mark e, Friday, 9 January 2009 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Kraftwerk was a big influence on Radiohead, and are the more 'classic' band - although Radiohead are pretty classic - so most will probably say Kraftwerk. In the end I have to go with the band that I listen to a *lot* more and have a lot of great memories over the past 15 years associated with - Radiohead.

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Friday, 9 January 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago) link

In defense of Radiohead, except for one or two songs they never sang about being robots. MAYBE that could be interesting if it's the '40's and you're down with the modernism avant garde or something. Otherwise robots are our bitches, nobody cares what they have to say. But anyway I voted Kraftwerk.

Voted Radiohead because of "OK Computer". If I am trying to be "objective" and look for who has the biggest impact on music, it would be Kraftwerk though.

I am voting on who I would rather listen to. only music crits care about "influence" and "importance".

xpost and yeah, # of times listened is probably the best gauge available. anything else is just frontin' imo.

i dunno. for me i have a whole bunch of stuff on vinyl and/or CDs i haven't ripped to my computer at work, so i tend to just sort of listen to whatever recent stuff i have ripped more times than stuff i actually like a lot better.

They've sometimes got a childlike quality about them. Which you certainly could not say about Radiohead!

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

No Surprises, musically at least

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 14:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Radiohead is plenty childlike but more like the stuff of children's nightmares. thom yorke's doom and gloom (especially around kid a and amnesiac) always felt a bit like a ten-year-old confronting the idea of death for the first time.

Disco/Very (Roz), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

I never got around to knowing the lyrics of amnesiac songs - it is my favorite album of theirs

I would imagine this totally comes down to when and what you hear. My first Kraftwerk exposure was "Trans-Europe Express" in my mid-teens and I certainly got THAT right away, but I'm not sure I would have picked up on, say, "The Looking Glass" the same way.

The Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Of course, at that point I was already familiar with any number TEE-derived bass & electro beats.
