The press is going to DEVOUR him

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 7 August 2008 10:34 (fifteen years ago) link

ahahahahahahaha.....oh come on! the JETS?

hope D'Brickashaw is up to the task...if Favre actually plays and does not re-retire.

this may be the two games all year where Miami DBs come up with interceptions

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Ohmigod LOLLLLLLLL it actually happened. Pats fans are gonna have the knives out and 9/14 and 11/13 just became the most can't-miss regular season games.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:03 (fifteen years ago) link

what, the Patriots will win 31-24 instead of 31-7?

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:05 (fifteen years ago) link

suddenly Kellen Clemens is a sad, sad man

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Browns vs Jets tonight in preseason action. The fate of the world hangs in the balance!

brownie, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:49 (fifteen years ago) link

x-post no, just because I can probably spend all my aggression towards the rest of the NFL in two simple games!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:54 (fifteen years ago) link

They're dropping Pennington as we type. I think he'll be lucky to get a backup job.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I've been listening to Mike and Mike this morning and Greenburg just called Farve, "John Wayne in shoulder pads." LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOl!!!

First thing, the Packers have really pwned Farve by sending him to the Jets. If he had gone to Tampa, there would be an outside chance of getting to the Superbowl, but there is no chance in the AFC East. Without Farve, the Football Outsiders project the Jets as winning 7.2 games. With Farve, they could improve to what, 9 or 10 games. It's maybe enough to get back into the playoffs, but getting to the Superbowl ...ain't happening. Still, he is an upgrade over Pennington.

Second thing, everyone's looking at this from a fan's perspective and not from a general manager's. Good GM's are always thinking five to ten years down the road. At age 38-39, Farve isn't in the picture anywhere in five years. Here are some stats that explain what the Green Bay management may be thinking:

http://www.advancednflstats.com/2008/07/brett-favre-is-overrated.html

And a reminder of what the last couple of playoff appearances have been like:

http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_2318_Cheesehead_reality_bites.html

I'm not saying that Farve doesn't belong in the Hall of fame. He most certainly does. Nor I'm I denying he had a good year last year. He most certainly did, but at age 38-39 the chance that he will be as good as he was in 2007 as very slight.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Good GMs may be thinking 5-10 years down the road, but shitty GMs who are gonna get fired if their team has a bad season need themselves some gunslinger.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:42 (fifteen years ago) link

And that's what Farve is now, a stopgap. Plus, the Jets are going to make a shitload of money from product sales. So it's a good move for them in the short term. They almost had to do something to get some attention away from the Giants.

leavethecapital, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:47 (fifteen years ago) link

The press is going to DEVOUR him

He's about the only player I can think of who wouldn't give a fuck, and would come out the other end undigested.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Whatshisface called me at 1.17 this morning to very drunkenly explain what a big deal this was. What happened again?

more like 48-3 as favre takes 21 points away from the jets and gives the pats d multiple scoring opportunities.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm more interested in why the v and the r in his last name are reversed in pronunciation.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I decided against cancelling my sub to Sunday Ticket this year, but now that I'll have F-A-R-V on the tube for 16 weeks w/out DirecTV's assistance, I might reconsider.

STAY HEALTHY BRETT

David R., Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Seriously if this ratass cock comes into Jersey and pulls up lame w/ some blue flu BS because Coles didn't smile during a post pattern or Mangina failed to add the Throw Into Triple Coverage set to the playbook...

God if only Favre & Shockey ended up on the same team.

David R., Thursday, 7 August 2008 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I wonder how soon it will be before someone tries to get the city of Green Bay to rename Brett Favre Pass.

peter king sucks up to reports on brett favre

omar little, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Chief Montana was actually very good.

Typical crap reporting by King on favre. His article in last weeks SI about the Farve saga is the definition of embarrassing.

Farves wife is just a total pain in the ass.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 7 August 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Pennington gave his heart and soul and rotator cuff to the Jets. He even took a pay cut once, if I remember correctly. Now he'll be forgotten. Very unjust.

Fuck farve

well, what's there to remember. Chad was a good guy, no doubt he was a team player.....

BUT HE HAD ONE GOOD FUCKING SEASON!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

I now have TWO teams I can pretend to root for in the AFC East!
Bills beacuse they're the fucking Bills and Jets because LOL FAVRE!!!
I don't know why it took me all day to think of this but I guess I was having too many chuckles at "how does retiree shot madden curse? he comes back and gets traded to the jets"

El Tomboto, Friday, 8 August 2008 07:54 (fifteen years ago) link

re: the chad

i think you could argue he had at least two pretty good seasons and two serviceable ones. i can think of many guys who came into the league w/ a higher profile who did not fare as well.

j.q higgins, Friday, 8 August 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

He was really good in what, 2002, probably the only year he was healthy.

leavethecapital, Friday, 8 August 2008 15:02 (fifteen years ago) link

Question: did Pennington ever have a good arm, or was he always a touch / short route type of QB?

As for Chad's offensive failings, I think some of the blame has to be shared w/ the Jets' system under Herman Edwards & Paul Hackett -- thanks to my diehard J-E-T-S fan friend, I saw way too many games where there were way too many 3rd-and-longs (between 6-8 yards) that ended w/ completions 2+ yards short of the down marker.

Won't argue with you there--the Jets had nothing to lose with him and got a hell of a lot more than they bargained for in 2002. but then again, it's not saying much--high profile QBs regularly fail, lest the fates of Cade McNown, Ryan Leaf, et al be remembered

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 23:16 (fifteen years ago) link

dude was never the same after all the surgeries, became more turnover prone.

but hey, he's a Jet, what could you expect....

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 8 August 2008 23:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Chad Pennington might be a good pickup for a team like the Vikings, even as insurance. Pennington is steady and if they can keep him off his back and put the weight on the running game, I think he would be fine. The guy understands the game. Pennington's career completion rate is 65.8, that is freakin' excellent and the guy is not a total interception hog. He just has gotten pounded playing for the Jets, but I could see it working in the right situation ala Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer. I think he would be perfect for the Vikings with that running game, especially if Jackson cannot get it done or is too mistake prone (ala Johnson replacing King for the Bucs). Minnesota should rap him up and he will be ready about week 7 if it isn't working with the young guy.

I think Pennington should steer clear of Carolina or the Bears, as those teams o-line are so bad, it is just stepping in front of a different gun. Minnesota or maybe some place like KC would be better.

btw dude he's already a dolphin it's confirmed, 2 years ~11 mil

cankles, Sunday, 10 August 2008 02:04 (fifteen years ago) link

i find it hard to believe carolina's line is anywhere near as bad as chicago's - gross, otah, wharton and kalil are all young players with plenty of upside. tho they are built for power running, not pass pro.

More from the you-can't-make-this-up file:
"It was very interesting to hear him say, 'Let's have a lot of fun.' A guy who's been in the league that long, first thing that came out of his mouth was 'Let's have a lot of fun.'"
