i don't really feel like the Jive album sanded off the edges of that aesthetic much at all, give or take a few of the more established producers' contributions

some dude, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:44 (five years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I agree. When I first heard the Jive album, I was actually surprised by how low-budget it sounded at times, especially the Fisticuffs productions. Because it came out so quietly at the time (this was before "Sure Thing" had any legs) I was wondering if Jive had cut corners and were just trying to bury the album. It definitely took a few listens for some of the more muffled production to make sense.

Evan R, Monday, 5 March 2012 16:52 (five years ago) Permalink

I kind of think of that hazy, reverbed vibe as the album's distinguishing characteristic. Gives it a very warm, intimate feel. Although a lot of that is down to Miguel himself, too.

like Strawberry Amazing but always hear a little Lenny Kravitz :/

i don't think anything on the EP touches "adorn" but that's the single of the year so far, so no biggie

'adorn' is great but the single of the year so far is obv 'climax'

"Climax" hasn't really hit me yet. I'm an "Adorn" partisan.

My ex is friends w his little brother lol. Apparently he sings too tho not professionally afaik

I like miguel. Sure thing was never my thing but he has a great voice and feels like a genuine original

D-40, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 01:45 (five years ago) Permalink

I think EZsnappin nailed it on tumblr where he said "Adorn" sounds like early-80s Marvin. The greater trick though, is that he achieves that vibe without any air of tribute or homage.

"Adorn" makes me think of Prince fwiw

D-40, Wednesday, 7 March 2012 11:16 (five years ago) Permalink

it makes me think of Prince less than 80% of his material but he definitely wrote it in part because he couldn't write another song called "Adore"

I think I like "Arch n Point" even more than "Adorn"! This is sooooooooooo good... even on my shitty laptop speakers it just sounds fantastic

"Broads" is a tad wacky

Number None, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 09:19 (five years ago) Permalink

wow, "...all" might be better?

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (five years ago) Permalink

"arch n point" could def be a trey songz album track, but like 10x better

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:00 (five years ago) Permalink

man, "...all" is almost threatening to be organ house

this shit bangs

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:09 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah, i think "...all" might be my favorite from this one

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:21 (five years ago) Permalink

Didn't realize we had a Miguel thread! Although in retrospect, duh.

Vol. 2 > Vol. 1 I think, although Adorn >>>> all the other tracks from the project.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:54 (five years ago) Permalink

naw, i think (although my opinion on this might change) "gravity" > any of the tracks on vol 2 also

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:57 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah listened to volume 2 today and nothing stuck with me at all really, kinda disappointed

but then went back and listened to vol 1, all i want is you, and mischief, so all is good. i seriously slept on all i want is you for so long

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 19:59 (five years ago) Permalink

i kinda wonder how many people on this thread are still sleeping on all i want is you

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:00 (five years ago) Permalink

did you ever come around on the title track?

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:01 (five years ago) Permalink

I didn't know about Mischief, d/ling that now.

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:03 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah i came around on the title track, although the salaam remi stuff on the album is still generally my least favorite

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:06 (five years ago) Permalink

mischeif is not mindblowing or anything, miguel's voice is obviosly the main draw but the production's not great and the songwriting isn't nearly as strong as his recent work

recent thug (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:11 (five years ago) Permalink

oh word

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:17 (five years ago) Permalink

There are small, scattered moments on Mischief where everything clicks and its like, "oh right, I love this guy." I've gotten a ton of writing done to that mixtape over the last couple of years; it's good background music that still kind of jams

Evan R, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:26 (five years ago) Permalink

I just still can't believe that he did the hooks on that Blu & Exile album from back in 2007.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:54 (five years ago) Permalink

saying "gravity" is the best thing off these tapes is clinically insane

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 20:59 (five years ago) Permalink

you are underrating "gravity", which is amazing, but i don't think anyone said that

if you feeling frogbs, leap (The Reverend), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:21 (five years ago) Permalink

yeah i misread you

i'd still rate them as adorn > ...all > arch n point > gravity

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 28 March 2012 22:32 (five years ago) Permalink

the thick bassline + the harmonies on the "shoo-di-doo da-di-da da-di-da-dah" chorus >>>>>>

'broads' is cute enough, what's the big problem

haven't heard his very earliest stuff but at least on all i want is you there was a clear pharrell/nerd vibe going and 'broads' is just some more of that writ a little too large. can't pretend it's not there though

i'd even argue you can make a case for still being able to hear trace elements of it in the new good widescreen stuff too really, but then i guess your imagination would need to stretch to what a decent latter-era nerd song would sound like

in any case it's true what rev says about miguel's elision of "any air of tribute or homage" whoever he may happen to sound like - a very nice trick to have

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/miguel-on-politics-adelanto-new-album-war-and-leisure-w509919

For Miguel, participating in the October 20th press conference and concert (the #SchoolsNotPrisons concert at the Adelanto Stadium baseball field) is part of a personal, slowly evolving engagement with the political moment, inspired by such musical heroes as Prince, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. "They all cared. It's a human thing," says Miguel. "They all pushed the boundaries in their own way. They all challenged us to look at things a different way. I saw that from the artists I love, and I decided I want to do that. To be an artist is to deal with what's happening in your time."

His upcoming fourth album, War & Leisure, is still overwhelmingly upbeat and concerned with the personal and romantic, but it also contains "Now," a questioning socially conscious ballad in the spirit of Lauryn Hill and Sam Cooke. Accompanied by layers of guitar and heavenly, electronic sounds, Miguel sings:

"CEO of the free world now/Build your walls up high and wide ... /Should we teach our children hatred?/Chase the innocent and shoot them down? ... /Is that the look of freedom, now?/Is that the sound of freedom?"
Last November, at age 31, the Grammy-winning soul artist voted in his first presidential election. "Politics, I didn't have a personal interest," Miguel admits. "I didn't really care. What is my one vote? That was my attitude."

He liked President Obama, but didn't feel drawn to the political process until last year's rise of Sen. Bernie Sanders during the Democratic primaries. "Watching him made me interested," said Miguel. "It was also our peers, our conversations, and seeing people really get behind him who shared similar values." Even after Sanders lost the nomination, Miguel stayed engaged through the general election.

After voting, he spent election night with his fiancée at an arcade and played air hockey as the TVs slowly revealed the results, state by state. "The shit started rolling in," remembers Miguel, who tried to stay positive until the results were clear. "With the election going in a direction way unexpected, I couldn't take my eyes off it. I couldn't not pay attention now."

Thanks.

For part of the drive, he listens to the latest mixes of War & Leisure, due out December 1st, and finds more to tinker with.

I guess its done, now? That was October 20th.

"pineapple skies" and "told you so" have gotten me pretty excited for the album... could shape up to be better than wildheart for me :)

Yeah, this is so dope. Previewed on Snoop's youtube channel iirc

MikoMcha, Friday, 17 November 2017 16:35 (one week ago) Permalink

damn this is electrifying, maybe better than anything on Wildheart. I'd basically written him off after all his garbage singles this year; feels good to be reminded why I used to adore this guy

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:13 (one week ago) Permalink

Told You So and Pineapple Skies are both so awesome that I feel bad that I doubted him. I'm still waiting for Skywalker to click.

kitchen person, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:19 (one week ago) Permalink

Yeah I wouldn't hold me breath for that. I dunno if the tracklist has been released, but I'm still holding out hope Skywalker doesn't make the cut. Can't imagine how any album could work around that dog pile.

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:23 (one week ago) Permalink

"sky walker" is on it. also you're wrong

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 18:20 (one week ago) Permalink

"sky walker" is my least favorite among what's widely available so far but i can stomach it now, i accept it and don't feel it will be terribly out of place. honestly i'm just glad ~the marketplace~ is still allowing him to get hits even if they're not going to be the best work he's capable of.
