I would back your $10 project with ten of my own cents.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

I actually made the first kickstarter donation yesterday. My friend's sister is trying to make a horror movie.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I think kickstarter is generally OK and a good idea, but when I saw that there was a kickstarter page to put out a record by D|smemberment Pl@n's Tr@vis M0rris0n, I had to lol.

long duk dan (dan m), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I agree but honestly, unless it is someone I know or a close relative of someone I know and that person is doing something that is relevant to my interests, I'm unlikely to donate anything. Like, after registering, kickstarter.com was all "Browse around for other awesome projects to support!" which... nah.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

i've been donating to some for the first time, but i still hate when bands are (imo) asking for more money than they need for shit they maybe shouldn't be spending money on anyway. like, why should you get to record in the studio and get your music mixed/mastered/replicated at no cost to yourself, especially when everyone else is spending less money on buying their own gear and learning how to record themselves?

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe they need to recoup all the money they've spent on music lessons and e-mail blasts and taking cabs to gigs.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

i think i would feel pretty shitty about setting up a kickstarter for anything i wanted to do but that's just me. if i had a ton of disposable income i'd probably want to pay for my friends to do cool things. i did wish i had the money to help pay for the silkworm documentary (the band silkworm, not the the insect) because that is something i want to come to fruition.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

in summary, maybe i shouldn't feel so shitty about this

i talked about this on the kickstarter thread but one of the founders of kickstarter is a guy who 1) used to post on ILX frequently and 2) went to college with me and was at the college radio station the same time (we were co-music directors one year).

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

where "this" = "theoretically asking for funding on kickstarter." don't worry, i'm not planning any kickstarter ventures really.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

basically i think there are lots of cool things that deserve funding on kickstarter but there's a lot of gross stuff too.

like this is pretty crazy: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/117867-double-fine-kickstarter (TLDR version - video game company Double Fine raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter in one day). Double Fine makes cool games and I'm glad they get to make more but it seems weird they couldn't raise money any other way based on their reputations.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Oh wow I had no idea Y.S. was involved w/it!

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Knowing you, I am unsurprised that you would not want to start a kickstarter campaign for a thing you want to do, but I would gleefully support any project you "kickstarted" there. That goes for all the Chicago ILXors (and your sisters, providing they are trying to make horror movies).

i only found out within the past year i think.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of forgot about him. But I did meet him briefly at P4k Fest a few years ago.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

i think i'd be ok with doing a kickstarter if i came up with a really amazing idea that i was sure i could follow through on and was really worth people's money. but what are the odds of that?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Build a better dildo.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

didn't momus do this like 15 years ago?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

xpost!

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

man, there is some shitty stuff on kickstarter

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

it's crazy what has like $10,000 in funding though. i thought people were poor these days.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

sorry, i should be posting on the kickstarter thread.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

You should be able to negative contribute to something. Like, I have $50 worth of hate for the smidgen stick and I would be willing to pay that much to crush this man's dreams.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

otm

i contributed to a buddy who got a custom quarter-tone guitar made, and is performing specially commissioned music.

if you can't see that, it's a guitar with a shitload of frets.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

man, there is some shitty stuff on kickstarter the Internet.

I may do one to take the Interrogation show to NY and/or Edinburgh.

ok hitting the road, see some of you guys tonight!

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

NEWSFLASH: We are switching plans and D and I will be at the Green Mill show tomorrow night rather than tonight. I'm stupid exhausted and no fun to be around.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

Jordanian I am sorry, but we will totes be there tomorrow. I just need to recover from back to back classes, two mad shitty meetings, and falling on my face in the alley while simultaneously flinging a bag of dog poop into the air.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

It is no fun out there right now.

tanuki, Friday, 10 February 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

Like a Russian model out there: very pretty, no fun.

Who Amandawg, I hope your face and your poo are OK.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

poo is in the dumpster
hip, shoulder, and knee are ouchy!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

that's right, i said ouchy and i am allowed to because i FELL ON MY FACE IN AN ALLEY
that gives me certain rights

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

Aw poor thing! Falls really suck.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Mamada, I was in your neighborhood on Sunday evening. I went to Mayne Stage (??) on Morse and the gay bar known as The Glenwood and to Oasis.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

Wheeeee I hope you did not find it filthy or full of chicken feet.

Please note that D and I are definitely going to the Green Mill tonight, perhaps we will see you there!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Saturday, 11 February 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

Reminder: Tonight is the filthy fictions show. Come to the Whistler at 7:30. John, that includes you.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Sunday, 12 February 2012 23:11 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry, I have a hot date. Have fun!

jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 00:37 (twelve years ago) link

Also, Jordan, good to see you last night! We split toward the end of the third set. Liked all the MJ tunes.

jaymc, Monday, 13 February 2012 00:38 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, thanks for coming! it was great to see everybody.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 13 February 2012 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

totes! i was glad to finally meet your gf too. i like her.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 13 February 2012 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

also i did not win the contest, fyi. i didn't even get a prize for participating. i guess i have the pride and satisfaction of a job well done, and that's probably what matters. i'm not a competitive person anyway.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 13 February 2012 15:17 (twelve years ago) link

aw

jesse posted a picture to the what's happening thread on 77 *without asking me*
(but i don't mind. i secretly wanted someone to do that and i look alright :)

i guess maybe i should market myself as a bachelorette party clown and maybe i could embarrass some people for money.

(aside --> no joke, i met a young female clown on the train once on my way to work. she complimented my bag and then somehow we started talking about where we were going and she told me that she is a clown. so i guess it's a thing?)

Is he one of those "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" people? They make me IA.

Steamtable Willie (WmC), Monday, 13 February 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

it's ok because it's not ugly
i would be complaining if it were ugly but i look alright.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Monday, 13 February 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

That's a topgrading question. xpost
