voted meddle, though i was strongly temped by both obscured by clouds and saucerful of secrets. ummagumma and atom heart mother art great, too. have never liked animals. too bitter, i guess, though it's a thousand times better than the final cut on that score.

I don't even like "One Of These Days" that much but "Echoes" and "A Pillow of Winds" are fantastic. I probably need to listen to Obscured by Clouds more.

Tim F, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:15 (twelve years ago) link

"Fearless" is the best, too.

Euler, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago) link

Yes that too.

Tim F, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago) link

I had to double check to make sure it was so -- I'm surprised that nobody claimed Floyd for a ballot poll.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 20 February 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

Meddle by a loooong stretch and then Ummagumma/Obscured by Clouds close second.

Janet Snakehole (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 20 February 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago) link

Meddle has been my answer for decades, but after hearing these latest remasters I'd say Animals finally edges it. Such an amazingly mean record, and it finally has some snarl.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

So, let's poll the albums, without four: Piper, Moon, Wish and Wall.

None of those excluding piper are real favorites amongst ilxors. Meedle and Animals are considered better over here than those three as evidenced by past polls.

Moka, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

I've only heard half of these but Animals is my favourite Floyd album after DSOTM - I've always found the angry, harder stuff on The Wall kind of corny but it totally works on Animals.

Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 20 February 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

The Discovery version of Saucerful Of Secrets finally makes Corporal Clegg sound palatable. Had really hated it on previous versions of the cd. Now the music seems as prominent as the vocal or something, and it sounds all the better for it.

Ummagumma has a great live disc and a studio one I don't listen to. The live disc is pretty archetypal spacerock and I think it's a model a lot of other bands used. Other live stuff up to about 72 is pretty great too.

I'm not as familiar with the other stuff up to Dark Side as I should be. I've had the discs for the last few years, in the previous mastered version. Haven't really listened to things past that. Though have heard Shine On You Crazy Diamond, which I guess is inevitable. That track's pretty good but has obviously had the lp excluded here.
Think I need to listen through those early 70s lps a bit more.
but toss up between Saucerful and Ummagumma (live)

I'll claim it if no one else has...

Floyd are more an albums band than tracks band I think. Maybe that's why there wasn't people interested in leading a ballot poll?

I'd run it as a tracks poll anyway... At least "Comfortably Numb" and "High Hopes" will have a fighting chance.

Well, that's the thing..

The latest 'best of' is blocked-booked by Darkside, OhWall and ShineOn, and as they are sooo long, nothing else gets a look, really

Mark G, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 06:56 (twelve years ago) link

i've always found Animals to be a very slight album. some cloying vocals from Waters damn near ruin Pigs and Sheep for me, while the opening and closing tracks are little more than tepid bookends. that leaves Dogs, which while great in parts, has that overwrought mid-section.

this poll belongs to Meddle for mine, an appealingly serene and sleepy record, despite jolt-ish numbers like One of These Days and Seamus. Saucerful is a reasonably close second.

charlie h, Tuesday, 21 February 2012 07:10 (twelve years ago) link

!!!

I find Waters's vocals on Pigs anything BUT cloying. If anything I find them a much more honest demonstration of his anger than he plays at on The Wall, as much as I love that album.

A Full Torgo Apparition (Phil D.), Tuesday, 21 February 2012 12:12 (twelve years ago) link

"Echoes" kinda bores me these days, it's so obviously just a nice little song painfully stretched out to fit one side of an album. Also I always thought the line "Strangers passing in the street/ By chance two separate glances meet" was "Strangers passing in the street/ By chance two separate classes meet". Really tempted to vote "Atom Heart Mother" but I hate that Waters whingefest "If".

It seems the 'period' of PF I like best is the one where they all try really hard at being a rock band and writing songs and filling the space left by the bloke that used to do all that.

and not the "Rog takes over" bit.

Which would seem to suggest I'd like the last 2 PF albums. Would I?

Mark G, Monday, 27 February 2012 10:59 (twelve years ago) link

Animals for me. I love how damn paranoid 'Dogs' sounds when it fades in, and the way each vocal line crossfades into that synth tone during 'Sheep' (not to mention the outro on that track, which is one of THE moments of the album when it kicks in).

Turrican, Monday, 27 February 2012 11:51 (twelve years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I love 'Animals' so much I can't even tell you. For one thing, I love the singing, which is not the first thing that usually comes to mind when I think of Pink Floyd. I love how 'stone' echoes eternally. I love the conceit; it's one of the very few concept albums where the idea doesn't intrude on the mysterious beauty of the music. I love the melodies, they are indelible. I love the lyrics, especially 'Dogs.' Whenever I hear that song I think, oh God, my poor father. I LOVE the riff at the end of 'Sheep.' I love every fucking thing about this album, including the tremendous album cover.

I just bought the remaster of Animals after not having heard it for years. I always loved the record's vibe, but in retrospect that impression is mostly produced by the majesty of "Dogs." Therefore I gotta vote Meddle.

Sad that More didn't get a vote, but it would be 4th or 5th at best if I ranked them.

Wow, high turnout!

I can get behind this, agreed about the cover, it's the only Floyd album I have on vinyl and the gatefold sleeve looks so great.

This poll inspired me to give The Final Cut a go - absolutely hated it (too much shouty/pained Roger) but would be interested in hearing a fan's view. Also listened to the 'More' soundtrack, which was ok.

always thought Ummagumma had a lot of supporters here?

i also feel bad for More. Cymbaline is in my PF top 5.

The two who voted for Momentary Lapse, I'd like to see you in my office after work.

Have we ever polled Roger Waters solo albums?

To poll Roger Waters's solo albums?
Now that'll be a momentary relapse into pain:)
