Steve Moore demos from 2003 are getting a vinyl release next month. These were only available on cdr a few years back, I've never heard them so look forward to this. The Henge was really good.

http://www.hlava-temple.com/images/moore_cover_big.jpg You may have already heard Steve Moore's work as one-half of the unbelievably awesome prog-rock instrumental duo Zombi, or through his phenomenal first solo-album called "The Henge" (Relapse/Static Caravan, 2007). Now Moore gives us "Demo 2003," a re-issue of his first solo recordings from the turn of the millenium. In contrast to Zombi's tightly structured progressive epics, "Demo 2003" is an exploratory, psychedelic meditation. Over the course of its 10 tracks, including the previously unreleased "Fever Dream", "Demo 2003" explores psychedelic paths through dark atmospheres and drifting harmonies. Smaller in scale than "The Henge," these tracks document Moore's initial fascination with analog synthesizers, focusing more on experimental timbres and droning ambience than on composition or form. This is why this long-player becomes the soundtrack of the mind. It is paranoid, monumental music that hypnotizes the listener with an unholy mix of gloomy, nightmarish, electronic ambiences and the neverending and almighty cosmic beauty.
Limited to 500 copies!

I don't think Spirit Animal is as good as Cosmos. But then again... Cosmos was a pretty high benchmark. Maybe I should just listen to it a bit more and see if it grows on me. You know, play twice before listening and all that.

Limited to 1000 copies, Majeure's debut isn't expected to be available too long given that it's a project of Zombi's drummer, A.E. Paterra, and their stuff is so in demand these days. Plus it's totally amazing! More rhythmically focused than the stuff his main band have been doing for the past few years, the three side-long odysseys that make up this double LP eschew the more proggy stop-start stuff in favour of sticking a pin in the sky, focusing on a star and propelling you right the fuck there. He's dropped the horror for a little bit of star gazing.. Although John Carpenter still frequently comes to mind. At various points I'm also reminded of the mint Vangelis tune that plays over the Blade Runner credits, Detroit techno, classic electro, the cosmic disco of prime Cerrone, Moroder etc. etc. Klaus Schulze more than deserves a mention too, especially as Timespan sounds like it could easily pass for one of his album titles. Totally stompin' analogue synth heaven and the best thing I've heard either he or Steve Moore do since their brilliant early releases. And it's all packaged up in a lavish sci-fi themed gatefold sleeve that fits the sounds a treat, comes with an MP3 download code and sports a tasteful geometric etching on the fourth side.

It's like the missing link between Lindstrom and, you know, *real* prog. And it's awesome.
Not as dance-oriented as that review implies, but still awesome. (Take that with a grain of salt, as I didn't hear the dance influence in Black Meteoric Star, either.)
― Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 24 October 2009 18:47 (fourteen years ago) link
hehe everything is Lindstrom to you!
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 18:56 (fourteen years ago) link
I think I might have a new obsession.
But it is pretty Lindstromy, you have to admit. Or rather, Lindstrom and this are exploring pretty similar ground - i.e. the strange hinterland between synth-prog and EDM.

― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 October 2009 19:24 (fourteen years ago) link
I have all the Zombi, but don't know the Steve Moore.
However, at the moment I am too busy leaping up and down on my bed, striking courageous and adventurous poses while staring off into space and listening to Vangelis. It just has to be done sometimes.

Nah, I'm sure they listened to at least one or two songs. However, being totally unfamiliar with anything referenced within (Goblin, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, etc.) - they just went for the only vaguely proggy sounding reference they could think of.

So there is a new Majeure album out...and it's pretty good. I'm not sure how it stacks up with Timespan which I loved. I thought that even the Timespan remix album was pretty incredible. I need more time with Solar Maximum but for the most part it's pretty much an extension of the first one.

― Non-Stop Erotic Calculus (bmus), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link
not as good as timespan imo but timespan is so so great. still a darn good record tho. also the 'synthesizer of the gods' ep is top hole
i'd like to hear them both extend themselves a bit more on their solo stuff. surely moore has another 'henge' (in spirit if not necessarily in sound) in him somewhere
― boo-hoo-ty sapperticker (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link
I agree, Timespan would be awfully hard to match.
Henge certainly is great. Definitely one of the only albums out of this genre to legitimately scare me. Not that that is the ultimate goal here. But I think it even has a jump-scare moment in there somewhere.
I haven't heard Synthesizer of the Gods. That's a Majeure EP?

The new Steve Moore album Beloved Exile is good in general but I especially love the last track, “My Time Among the Snake Lords,” and how it shapeshifts seamlessly throughout - I think it might be the longest solo track he’s recorded? I may be wrong.
