faces are "prettier", and generally more striking than are guys'. To be honest, the only time that I remember looking at a woman's haircut and thinking that it was kinda meh and did not flatter the rest of her appearance has been when someone was sporting a particularly egregiously trendy haircut, or an especially bizarre throwback to some bygone era of hairspray, teasing, permed-out craziness.

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 18:34 (fifteen years ago) link

guys i have the same "problem" in that my hair looks better after a couple of days of unwashing than it does the day i shampoo it. i had some goop that worked pretty well which an ex- passed onto me, but it got confiscated at the airport a couple weeks ago, and i can't for the life of me remember what the hell it was called, or who makes it...

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 18:37 (fifteen years ago) link

colette - since you can't make it any longer*, do you have photos of short cuts you like? i'm certain that you would look lovely with a very very short cut, why not go for it?

*unless you get extensions and honestly, who does this aside from celebrities/actorz?

as for hair goop i have v short hair and i use aveda molding clay for men (it's matte and doesn't make my hair look greasy but makes it look mussed up enough to mimic several days of not-washing)

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

also smells lovely

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:08 (fifteen years ago) link

that sounds great, but aveda stuff is super expensive, though, right? what is something relatively cheap, like rite-aid/walgreen's cheap, and that is still effective in this way, but is not a bucket of lard or something?

I had a friend who used to put shaving products in his hair...

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:11 (fifteen years ago) link

garnier's surf hair goop is OK at making my hair look messy, and it's often free after rebate at walgreens...

colette, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a little expensive, but if you only use like a pea-sized glop every other day, it lasts months and months. i think the stuff i bought was ~$20 and it has lasted 3 months so far with two people using it.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:13 (fifteen years ago) link

xp - and there is a ton left

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i used to use some aveda lotion on my windburnt face that smelled amazing

funny thing is, i am not even vaguely metrosexual; i usually leave the house looking like some variety of disreputable bum, but i am fixated on certain "beauty" regimens-- like lately i refuse to bathe with any other soap except this one

ah, okay...i wish i could remember the name of the glop that i was using, b/c it was similar...it wasn't a "little dab'll do you", but more like a speck and a half. i think i could have stretched it out for a year or so, at least.

along the same lines, i'm a big fan of l'occitane soaps, for washing my face; I could probably make a bar of that last for a decade...plus it comes in those cool metal tins

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

plus the l'occitane soap that i've used in the past smells like god's saliva!

dell, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 19:20 (fifteen years ago) link

max, i am a big fan of spray wax. it works like a pomade/paste but is less heavy. but you still get the malleability i think you are looking for. i have one from the 'beyond the zone' line at sally's that is pretty cheap (i think it is supposed to be generic bed head, which would obv. be more expensive).

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 04:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I liked Matrix's "Dirty Trix" pomade, when my hairs were short. It might be a bit $$$ tho?

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:01 (fifteen years ago) link

And I really liked the bed head spray wax, too...now I all want to buy the Sally's version even though it would do shit for my hair at its current length.

Abbott, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i got clairol natural instincts 'shine happy' at target yesterday. will report back on dullness improvement/lack thereof.

tehresa, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I bought some of those John Frieda shampoo, conditioner and anti-frizz serum for Redheads and it's made my hair VERY soft and nice, I like it. Unfortunately the need for a hair cut/colour is so great no one can tell that my hair is actually super soft and awesome :( Best part: shampoo/conditioner was $1 each at Dollarama because they are re-doing the packaging and selling old stock cheap.

Finefinemusic, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i can not rep enough for the sulfate-free shampoo! using giovanni atm bc devacurl is $$$$ and even though devacurl makes softer hair, i'm still sold on sulfate-free forever.

dollarama!

i just had to yell dollarama!!

I love Dollarama! I would estimate 18% of all my stuff is from there or made using things from there. It's the best place ever.

perhaps, but DOLLARSTORE!!! is an attempted meme that ethan and i will not let die.

tza, john frieda has a line of glazes for different color hair types. i use the medium blonde on my light blonde hair and I can really see a diff. each time i use it. my hair color goes from flat and dry looking to shiny and multidimensional.

naturallycurly dot com has definitely been helpful in coming to terms with my 2b/c waves (yah I know my hair type, who am I kidding).

still not sure whether I'm a 2c or a 3a

sarahell, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link

but through that site I found another that had easy tutorials for retro hairstyles for curly hair, and then I realized that there were combs and bobby pins that are not tiny, so that I can actually do things with my hair.

sarahell, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 02:16 (seven years ago) link

i haven't cut my hair since my last post, and boyyyy is it looking raggeddy as fuck

1. i don't wanna spend $100 on my hair (and going anywhere other then the guy i've been seeing would get me a haircut i couldn't up-keep, or could've cut myself)
2. i bleached my hair last may in order to dye it lavender, but my usual 'this is too hard, fuck it' attitude kicked in as i was applying the bleach so i did a pretty horrendous job of it and will let myself be too easily shamed by my stylist if i go see him
3. i've been in an extended phase of trying to look invisible, which means i put no effort into how i look and tying my hair in a topknot is all i can bothered to do. if i go back to the great cut i got last time, i'll have to put some effort into it everyday.

i do, however, really like what the bleach did to my hair - gave it lots more body and texture, along with damage and split ends.

i finally got one of those tangle-teezer rip-offs and it is a miracle worker.

two years pass...

I think the secret to good hair is just in the water you wash it with, not so much the products you use. Italian water gave me amazing hair that never got greasy. Faroe Islands water also great.

Now I want to get one of those fancy water filters for my shower head.

just1n3, Friday, 27 September 2019 22:51 (four years ago) link

Yes!!! Italian water was noticeably different for me too. Our water is super hard.

kinder, Saturday, 28 September 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

keep putting off getting highlights done because it always looks stripey the first time (old ones have long grown out)

kinder, Saturday, 28 September 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link

The water where I am currently is super hard too and I think it's causing more of my hair to fall out/break. I just discussed this with an Italian (from Campania) who was also talking about her hair falling out here and I was like IT HAS TO BE THE WATER.

My most recent shampoo love this year is klorane in mango butter. I've tried other flavors but I love love love this one.

Yerac, Saturday, 28 September 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

I am also constantly thinking about when I should try to convert over and try completely white hair. I think it's about 80% grey now on the top and sides, the lower back is still mostly dark brown. I've been dying it since I was 16 but it's such a pain. It's past my shoulder blades so i would need to lop most of it off. I've been kind of obsessed with Loora Wang's hair (shaved on the sides, long on top) ever since I saw those tik toks of her and her sister.

Yerac, Saturday, 28 September 2019 18:08 (four years ago) link

I never thought much about going grey until my mum recently stopped dyeing her hair and I was like oh yeah I dig that

just1n3, Sunday, 29 September 2019 03:36 (four years ago) link

At this point I think the hair will maybe be the last thing for me. As problems go it's an OK one but I do agonize over it. Wearing wigs for the rest of my life, I guess I would be OK with it, but at some point I should find someone I can trust and find out what my practical options are.

two years pass...

hair product update

i splurged on Jonathan Van Ness “Air Dry Creme” from his new JVN line of products (u can get it at Sephora)

holy cats. soft shiny bouncy curls w no scrunching & no hair dryer. as advertised! 10/10 no notes.

i have naturally curly hair but its dry and thin & trashed from home box dye. i used about a quarter-size amt, worked through damp hair concentrating on ends, combed it through w a wide tooth comb, gently scrunched the ends just to start the curl…boom. thats it.

shiny af, nice piecey curls, not crunchy or anything.

i tried it one time scrunching a lot but it doesnt seem to need it? works better if you just leave it alone imo - at least if you already have a curl pattern of some kind

(this is not an ad, i swear) i love this stuff!
