when i go to nhu lan a lot of times i feel like one sandwich isn't quite enough but two is too much. it's annoying.

sandwiches should be bigger. or smaller.

i'll also be having an avocado smoothie btw.

i should probably get a spring roll or some other kind of side next time i go to nhu lan. i pretty much only go to nhu lan when sarah's out of town because she doesn't like banh mi.

that reminds me I saw that Ba Le on Check Please! recently... there was one dude on the show who just kept calling it and the surrounding neighborhood "dirty" and I'm like wtf dude have you been to Chicago before?

Barf. I just watched the video and yeh, fuck that guy. When Alpana asks him what he thought, he can't make it through a sentence without interrupting himself to say how dirty the area was. "I took my nephew -- and again, the area was just [cringes apologetically, sucks in through his teeth] really dirty -- and inside it was really chaotic so we ate outside and it was kind of.... [cringe, hiss] dirty."

He also said something about the "uniqueness" of the neighborhood and how you gotta expect to "see things."

i was trying to figure out yesterday if there's a minimum amount you can set for your goal on kickstarter, but i couldn't find out. i thought it would be funny to set up like a $10 kickstarter, but the max people can support you is 10 cents

I actually made the first kickstarter donation yesterday. My friend's sister is trying to make a horror movie.

I think kickstarter is generally OK and a good idea, but when I saw that there was a kickstarter page to put out a record by D|smemberment Pl@n's Tr@vis M0rris0n, I had to lol.

I agree but honestly, unless it is someone I know or a close relative of someone I know and that person is doing something that is relevant to my interests, I'm unlikely to donate anything. Like, after registering, kickstarter.com was all "Browse around for other awesome projects to support!" which... nah.

i've been donating to some for the first time, but i still hate when bands are (imo) asking for more money than they need for shit they maybe shouldn't be spending money on anyway. like, why should you get to record in the studio and get your music mixed/mastered/replicated at no cost to yourself, especially when everyone else is spending less money on buying their own gear and learning how to record themselves?

Maybe they need to recoup all the money they've spent on music lessons and e-mail blasts and taking cabs to gigs.

i think i would feel pretty shitty about setting up a kickstarter for anything i wanted to do but that's just me. if i had a ton of disposable income i'd probably want to pay for my friends to do cool things. i did wish i had the money to help pay for the silkworm documentary (the band silkworm, not the the insect) because that is something i want to come to fruition.

in summary, maybe i shouldn't feel so shitty about this

i talked about this on the kickstarter thread but one of the founders of kickstarter is a guy who 1) used to post on ILX frequently and 2) went to college with me and was at the college radio station the same time (we were co-music directors one year).

where "this" = "theoretically asking for funding on kickstarter." don't worry, i'm not planning any kickstarter ventures really.

basically i think there are lots of cool things that deserve funding on kickstarter but there's a lot of gross stuff too.

Double Fine makes cool games and I'm glad they get to make more but it seems weird they couldn't raise money any other way based on their reputations.

Knowing you, I am unsurprised that you would not want to start a kickstarter campaign for a thing you want to do, but I would gleefully support any project you "kickstarted" there. That goes for all the Chicago ILXors (and your sisters, providing they are trying to make horror movies).

I kind of forgot about him. But I did meet him briefly at P4k Fest a few years ago.

i think i'd be ok with doing a kickstarter if i came up with a really amazing idea that i was sure i could follow through on and was really worth people's money. but what are the odds of that?
