>just booked tickets for my first ever US trip to NY in April. Fly home on the 9th April.

change your flight dates or hate yourself for the rest of your life

I'm a fan of some of the 90's 'Mix' versions of CW tracks, the 1998 digital version of 'Numbers' is exactly how a new Kraftwerk record should have sounded at that time. Not all of the updates worked, but I enjoyed the way they were reinterpreting the catalog. For the 2004 tour they seemed to regress some of the arrangements to be more faithful to the original versions. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it now that they're doing entire albums.

Might just have to make some of these, but I'm going to miss the first two nights which are the ones I want to see most. Unless word leaks that the 'additional composition' for the first night is a 30 minute long version of 'Elektrisches Roulette' in which case all bets are off

Awesome. And also rubbish, for I can't attend. But awesome.

the 'Trans-Europe' night may actually be the most magical from the NYC perspective - one of the things i remember finding really beautiful about the last time i saw kraftwerk in NYC was how diverse the crowd was up front - black, white, 50 yrs old, 18 yrs old, hip-hop, techno - and how mental the crowd went during 'Trans-Europe Express'

i really wish i'd gotten to see Kraftwerk in Detroit

geeta, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

so exciting - but I'm assuming this show will be toured to some extent

totally... noticed the same thing when I saw them, people from a really wide range of backgrounds/subculture responding to this universal music from slightly different angles. so great.

omg would love to see the whole of Radio-Activity live. pretty lol how they've retconned Techno Pop as having come out after all.

zappi, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 21:55 (twelve years ago) link

Omg only $25??? Which one(s) should I get? Can anyone tell me how impossible it'll be to get tickets to this thing?

Just how big is the "Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium"?

Mayan Calendar Deren (doo dah), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago) link

it's a big rectangular space with extremely high ceilings, not massive. what i'm sort of concerned about is the sound, but i'm sure kraftwerk is making them upgrade. it's on the 2nd floor of MoMA. where marina abramovic did her daily staring performances, if you remember that.

I hope it's not one of those things where tickets only go to the people who are lucky enough to refresh the sale page and click everything as quickly as possible at noon

Welcome to Earth. Have you been here long?

My point was less "shows that sell out in 30 minutes" and more "shows that sell out instantaneously" (e.g. LCD at MSG)

And yeah I am p hellbent on seeing Computer World and/or Techno Pop or maybe Autobahn, gah! Decisions.

i don't get this: There is a two-ticket limit per person for the entire series.

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

huge demand, low supply, wanting everyone to see at least something?

valleys of your mind (mh), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

yes, sure i get that. it's just unclear... can i order 2 tickets for 2 different nights?

nerve_pylon, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Just got an email from MOMA - no tickets held back for members; you gotta get in there at 12 on Tuesday like everybody else.

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 15 February 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks Geeta, seems like an odd place acoustically? Hm.
Stevie, I went to the Showclix site and it does look like you can purchase two tickets only. Huh. "There is a two ticket per person limit for the entire series. Once you have purchased two tickets, you will be unable to purchase tickets for any other Kraftwerk performance."

That is kind of a drag. Oh well. Fingers crossed we can get something. At the very least, we will come for the exhibition at PS1...

Oh, and the tickets go on sale on Wednesday, Feb 22, at 12:00 PM EST.

found this short review i wrote of the last time kraftwerk played NYC, almost exactly seven years ago

http://www.villagevoice.com/2005-05-31/music/be-stiff/

geeta, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:33 (twelve years ago) link

yes, definitely an odd space acoustically! the trend towards big museums underwriting gigs by interesting bands is something i support, but when they stick them in a big open-air atrium or something like that i start to wonder. museums weren't designed for great sound

hammerstein ballroom was definitely a great venue to see kraftwerk--kind of like the warfield in SF

geeta, Wednesday, 15 February 2012 23:41 (twelve years ago) link

I was there at Hammerstein! :D And in DC two nights previously! Uh oh, I am outed as a fan-girl!

there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a kraftwerk fangirl: i have been one since age 13

here's an essay i wrote some years ago, where i talk about being a teenage kraftwerk fan (and other stuff)

yea, I was at that hammerstein show too. everyone cheering during the 'chernobyl, hiroshima, etc.' into to 'radioactivity' was o_O

seriously great show tho. one of the best I've seen.

original bgm, Thursday, 16 February 2012 05:30 (twelve years ago) link

I saw them at the Manchester Velodrome a couple of years back, one of the best gigs I've ever seen; I still get chills just thinking about the opening, "The Man Machine", with that arpeggio and then thunderous bass and the crowd going *completely fucking nuts* as they were revealed. That run of shows at MOMA looks epic.

^^That's where the real-life cyclists came on the Velodrome track during "Tour de France", right? Saw it on youtube, amazing!
Saw them in '04, so so great. Would love to be able to see the 3d show. A friend told me he read tweets suggesting they'd do a similar run at Tate Modern/London. Does anyone know more?

They were pretty awesome when I saw them a few years back, too. Great light show, great sound. Want to say I saw Massive Attack the same year at the same venue, and the shows were oddly analogous in terms of quality and surprise entertainment value.

New song up on youtube under the klingklang account. Sounds an awful lot like the last album. Maybe there will be another night at nyc, to debut the new album? *jozz in my pants*

Lots of people are requesting it. The source of the rumours seems to be this tweet by these guys, who I've never heard of.

It's some serious getting-hopes-up stuff though.

think I'm gonna take a shot at Man-Machine and maybe Computer World (on the theory that Trans-Europe Express will be the most popular ticket)

dmr, Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

^^^man machine is their best anyway.

original bgm, Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:38 (twelve years ago) link

but i'll be out of town for that one :-/

Really re: TEE being most popular? It seems like it'd be CW and Man Machine by a long shot, followed by TEE and Autobahn, and then Radioactivity, Techno Pop, The Mix, and TDF being way behind

I have one thing to say: "Roxanne Shanté" (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:48 (twelve years ago) link

TEE is the first one I bought bc of its heavy status w critics. but I'm not sure if that proves much of anything.

holding out for ralf & florian night btw.

original bgm, Thursday, 16 February 2012 15:56 (twelve years ago) link

I'd see 3-way tie between CW, M-M and TEE, then the rest. I would kill to attend ANY of these shows btw

Guy from KW mailing list. There were noises about the Tate back at the time of the Munich Lenbachhaus Kunstbau show/concert at Alten Kongresshalle.

yeah I agree

Really re: TEE being most popular?

I have no idea, just thinking that's their most widely known track because of "Planet Rock" (see post above about black, white, young, old, hip-hop, techno)

dmr, Thursday, 16 February 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

i really want to get man-machine but think it will be the most popular/quickest to sell out. it's on my birthday!!! i think techno pop will be my second choice.

bene_gesserit, Thursday, 16 February 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

also i dearly wish they were doing ralf und florian, because it's my favorite.

bene_gesserit, Thursday, 16 February 2012 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

man, i'm so jealous of the techno pop lovers. try as i might i just can't get into it as heavily as the others
