Man, I can still remember how sad it was when Mouse on Mars abandoned the lovely sound they'd been building on in the 90s and decided to embrace "indie electro" with its farty basses and distorted vocals. Based on those samples, looks like they're still on that trip. :(

this is still my favorite mouse on mars tune (circa 1994)

i'm with you. Niun Niggung is where i stop. i do like Von Sudenfed, however.

i never listen to 'radical connector' anymore but still 'idiology' sometimes, and the ones before.

IMO Idiology was the point where the shit really hit the fan (though the drill'n'bass influences on Niun Niggung were already worrisome). I mean, who exactly wanted to hear these guys sing? Not me, that's for sure.

Oh dear, Stevie, I'm sorry for posting all this negative stuff to this thread. It's just that at some point in the 90s MoM was like my MOST FAVOURITE BAND IN THE UNIVERSE, so their decline has always made me sad. I'm sure they're still awesome live, though. The one time I saw them live (post-Niun Niggung) was among the best electronic music gigs I've ever seen.

i really like the singing and sing-talking on 'idiology', and the stringy stuff. the latter especially sound so... configured, like mobiles.

Saw them live in 2007. They were pretty brutal, rocking hard.. not what I was expecting. Monkeytown is probably a good label for them. Hyped for the new one.

yeah, this is basically exactly how I feel about this band, and I agree, the live shows continued to floor me even as their records left me a bit cold.
thought idiology was aiight but ultimately a disappointment at the time. I remember really WORKING HARD at trying to like it and then being like, 'what's the point?' and shelving it. haven't gone back for... 10 years, probably? god, can't believe it's been so long.
anyway, glam/instrumentals were the high water marks for me. amazing records. such a liquid and organic sound... a bit like some of the vladislav delay/luomo/etc. stuff now that I think of it.

For some reason I always thought they were from Cologne, but have just read they were from Dusseldorf. So that makes them 2nd best band from Dusseldorf or they would have been 2nd best band from Cologne which is no disgrace.I agree with what was said upthread that barring Von Sudenfed they did lose their way a bit after Niun Niggung.
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 16 February 2012 17:17 (twelve years ago) link
I thought they were from Cologne too. The Sonig offices are def in Cologne, I made my pilgrimage to the A-Musik shop (which is - was? I hope it's still going - one super rad record shop btw) and peered through the doorway to the office behind while rifling through 7"s
and I'm still going to get a little excited abt this because I do still love some of their busy 00s material (mainly the Agit Itter It It minialbum thing), even if it isn't as all-time as, oh, everything before Niun Niggung

I have just been listening to Iaora Tahiti for the first time in years and it is not an album of its time. It is so fucking good.

Since you didn't ask for it, my favorite song off of each MoM album! A POX in fact (well not really I'd pick more than one song per album if it was a pox):
Frosch (Vulvaland)Saturday Night Worldcup Fever (Iaora Tahiti)Schnick Schnack Meltmade (Autoditacker)Chromantic (Instrumentals)Fantastic Analysis (Idiology)Tiplet Metal Plate (Glam)Albion Rose (Niun Niggung)Skik (Varcharz)Send Me Shivers (Radical Connector)Cache Coeur Naif (Cache Coeur Naif EP)

Every time I am just about to skip a track on Parastrophics because it sounds iritatingly like Prefuse 73 or just iritating, it suddenly transforms into something really nice. For me its a frustrating album, but I will stick with it a bit for old times sake.
