"tommy stinson," what a dumb name
― popcorn (get bent), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:12 (twelve years ago) link
I'd think Tommy Stinson at this point might have been in GNR as long as some of the others. It still weirds me out that he has been in GNR for like 10 years now. I'd love to have a time machine to go back to like '87 and bet him that he would end up in that band.
― earlnash, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:16 (twelve years ago) link
At least Tommy end in "eee."
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:28 (twelve years ago) link
I think it's hilarious that anyone can be considered to be "in" a band that doesn't really record/release music or play shows
― max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:29 (twelve years ago) link
I mean Tommy's being "in" GnR for 10 years has probably resulted in what, maybe a couple hundred hours of actual work?
― max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link
It's why Buckethead was the natural successor.
― ‘Neuroscience’ and ‘near death’ pepper (Eazy), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link
Actually, Tommy's been in GN'R closer to 15 years at this point. For serious.

I never finished Adler's autobiography. Is there anything worth reading about after 1997?

xpost I may be saying them Sunday night, actually.
What happened to Duff's book? That seems the most promising of the lot.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:43 (twelve years ago) link
Duff's book is good. But not really about Guns, though. At least not after the first 150 pages or so. And it's low on stories ala "the Dirt". But most of those are known by now anyway. The boook is more of a "how I learnt to live again"-type of story. But he's a likeable guy, Mr. McKagan, and it's pretty well written. Lots about his Seattle-roots too..
― Mule, Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:55 (twelve years ago) link
I read Duff's book also. Its a decent read, but I wish he had been a bit less diplomatic about everything. Like he barely mentions anything about the Illusions sessions. I wanted to hear how a dude from the Seattle punk scene explains how he ends up playing stuff like "November Rain" but I guess at the same time it seems like he was barely functioning from 1989 to 1993.
― smash williams, Thursday, 16 February 2012 17:40 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I guess he only touches upon that. Illusions happened because Izzy opted out and nobody besides Axl really cared, or were able to contribute anything at all, really.. But he's a tad too diplomatic, I agree. It might have something to do with the fact that the different relationships are finally getting better (story with Axl in London) and that he's too nice of a guy..?
― Mule, Thursday, 16 February 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link
Between Duff's, Slash's, and Steven's books, you get a pretty good triangulation of what went on, but yeah, not really enough on the Illusions stuff. I think that in addition to being a nice guy, Duff is also a total dork.
― getting good with gulags (beachville), Thursday, 16 February 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link
i think Slash's book had ample Illusions/post-Illusions era material

Doing anything other than walking on eggshells with Axl generally results in immediate shutdown of all communication/a torrent of verbal threats/onstage disses/bad-mouthing in the media/the occasional millon-dollar lawsuit, so yeah, there might be something to that idea.
Duff strikes me as the wisest and most personable of the original quintet, and with the HOF induction coming up, he has a vested interest in not getting on Axl's bad side. When Axl is pissed, the motherfucker doesn't burn bridges, he nukes them.

somedude, I was referring to Duff's book specifically, but really I don't think any of them go into the recording sessions for Illusions the way they did for Appetite.
― getting good with gulags (beachville), Thursday, 16 February 2012 18:43 (twelve years ago) link
I have a feeling going into the recording sessions for Illusions is not extricable from stepping on Axl's toes.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 February 2012 19:52 (twelve years ago) link
I hope the group's inducted early with Axl hiding backstage, and then an hour and a half later, Axl just walks out on stage - oblivious to whatever's happening on it - and does that slow building scream at the beginning of "Jungle"

preferably right in the middle of the Beastie Boys induction
Be funnier if Axl holds up the entire ceremony for two hours.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link
That possibility seems a lot more boring to me than him ASSUMING they waited

It's sad that the most irreverent thing to ever happen at a Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame induction came courtesy of Madonna

I'm guessing the Nirvana two will be teary and proud, and it looks like g'n'r will treat this like a class reunion. I hope instead of listing the infinite number of rappers that belonged in the hallowed hall before them, the beasties just lip-sync to "Fight For Your Right" and smash the mics a la American Bandstand.

Gettin' a little ahead of ourselves are we? These guys aren't in just yet. I mean, yes, obvious shoe-in, but in a few more years.

― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link
There's no way that'll happen. Nirvana will be eligible for 2014 class, iirc. Foo's will be 2020. Those old Rolling Stone types that vote for this love Nirvana.

Yeah, I know that, I just was naming people who in some ideal world could at least provide some cartoon irreverence for the night.
― da croupier, Thursday, 16 February 2012 20:36 (twelve years ago) link
i mean it'd be great if if courtney, krist and dave would go through "smells" and "heart shaped box" after screaming "HEY AXL, WHERE'S AXL?" from the podium, but I'm guessing Dave's spent too much time with the Macca for that to happen now, and Krist will probably be on his best behavior for Kurt's memory. Courtney remains an x factor.

Gah, why are people even pretending that this reunion will be anything more than the literal "all the original members of the band in the same room" sort? There is no way Axl (who just turned 50, btw!) gives a shit about the other guys. I just saw GNR a week ago - it was exhausting/robotic - and Axl seems pretty cozy with his current set-up, which seemed designed/built to work around his exact eccentric specifications. Like them letting him leave the stage every minute, or letting his lame guitarists cover the Henry Mancini and John Barry. He and Tommy seem like best buds.
