I've always been pretty surprised by how many people actually email GG back given his track record up putting up email exchanges on the web without asking them.

I find Greenwald admirable and annoying in equal measure but he isn't the first smug, sanctimonious egotist to do invaluable political work. It comes with the territory.

Assuming all of the allegations in the article are true, Carlson and Coglianese fail to do one important thing. They do not rebut or even attempt to rebut any of the reporting that Media Matters has made regarding inaccurate or misleading comments in conservative media.

Alex Pareene lets it rip:

Here’s how dedicated Carlson is to producing quality journalism: He hired, as his executive editor, a former strategist for Berman and Co., the “communications firm” that specializes in the creation of shadowy front groups and biased “research” for their clients in major industries. A man whose job was to deceive journalists on behalf of corporations, as editor. He hired Ginni Thomas — the wife of Clarence Thomas, major Tea Party figure and complete weirdo — as a special correspondent, mere months after Thomas had explicitly lied to a Caller reporter.

Carlson is now engaged in giving the people — the idiotic, angry, paranoid people — what they want, which became incredibly apparent once the Caller began tackling the Trayvon Martin tragedy by launching a campaign to prove that Martin had been a thug. It was barrel-scraping racist garbage. Martin’s Twitter feed and social media presence were cherry-picked to make him seem scary because he engaged in adolescent macho posturing. It was convincing proof that Martin wasn’t as “innocent” as he seemed, if your definition of “innocence” is “not young, black and male.” Asinine race-related trolling is now a major Caller beat, naturally, because, again, it’s good for traffic. I don’t think Carlson is remotely as racist as he is sexist and homophobic, which just makes it even grosser that he’s willing to exploit conservative racism for fun and profit.

"Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago," he said. "Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I’m on television every weeknight live for an hour. If you want to know what I think, you can watch. Anyone who disagrees with my views is welcome to come on and explain why."

2. I like it less when we data-mine a person's past to blast them out of the marketplace of ideas. Were people actually outraged by Tucker's comments? Or vengefully gleeful to find them? https://t.co/p1ZxVoQ1VB

I can't find it now but will look again later, but I saw a clip on youtube arguing that Leftist guests going on Tucker's show to use his platform are themselves being used by Tucker as a gateway to reach younger viewers. Tucker's no dummy, will give him that, and he knows his 'economic populist' argument can hit a chord outside his target audience. I'm on the fence about this, the almost fawning reception he gets from the likes of Jimmy Dore (and Glenn Greenwald) is dispiriting. Kulinski will be critical of Tucker on his show, but did give me pause for thought still - if you use a master propagandists platform, is there a price to pay (Tucker obviously thinks so, he never battles or interrupts his leftists guests, they have all the time in the world)

Ultimately, I think the value of going on outweights the price, but Tucker is an insidious operator, hmm

Thread: obviously the NYT is not in the habit of doxxing the subject of its stories. So what’s going on here? Tucker was signaling to his followers to harass NYT reporters who are covering him, and any others reporters who might be thinking of doing so. https://t.co/vc4bUDJnf1

— Don Moynihan (@donmoyn) July 21, 2020

carlson told his viewers that an upcoming NYT story was going to reveal his address (which NYT denies - have they ever doxxed someone?), then his followers found the addresses of the reporter and photographer and doxxed him instead, while the right (including ken fucking cuccinelli) started blurring the the lines between fact, fiction, future, and present, vaguely telling their own followers that the NYT had plans to dox Carlson, or even that they had already done so.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson is fashioning something of a professional defense: Sure, he lies, but not the way those guys at CNN lie.

In a 2018 podcast appearance, he ripped into CNN “Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter. “He’s just such a pompous little guy. … I mean, he’s one of the falsest people I’ve ever seen on television. … He’s just so, like, self-righteous … but also lying at the same time. Like, I lie ’cause everyone does. But one thing I would never do, have never done in my whole life, is lie self-righteously,” said Carlson in a chat with Jamie Weinstein. Moments later, he reversed: “I don’t lie.”

Three years on, Carlson’s not even trying to correct the record. In a new interview on “The Rubin Report,” he fielded a question about CNN anchors who “just lie again and again.” Carlson came up with a memorable response: “Well, it’s — I guess, I would ask myself, like, I mean, I lie if I’m cornered or something. I lie. I really try not to. I try never to lie on TV. I just don’t — I don’t like lying. I certainly do it, you know, out of weakness or whatever, but to systematically lie like that, without asking yourself, why am I doing this?” (See video at 36:00.)

The highly rated Fox News host argued that CNNers lie to prop up the powerful people in American life. “You’re lying to defend Jeff Bezos? You’re treating Bill Gates like some sort of moral leader?”

The admission was bizarre in light of the context: Host Dave Rubin didn’t ask Carlson whether he lies, but Carlson came out with his confession nonetheless. Maybe he feels bad about it all?

Nor did Rubin follow up on Carlson’s newsworthy admission. The opportunity for just such a cross-examination may well arise in the future, however. The next time that Carlson decides to smear someone on air, that someone’s libel attorney will surely point out in a complaint that Carlson has freely admitted to lying. Fox News defended a previous suit stemming from Carlson’s show by arguing that he engages in “non-literal commentary.”
