Quite enjoying The Declining Winter's "Lost Tapes". Undecided whether the decision for it to be released as a cassette and as a collection of demos rather than a "proper" album is a bit like waving a little white flag or honest. The blurry (non) production suits it, though.

djh, Friday, 27 December 2013 21:04 (ten years ago) link

I'm hoping it'll eventually appear on TDW's bandcamp page, as has now happened for Fragment #5. A very new song "Season Without" is also up there now.

doug watson, Saturday, 28 December 2013 02:50 (ten years ago) link

Also, $12US to ship a cassette tape to Canada from the US? I'll shed no further tears for the death of physical media.

And... a digital version of Lost Songs is now available on bandcamp.

Album seemingly only available from Norman Records.

good album

akm, Tuesday, 12 August 2014 22:34 (nine years ago) link

Oh, have pre-ordered copies already shipped?

There was a positive review of the new album in Fluid Radio this week. The author managed to avoid any comparisons to Hood, which was refreshing. As much as I've used the Hood association to explore similar projects (e.g., both Sierpinski albums are en route to my mailbox as I write this), it's encouraging to see these new efforts judged on their own merits.

doug watson, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 13:14 (nine years ago) link

Cold House has been on my list for like 8 years and I still have yet to ever see a cd or download of it for sale

before you die you see the rink (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 18:39 (nine years ago) link

You can get it for six quid from Norman Records.

I think the Domino Records stock of Cold House got destroyed in that warehouse fire.

djh, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 18:48 (nine years ago) link

there was a vinyl repress of cold house a few years ago. but that album is not difficult to find.

the sierpinski albums were great. matt robson was a cool guy. wonder where he's at these days.

akm, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 19:48 (nine years ago) link

Akm, how've you heard this already?

Looking forward to it, their first album was great too.

Seeing this thread pop up again though, how I still miss Hood.

ambient yacht god (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 13 August 2014 20:22 (nine years ago) link

I've only heard the 4 streaming tracks, not the full thing.

akm, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 20:24 (nine years ago) link

So the Sierpinski albums have arrived and I'm siding with akm on their merits. These are excellent, especially Evening Water Project.

doug watson, Thursday, 14 August 2014 17:56 (nine years ago) link

New Memory Drawings is up on spotify. Nothing shocking on first listen, just very consistently good, like the last one.

akm, there's a new Matt Robson album at Norman Records.

Obviously, all this side project nonsense should be ignored for now ... It's "The Cycle of Days and Seasons" season.

djh, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:17 (nine years ago) link

Cheers for the reminder, djh. (Although the Bracken and Great Panoptique Winter discs are also both excellent.)

doug watson, Friday, 14 November 2014 23:42 (nine years ago) link

Yes, thanks djh, and you are right! Barely know records that are so suitable to crawl up in the darkness to, with the wind and rain battering outside. Embracing northern grimness and misery. Rustic Houses feels more late summer-ish, Cold House is for when it gets below zero imho.

I found myself staring out the window forlornly to Outside Closer yesterday. Still Rain Fell indeed.

I may play this next. Great reminder

Outside Closer followed my Cycle just now.

Best band ever.

Cold House is the only one I don't really get

I listened to Silent '88 recently and it was fucking fabulous

imago, Saturday, 15 November 2014 19:53 (nine years ago) link

Just you wait till December and spin Cold House, you'll get it dude. Silent 88 is indeed fabulous.

It is indeed, excellent .
If it was Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada, they'd all be lapping it up.
What's more, there's some real pop music a la Talk Talk swirling in and around. It's a festive cracker.

Yeah, the Seaman and The Tattered Sail album is excellent. And the 10 hour digital version is a particularly great deal for £6.

Bill Seaman's f(noir) is an equally wonderful ambient work, although obv more concise: http://eileanrec.bandcamp.com/album/f-noir

doug watson, Monday, 15 June 2015 01:28 (eight years ago) link

Who is the Seaman and The Tattered Sail?

Not that I really mind, 'Hood related' has been enough for me to part with six quid.

écorché (S-), Friday, 24 July 2015 04:55 (eight years ago) link

Bill Seaman and Craig Tattersall (who played on some of the mid-period Hood recordings.) Not particularly Hood-related soundwise but as ambient recordings, it's an exceptional release.

doug watson, Friday, 24 July 2015 12:57 (eight years ago) link

It certainly is! Thanks

^ Tatterall plays in "the classic Hood line-up".

Anyway, you all know about the new/old Hood 7", yes?
