i like the noise! and the songs, but i appreciate the ability to do both (well) a whole lot.

another vote for dark sun here too, while we're at it -- it was perfect to listen to while i puttered around in the early evening and tried to forget about work.

But seriously. "Label" comp; feat. Sharpless, Bellows and Small Wonder (and some other stuff inc. Maxo, who is a 8-bit dude and weirdly prolific)

I've actually kinda stopped writing pop songs :/ I recorded all those vocal tracks when I was 20.

crut, your voice was a truly delightful surprise. much deeper than i expected!

I have to admit, I thought a few of the 'pop' songs were inspired by John Maus

Wiht - The Harrowing of the North
http://wihtleeds.bandcamp.com/album/the-harrowing-of-the-north

Stoner/psych, two long instrumental songs. I'm torn between feeling like a fuckwit for missing this year (I saw the good reviews in blogs, just totally spaced on checking it out) and being delighted to have found something new and great.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 17 February 2012 05:16 (twelve years ago) link

this PAST year

Brotherhood Of Sleep - Dark As Light

Stoner/psych. This one was on my list, but may not have been on Bandcamp when I checked previously.

^played with these guys last night. Their set was a wildly hallucinatory mix of drone-metal and sampled film dialogue (mostly from obv sources: Network, og Willy Wonka, etc) but now am listening to Transcendental Hamburger and there's a bit of that (along with a modicum of slap bass) but it is much more straightforward stripped down stoner metal. No guitars; only bass and drums. Digging it quite a bit. Hella nice guys, too.

Guadalupe Plata (2011)
http://guadalupeplata.bandcamp.com/album/guadalupe-plata-2011

Spanish blues/surf. Check out their video for "Serpiente Negra" that comes with the download. Most gorgeous dancer I've ever seen, like Elena Anaya from Sex And Lucia!

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 18 February 2012 18:17 (twelve years ago) link

Taking their name from Samuel R. Delany's apocalyptic sci-fi classic, Chicago-based Dhalgren's sound is rich and textured, with all four members contributing to a complex base of synth drone and processed vocals, under which a driving rhythm section occasionally appears to propel the music from dense ambience to ecstatic motorik synth rock.

couldn't say it better myself, super recommended if that description appeals to you

http://dhalgren.bandcamp.com/album/042210

america nova sounds good too from what's available for listening, but idk where to get it since apparently they don't want me to pay to download it.

The Father Costume, 2010
dhalgren-related feelies/felt inspired pop (i'm guessing here, but it's kinda obvious i think?) EP
cute cassette-era art too

A City Safe From Sea, 2010
http://acitysafefromsea.bandcamp.com/

I was roommates with one of the dudes in this band while they were writing/recording it, so I always felt weird about talking about it on ILM, but what great chaotic Unwound/Meneguar-influenced stuff, with trumpets and pitch-shifted riffs and big choruses. Still love it, still wish they'd ever play out.

That Gypsyhawk is all kinds of awesome. I bought the CD back when it came out. Love the Thin Lizzy influence, can't wait for the new one!

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, looks like Gypsyhawk had to raise money in order to take their new label Metal Blade up on their last-minute invite to SXSW. Sounds like the album is due around June.

White Triangles - the Night Is Ours
http://whitetriangles.bandcamp.com/album/the-night-is-ours
Icy ambient!

Icy maybe but definitely not forbidding. Like playing in the snow at night in a nice fur-lined parka and mittens.

Aww man, loved this band back in the day. It's an old record (2002), but apparently it's getting release on vinyl and is available on Bandcamp.

Ashrae Fax, from Greensboro NC. A lot of Cocteau Twins in their sound (a LOT, singer has a similar voice for sure) but done really well: textured synths, guitars, and programmed drums etc. Really love this record:

This record is one of the best things I've heard all damn year. Instrumetal doom of the highest order (yes, I dropped the n from instrumental on purpose). Feel the riffage of Iron Mtn:

Thanks for the recommendations, guys, this stuff is great!

Meanwhile, I have a request – anyone find any good Zombi/Goblin type stuff for free download on there? I've been looking for some.
