I don't think I've ever heard "diva cup" used in Finland (seriously, what does it have to do with divas?), everyone I know says "mooncup" or plain ol' "menstruation cup".
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:51 (twelve years ago) link
think diva cup is a brand
― Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:53 (twelve years ago) link
the branding being something like "you are embracing your powerful womanhood by menstruating into a cup"
― Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link
let's all agree: blood cup
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:54 (twelve years ago) link
Later, when asked about whether shouting "Rape that bitch!" at a match is acceptable behavior, Bakhtanians replied, "Look, man. What is unacceptable about that? There's nothing unacceptable about that. These are people, we're in America, man, this isn't North Korea. We can say what we want. People get emotional."
this is the part that just blew my mind. dude needs such a huge punch in the balls. you can have a tough, aggressive, rough-and-tumble gaming culture without insisting on the necessity of constant sexual and racial harassment.

gotta love the "free speech means i can be an abusive asshole" line of reasoning, it may be old but man its super effective at soothing the irritation of acknowledging that other people exist
― i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link
Oh, most certainly, karl. I was just making the point that even in a community that great, there are still some bizarre outliers. They're not the ones who are doing well, but there's still the perception from some idiots that saying noxious bullshit is OK in online gaming.
It's interesting that SC2 is also one of the few games where people communicate in a way that is later replayable. I think fps gamers, if they're communicating, tend to use voice communication, as do fighting game people. SC2 is mostly people typing at each other, and recorded game files are what most youtube commentators are using. If you're being a racist, homophobic dick, then everyone is going to see it and you're going to get called out.

free speech is great because it actually inoculates us against all criticism for anything we ever say! those founding fathers thought of everything! god bless america.

We each of us have the freedom to be a total prick and not get arrested for it! But you still wind up being a total prick, so, meh.

I don't think you can be interested in human rights OR be a pragmatist and think that funding contraception doesn't make sense. Because even if you don't think that sex is a basic human right that everyone should be able to enjoy, then you have to at least acknowledge that people will have sex, even if you think they shouldn't, and costs will be reduced in the system overall if we provide people with contraception.
I think Limbaugh would like to consider himself a pragmatist, but his huge sexism and hatred of poor people is getting in the way
― valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link
haha he's nowhere near a pragmatist

that brand of conservatism is like 25% pragmatist, 75% really mean Archie Bunker
I don't think there's any brand of conservatism that has higher than 1% pragmatism at this point
― iatee, Wednesday, 29 February 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link
true, that
― valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 29 February 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link
don't understand how anyone can listen to limbaugh and not quickly come to understand that the extreme social conservatives he represents have no ideology, not even a coherent point of view. limbaugh's entire political agenda = the undisguised hated of anyone he perceives as "different". hatred of women, hatred of nonwhites, hatred of liberals, hatred of the poor and weak, hatred of the educated, hatred as an end in itself.

disagree. i think the hardcore, ideologically-committed free enterprise/small government conservatives tend to be extremely pragmatic, perhaps especially in their cynical exploitation of easily-led social conservatives.
