Did anyone else know that Jan Morris (the travel writer) used to be James MOrris? That blew my mind.

I don't know why any of this stuff is suprising to anybody in 2004.

I think that first picture is Thurston Howell, III.

I forgot the name of the book, I think Analog Days? About the early days of Moog and analog synthesis in general. It has some amazing stuff about Wendy Carlos. About how she started hormone treatment but would wear a fake beard to public appearances.

Anyway, the music's great, especially the vocoder stuff on A Clockwork Orange and the full version of Timesteps, which isn't on the CD soundtrack, but there's a vinyl version of the A Clockwork Orange soundtrack that is JUST her music.

The full version of Timesteps is great, over 13 minutes. The vinyl version of the soundtrack that is all Walter, all the time, is called "Walter Carlos' Clockwork Orange." At least my copy is...maybe it hasn't been updated since the name change.

It's also got a lot of the classical pieces performed and arranged by Carlos, even the ones that were orchestral on the 'official' soundtrack.

shookout (shookout), Monday, 19 April 2004 23:46 (nineteen years ago) link

shit chris our next album should be "the international telepaths hits played on moog". what a fantastic idea! now all we need are some hits and a moog!

there's some moog on the new tuggers LP. i like moogs, you can get them to make r2d2 noises

Xiffy Pup (Eric H.), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Two vaginas, actually - twice each, alternating. And now I'm listening to Digital Moonscapes, which seems to have a horrible reputation as an inconsequential, "thin-sounding" misstep, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

In response to the Q from three years ago, I think the score to Tron is pretty good, maybe a little schmaltzy at times (for a synth score) but has some very cool moments. I always liked this:

In 1998, Carlos sued the songwriter/artist Momus for $22 million[21] for his satirical song "Walter Carlos" (which appeared on the album The Little Red Songbook, released that year), which suggested that if Wendy could go back in time she could marry Walter. The case was settled out of court, with Momus agreeing to remove the song from subsequent editions of the CD and owing $30,000 in legal fees.[22]

Smartest Cheerleader: "Okay, it's more like a 'Red Shoe Diaries' written by Vonnegut. Take 'Walter Carlos,' for example. That's a song about a guy who has a sex change. You speculate about his female form travelling back in time to marry his older male form."

Dumbest Cheerleader: "Eww, gross."

Momus: "Walter Carlos is a real person. Er, I mean, Wendy Carlos. She's suing me over that song."

Dumbest Cheerleader: "Punk rock."

the full 13:48 version of time steps is essential - of course Wendy puts it on the score of clockwork orange which is harder to come by than the soundtrack. Hit me up if you're interested to hear it

80 years old today! I listen to a podcast called "The Soundtrack Show," which did a really, really good two-part episode last year on her scrore for TRON. For anyone interested: https://www.soundtrackpodcast.com/podcasts/tron-the-music-part-i.htm

For years, the soundtrack was unavailable on CD, originally due to a dispute between Carlos and CBS Records.[citation needed] Carlos later discovered that the original master tapes had deteriorated to the point where attempting to play them could destroy both the tapes and the playback machine. Carlos used a technique called tape baking (in which the tapes were literally baked in an oven to harden the glue holding the magnetic tape together) to repair the tapes so she could transfer them to digital masters.

Hate this thread title.

Anyway, her music for The Shining is awesome, it's a scandal it's never been collected on a single release, as it is it's spread over two volumes of Rediscovering Lost Scores - which are, of course, impossible to find.
