I wonder what you guys would be saying had you been around for La Bouche, The Real McCoy and Captain Hollywood Project

iirc my thoughts on all this stuff at the time was "when are they playing Coolio again?"
I fux w/ "Sweet Dreams" and "Another Night" (tho I always thought this sounded like a Coke jingle) and maaaaaaaaaaayyyybe "Be My Lover" tho

i can't figure out if la bouche and the real mccoy are supposed to really be a defense of this (or anything)
― fauxmarc, Thursday, 16 February 2012 18:18 (seven years ago) Permalink
it's more, people are having this hysterical overreaction to this dude as if he's some brand new circle of awful hell rather than someone who is pretty clearly operating in a paradigm that's been sending hits to the charts for 20 years
it's basically "look, we survived Robert Miles, we will survive this too, just relax"

"look, we survived Robert Miles, we will survive this too, just relax"
I immediately vote for this as the replacement slogan for "Keep Calm and Carry On"

fuck you Dan, "Children" is a classic *takes ball and goes home*
― The Reverend, Thursday, 16 February 2012 19:14 (seven years ago) Permalink
lol
I mean, in the interest of full disclosure I never understood why everyone despised "Children" either but Miles such a good stand-in for "commercially successful dance dude that dance people seem to hate with terrifying and unhealthy fervor"

Dan obviously doesn't remember the mass group suicides of the 90s.

i am a big fan of "another night" to be honest
― teledyldonix, Friday, 17 February 2012 06:13 (seven years ago) Permalink
"Another Night" is brilliant. That bit near the end with the crazy little synth arpeggio behind Olaf's rap is one of the best all time house party moments.
Pretty much all of my issues with Harris are tied up with his voice and persona, which were heavily prevalent on "I Like The Girls" and "Born In The 80s"; those records really were some brand new circle of awful hell. He was a dickhead in interviews and the like at that time as well.
Fear and loathing seem somewhat overdone if he's just producing chintzy circus organ dance-pop now, but if he opens his mouth on the new record then all bets are off.

lol @ this being a carbon copy of "We Found Love" with Ne-Yo subbing in for Rihannahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpMbjW43vGY

I just looked at his wikipedia page... that "Sweet Nothing" song is getting some radio play in the US and aside from the horrible Rihanna song it's his highest charting single. But in the UK his last six songs have gone 2-2-2-2-1-6 and both albums #1. Is he totally unavoidable on UK radio/in clubs etc?
― skip, Thursday, 21 March 2013 17:47 (five years ago) Permalink
i don't know if actual djs in actual clubs actually play him but yeah he's all over the radio, drinking from the bottle being the current irritant
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 21 March 2013 19:03 (five years ago) Permalink
I can't imagine any DJ with any kind of rep ever playing Calvin Harris, but he's probably ubiquitous in high street nightclubs (ie most of the clubs in the UK).

"thinking about you" is such a good song
― le goon (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 8 March 2014 20:06 (four years ago) Permalink
yeah it's much better than his other recent stuff, i was actually surprised it was him. naturally it is not getting nearly as much american radio play as his other songs did.

"Summer" is ok but seems like a rewrite of "Feel So Close" (which I kind of liked *ducks*)
― Vinnie, Monday, 5 May 2014 13:14 (four years ago) Permalink
the synth line of the chorus to summer is beyond parody, like something from page 2 of "john thompson's elementary guide to the piano"

not into "summer" at all
