I have GNOD's latest EP and both of their records with White Hills. When they're on, they really are on but it seems to be quite a mutable thing with shifting members etc so you never really know what you're going to get out of them live.

Also just up is the first full-length by Deepspacepilots, that I mentioned upthread. They are also selling a limited number of copies of the CD. Not sure if they're gonna add that to Bandcamp page, or they're just taking orders via email (see FB page). It's really a great album and I can see why a band would want to charge $9 for it when they probably worked on it for 5 years (first EP came out in '06). But I wonder if they'd do better to build an audience by offering it via 'name your price'?

I like Seven the Spells, just rediscovered it, actually. Reminds me a little of some ex local guys, Warhammer 48k. oh wow, the first (Vern Rumsey engineered) Warhammer album is on spotify, that's great!

Feel like Circle deserve a mention for recent forward thinking psych.
My personal favorite is Prospekt but they release monumental albums at a frightening pace and I'm not super familiar with their stuff from the last five or so years. Luckily, there's a great thread on here detailing all of that stuff.

Warhammer did a reunion mini-tour last year, their last show in town was something else. Sounded like they'd been on the road for three months rather than three nights. Miss that band.

Vern Rumsey is a great name. seven that (the?) spells is something i would forget within a nanosecond of reading/hearing/thinking it. weird phrase! i will look them up though.

The Warhammer guys (they were practically still kids) were all obsessed with Unwound. They sent a tape to Vern and he dug it. They packed everything in to a minivan and drove from the middle of Missouri to Olympia WA and spent a week or so recording.

I know how it is when it seems like no one is listening to recommendations. I've checked out the Seven That Spells, Sungod and Dark Sun and have been enjoying them all, mostly while beavering away at work on a big project.

I really thought people would go nuts for Venomous Maximus along the lines of Ghost, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats and Christian Mistress, but I just hear crickets ;) I think more will get on board when their full length comes out.

Looks like I better pull the trigger on the Devil's Blood/In Solitude tickets for the Friday the 13th show in April at Bottom Lounge. Anyone planning to go? La Lechera?

xp Ha, I make it to Empty Bottle maybe once a year, so not my bag. I don't like how their shows are so late on weeknights, and the only way home is an expensive cab ride. Ultra Lounge is really starting to put together some good shows. Coming up are Rollo Tomasi, Truckfighters, Hull/East Of The Wall/Royal Thunder/Black Tusk (all in one night!), Across Tundras, and Negura Bunget. Same place does booking there as Reggies (where I'm planning to see Turisas).

Acid Mothers Temple is tempting though, and I'm blown away that feedtime are coming in March. That's a band I did not expect to see again!

posted about this in the Bandcamp page, but I dig these guys. Two guys--bass & drums--saw them play live last night. The bass player started off their first "song" by holding a power drill up to his pickups and stabbing his bass with a knife, followed by sampling the speech from Network. Wildly hallucinatory mix of drone metal, samples, and a highly controlled aura of dread (even if a lot of the stuff on their page is more conventional stoner-metal)

Venomous Maximus is cool though it lacks the beguiling pop sense that made Ghost/Uncle Acid seem special. They seem to be mine a more trad-stoner vein like Fu Manchu or Orange Goblin. It's a rocking record though.

Haven't listened to all of the Deepspacepilots album but that one was good too; predictably I tend to like the album's prettier, more melodic moments, ie "Light of the Sun" & "Black Emanuelle". I really like "Black Emanuelle"

Greenleaf has had an evolving cast the past decade. Those disappointed when Dozer went on indefinite hiatus when vocalist Fredrik Norden went back to school will be pleased that Greenleaf is basically Dozer with Truckfighters' Oskar Cedermalm on vocals. Speaking of Truckfighters, they killed it Monday night. Good thing, as last year they did not impress my friends at Reggies. I knew it was just technical difficulties. Their amp literally ignited on fire, billowing smoke. They borrowed another band's amp and broke that too. Third time worked, but did not sound great. The vocals particularly were improperly amplified/mixed. Last night at Ultra Lounge there were no such problems. The sound was perfect and their performance was epic. They reminded me slightly of Nirvana on their Bleach tour if you switch uptight/intense Kurt to bass (Ozo), and if Keith Moon and Animal merged and took up guitar (the manic, muppety Dengo). With the satisfying heavy fuzz and the variety of amazing tones Dengo squeezed out, I'd rank this show higher. They were in Memphis last night, and Nola tonight. I picked up a CD of first album Gravity X and their mockumentary DVD.

There's a Desertfest in London too, Apr 6-8, but missing my faves Colour Haze, Ufomammut and Motorpsycho. Wish the Berlin lineup could do one in the U.S.! Hell, even All Tomorrow's Parties in London May 25-27 is featuring SLAYER (performing Reign in Blood), FLOOR, MELVINS, MUDHONEY, SLEEP, SLEEPY SUN and YOB. No such lineups at the various ATPs in the U.S., of course. Argh.

That Horisont song sounds like Witchcraft, which is fine by me. Don't hear Priest or Scorpions myself, but it's a good sound.

Maybe Rocka Rolla and Fly The Rainbow era perhaps. I'm re-listening to their first album, Två Sidor Av Horisonten, which kicks off with a nice Thin Lizzy guitar lead on "Nightrider."

Many of you have probably heard that Southern Lord is reissuing a deluxe version of Sleep's Dopesmoker.

For the 2012 reissue, there are some very notable changes. The original studio tapes have been remastered presenting the album as the band had originally intended. The audio is clearer, louder, and at last brings a true representation of SLEEP's hour-plus Weedian chronicle. Exclusive to this Southern Lord edition is brand new artwork by long time SLEEP artist Arik Roper, to be unveiled in the coming weeks. Additionally, this reborn version of Dopesmoker boasts an unreleased live recording of one of the band's best all-time performances: "Holy Mountain" from San Francisco's I-Beam in 1994.

It's unclear to me, however, if they're comparing it to the Tee Pee version or the Jerusalem version.

I don't need another version of Dopesmoker. The cult of Sleep is one of the most inexplicable aspects of modern metal culture to me. Right up there with the cult of Om. The best thing Matt Pike ever did was leave Sleep and form High On Fire.

I like Orange Goblin enough to have picked up their box set on Rise Above last year. And while the new one is an improvement over their last couple, I can't help but take them for granted along the lines of Motorhead. So who got displaced? I guess Conan might not have made as big an impact as I'd thought?

Like we mentioned yesterday: we now enter a different part of the league, we enter a league of extraordinary releases. For to reach Number 4 we have to add almost 50 points to Orange Goblins final total. These guys have been making the list since it’s conception and actually made it to the number 1 position of that first year. This year they find themselves stranded on place Number four with 192 points. But their spiritual expedition into the realms and dynamics of heavy music does not care for numbers of points. Filled with seductive arrangements of droning strings, tablas, chants and melodies woven together in a hazy melange of rock at its most languorous the album transports you to an entirely different dimension. And only on a very rare occasion does the bass of yesteryear make its appearance in a sting of sludge. Made for Opium dreams; Ibogaine reveries and Ayahuasca epiphanies…

Om - Advaitic Songs

Yeah, they like Om. It wasn't what I expected but after sitting on it half the year I started re-listening to it and I started appreciating it a lot more, and it crept into my top 20. Previous years' lists can be found at the end of this.

Should you be a gambling man than at one point in your career you will always cross the wrong wires and find yourself burned to a cinder by an electric firestorm. But you will also come across that sure shot; that one lucky guess that isn’t lucky at all. So I ain’t going to bet anyone if they can guess where the guys from Number 3 come from. Cause I am pretty sure seeing as almost half of the list hails from that beautiful country in Scandinavia that you know which that might be. We climb almost twenty-five points and are treated to groovy blues inspired by the seventies and driving stoner grafted on that happening feeling. And then to think they already made it to the Number Two position last year! Let’s hope they have another album ready for us in 2013!!!

Pfew and finally; on Number Two we once again find a band from a different country than Sweden. Germany to be exact. And the city of Berlin to be precise. These freaks wound up with almost 35 points more than Graveyard and looking at their band name they should be considered neighbors or at least be in business together? And yes, they are honoring those bands of yore. That good music, that still remains, to this day, the best that was ever made. And these guys sound as if they were right there; at its conception. They sound like the absolute best of Sabbath, Zeppelin, Cheer and all those other great 60’s / 70’s proto-metal artists. And they never sound like they are trying to emulate; but rather like they showed them the way. Smell it, sniff it, smoke it and enjoy their fuzzed out slightly decayed sound!

I guess there’s only one way and one place to end this list truly righteous and beautifully poetic. For it is the year of Sweden and of a lust for that vintage feeling of musical magic. So it is fitting that these guys that sparked so many of the bands we listen to ended up on the Number One position. For they themselves honor the music that inspired them and most of the other great releases this year. With twenty points more than Kadavar they pay homage to the heavy and darkened sounds of yore and exhume a dusty brown air of nostalgia but never one that is stale or forlorn. In fact their vintage atmosphere has a loud and modern feeling to it. Which is something they might have to thank their new members for. It is mystical music that speaks of ancient legends and conjures up visions of true artists fighting their way out of kaleidoscopic straightjackets of their own making. And cast away they dare to take flight in a new fashion that takes some getting used to. But once the buttons are buttoned; it is snug and fits like a glove!

i mean, i understand the difference between the genres, etc., but... i guess maybe the words psych and drone being in both titles may be throwing me off. if it were psych/space/freak and sludge/doom (i think of drone separately anyway), then i could see the point.

but if everyone else thinks they have distinct purposes as they are, by all means, ignore me.

and for the record, i for one definitely want some sort of thread that's dedicated more to psych, space, drone, kraut, whatever than folding any/all of that into rolling metal... these two threads were basically my sweet spot in 2012
