I like Seven the Spells, just rediscovered it, actually. Reminds me a little of some ex local guys, Warhammer 48k. oh wow, the first (Vern Rumsey engineered) Warhammer album is on spotify, that's great!
Feel like Circle deserve a mention for recent forward thinking psych. My personal favorite is Prospekt but they release monumental albums at a frightening pace and I'm not super familiar with their stuff from the last five or so years. Luckily, there's a great thread on here detailing all of that stuff.

It is Seven THAT Spells, btw, just a typo.
The Warhammer guys (they were practically still kids) were all obsessed with Unwound. They sent a tape to Vern and he dug it. They packed everything in to a minivan and drove from the middle of Missouri to Olympia WA and spent a week or so recording.

I know how it is when it seems like no one is listening to recommendations. I've checked out the Seven That Spells, Sungod and Dark Sun and have been enjoying them all, mostly while beavering away at work on a big project.
I really thought people would go nuts for Venomous Maximus along the lines of Ghost, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Christian Mistress, but I just hear crickets ;) I think more will get on board when their full length comes out.
Looks like I better pull the trigger on the Devil's Blood/In Solitude tickets for the Friday the 13th show in April at Bottom Lounge. Anyone planning to go? La Lechera?
I also just finished a piece on how many of my favorite recent metal/doom/sludge/occult bands are lead by women: Metal Sirens

Hmmm...you think it'll sell out already? I was excited because AMT is going to be at the EB (again) but it's on a Monday :-/
Just out of curiosity, FnB, do you know anyone who got that weird "gold pass" thing (or whatever they were calling it) at the EB? I always think something like that is a terrible idea, but then I look at how many shows I would/could go to and it starts to sound better, esp over the summer.

Oh no, I figure everyone who's interested will eventually hear 'em!
xp Ha, I make it to Empty Bottle maybe once a year, so not my bag. I don't like how their shows are so late on weeknights, and the only way home is an expensive cab ride. Ultra Lounge is really starting to put together some good shows. Coming up are Rollo Tomasi, Truckfighters, Hull/East Of The Wall/Royal Thunder/Black Tusk (all in one night!), Across Tundras, and Negura Bunget. Same place does booking there as Reggies (where I'm planning to see Turisas).

posted about this in the Bandcamp page, but I dig these guys. Two guys--bass & drums--saw them play live last night. The bass player started off their first "song" by holding a power drill up to his pickups and stabbing his bass with a knife, followed by sampling the speech from Network. Wildly hallucinatory mix of drone metal, samples, and a highly controlled aura of dread (even if a lot of the stuff on their page is more conventional stoner-metal)

Venomous Maximus is cool though it lacks the beguiling pop sense that made Ghost/Uncle Acid seem special. They seem to be mine a more trad-stoner vein like Fu Manchu or Orange Goblin. It's a rocking record though.
Haven't listened to all of the Deepspacepilots album but that one was good too; predictably I tend to like the album's prettier, more melodic moments, ie "Light of the Sun" & "Black Emanuelle". I really like "Black Emanuelle"

Greenleaf has had an evolving cast the past decade. Those disappointed when Dozer went on indefinite hiatus when vocalist Fredrik Norden went back to school will be pleased that Greenleaf is basically Dozer with Truckfighters' Oskar Cedermalm on vocals. I thought Nest of Vipers didn't come out 'til June on Small Stone, but you can stream it now until Monday. Available on iTunes. http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2012/03/05/greenleafstream/
Speaking of Truckfighters, they killed it Monday night. Good thing, as last year they did not impress my friends at Reggies. I knew it was just technical difficulties. Their amp literally ignited on fire, billowing smoke. They borrowed another band's amp and broke that too. Third time worked, but did not sound great. The vocals particularly were improperly amplified/mixed. Last night at Ultra Lounge there were no such problems. The sound was perfect and their performance was epic. They reminded me slightly of Nirvana on their Bleach tour if you switch uptight/intense Kurt to bass (Ozo), and if Keith Moon and Animal merged and took up guitar (the manic, muppety Dengo). With the satisfying heavy fuzz and the variety of amazing tones Dengo squeezed out, I'd rank this show higher. They were in Memphis last night, and Nola tonight. I picked up a CD of first album Gravity X and their mockumentary DVD.

My subwoofer is shaking my cube this morning with this album. Doesn't come out 'til Apr 2 but you can stream it above. UK Stoner/Doom/Sludge. If you like Electric Wizard and Sleep (who they're touring with), check 'em out!
Reviews: http://www.doommantia.com/2012/03/conan-monnos.html"Conan...have always been great but this album is the absolute peak of perfection. I can say it right now, this album is my early pick for the album of 2012. Recorded at Foel Studios by Chris Fielding who has worked with Electric Wizard, Moss and Serpent Venom to name just a few has made a masterpiece out of this 6 track, almost 40 minute onslaught of monster-like doom and sludge-metal."
http://www.thesleepingshaman.com/reviews/album-reviews/c/conan-monnos-cd-lp-dd-2012/"Monnos is amazingly accomplished, singular in its apocalyptic vision and densely layered. And by dense I don’t just mean the dropped-F tuning that the guys reportedly use. Not only are the songs heavy (and I’m talking heavy), they’re also strangely otherworldly. When Jon Davis’ lets out his signature siren-call it sounds like a message that has filtered through time, telling us of some long-forgotten massacre from the Dark Ages and the music acts as a grim backdrop to it all. As pompous as that sounds, these aren’t your everyday doom songs – this is a timeless doom record and it’s heavier than just about anything you’ve ever heard."

Many of you have probably heard that Southern Lord is reissuing a deluxe version of Sleep's Dopesmoker.
For the 2012 reissue, there are some very notable changes. The original studio tapes have been remastered presenting the album as the band had originally intended. The audio is clearer, louder, and at last brings a true representation of SLEEP's hour-plus Weedian chronicle. Exclusive to this Southern Lord edition is brand new artwork by long time SLEEP artist Arik Roper, to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Additionally, this reborn version of Dopesmoker boasts an unreleased live recording of one of the band's best all-time performances: "Holy Mountain" from San Francisco's I-Beam in 1994.
It's unclear to me, however, if they're comparing it to the Tee Pee version or the Jerusalem version.

I don't need another version of Dopesmoker. The cult of Sleep is one of the most inexplicable aspects of modern metal culture to me. Right up there with the cult of Om. The best thing Matt Pike ever did was leave Sleep and form High On Fire.

Wizard Smoke is Atlanta's premiere stoner metal band, or at the very least the favorite among people that go to all the garage rock/punk shows in town, or buy w33d from band members. They're pretty great, the first time I saw them was at an outdoor show on May 21, 2011, the day Jesus was supposed to come back. As they played I saw a glowing light rise up from behind them in the distance, hover in the sky, and then dart off. It was a UFO, and I turned to one of my friends and she looked at me like "I know! WTF?"

To Whom It May Concern:I recently discovered the manuscript while rambling in the woods with my dog. It was a few weeks shy of the vernal equinox, and the fine ends of the trees had just begun to show green. My hound had left me alone on the trail to go nose about the scrub—and possibly ferret out something living to eat—when suddenly I heard him calling. I found him pawing furiously at the ground in front of a weird tree with a huge trunk and massive branches sprouting low. Its bark was hard as granite and almost blue in color. My dog ceased his digging and looked at me, seemingly imploring me to dig further. I loosened the soil with my knife and continued the excavation until I struck something hard: it was a bound volume bearing the engraving “Tome of the Future Ancients by Ice Dragon." Inside, the leaves were filled with inscrutable symbols, ritualistic diagrams, and illustrations of strange flora and fauna. Even the must that invaded my nose as I turned the pages was alien. What had I found?Once home, I began to research and quickly discovered that there was a musical entity named Ice Dragon who worked in a basement not far from where the book had been. I contacted them to see if they had hidden it as some sort of promotional stunt. When I mentioned the engraving on the front, there was a pregnant pause on their end of the line. They assured me they had no knowledge of the book. However, what they revealed next gave me pause:They had just completed their third album, and it was titled Tome of the Future Ancients. It was to be released on the day of the equinox. Sure enough, this turned out to be true.By now, I was almost certain they were simply in the business of creating hype. There was no doubt they were responsible for the creation and burying of the book. Or so I was convinced, until carbon dating proved ineffective, and my academic peers who specialize in cryptography responded to my inquiries with blank looks. Then, quite simply, the book vanished. One day it was in my study, and the next it was gone. Perhaps one of my colleagues grew jealous of my discovery and stole it; perhaps the woman who cleans my house disposed of it in fear upon opening it. Truthfully? I’m almost relieved it is gone for I hadn’t experienced a restful night since bringing it into my home. My dreams were black, and my dog would bay at the threshold of the room that held the damned book. For now, the only Tome of the Future Ancients by Ice Dragon available for study is this one. Ah, the Obelisk results are finally in! 296 people voted, very nice. However, it sounds like he did not weigh votes based on ranking, which is odd, but interesting results either way.

xpost i never even differentiated between the two. to me, they seem like two threads dedicated to essentially the same stuff that both survived the year, more or less. and it seems like it would be easier to keep it all in one place.
i mean, i understand the difference between the genres, etc., but... i guess maybe the words psych and drone being in both titles may be throwing me off. if it were psych/space/freak and sludge/doom (i think of drone separately anyway), then i could see the point.
but if everyone else thinks they have distinct purposes as they are, by all means, ignore me.

and for the record, i for one definitely want some sort of thread that's dedicated more to psych, space, drone, kraut, whatever than folding any/all of that into rolling metal... these two threads were basically my sweet spot in 2012

I'm not sure which of the rolling threads to post this in (seems like non-indie punk may be more appropriate than this one, but this one is fresher) and there aren't any 2013 rolling threads yet but I've just discovered this record out of Philly on Richie Records and it sounds greathttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbfjxIRMSV0

It's Spacin "Deep Thuds." Lots of touchstones being signified in this one.

sorry about that alpine, I didn't remember who said it when I went off on the other thread, but knowing that it was out of a desire to keep things straight, rather than just moaning about pointless threads, makes what I said sound even worse than how I meant it #banDrugs2013

oh no worries at all. i wasn't riled up or anything. was just wondering if that was what you were responding to, or if there had been other discussion I'd missed, etc. all good.

i was responding to a few other things, but i'd rather just drop the matter entirely
