the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

i should probably get a spring roll or some other kind of side next time i go to nhu lan. i pretty much only go to nhu lan when sarah's out of town because she doesn't like banh mi.

tbf to Check Please dude, that T at Broadway and Argyle is the only place in Chicago where I regularly came across chicken feet lying in the gutter. But really, fuck that guy.

NICK. Eat one and one half sandwich.

carl agatha, Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

JORDAN. Choose the lemon grass pork sausage sandwich hurry

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:38 (twelve years ago) link

ok! i was thinking that or the bbq pork, with a passing interest in the meatball.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

bbq pork is top notch
do not get the refrigerator spring rolls, they are gummy

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 9 February 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

Lemon grass sausage! LEMON GRASS SAUSAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111

There are or used to be sweet rice and coconut crepe-type things for desert and they are very good.

carl agatha, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

I gotta say lemongrass too. But the bbq is good.

Dangit now I want to go there. I *am* going to be up at like Lincoln and Foster tonight, it not that much farther away...

long duk dan (dan m), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago) link

ok lemongrass. or both.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:17 (twelve years ago) link

I saw this weekend that that there is a brand new banh mi place on Broadway at Carmen.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:20 (twelve years ago) link

Those big giant bags of frozen

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

that reminds me I saw that Ba Le on Check Please! recently... there was one dude on the show who just kept calling it and the surrounding neighborhood "dirty" and I'm like wtf dude have you been to Chicago before?

Barf. I just watched the video and yeh, fuck that guy. When Alpana asks him what he thought, he can't make it through a sentence without interrupting himself to say how dirty the area was. "I took my nephew -- and again, the area was just [cringes apologetically, sucks in through his teeth] really dirty -- and inside it was really chaotic so we ate outside and it was kind of.... [cringe, hiss] dirty."

He also said something about the "uniqueness" of the neighborhood and how you gotta expect to "see things."

I wish a compulsive hand washing affliction on this guy.

What was his restaurant pick?

I was curious too but I just couldn't stand to watch for myself.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 01:42 (twelve years ago) link

some place in River North called Zocalo

long duk dan (dan m), Friday, 10 February 2012 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

not to be confused with Vocalo

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 10 February 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago) link

uh oh, i wonder how concerned i should be about the snow + getting to chicago tonight?

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 15:03 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe tho iirc it's mostly lake effect so it might not be as bad as far inland as the expressways you'll be taking.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

Why does this guy have his bike on the train during rush hour. Bad boy.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

I'm guilty of that — once when there was a sudden torrent of rain and another time when my back tire was completely flat

tanuki, Friday, 10 February 2012 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Bosslady asked me to make her a reservation at a place called Brunch in downtown and when I called they said that they only take reservations by email to the manager. I sort of hate that place now.

garbage corn fan (Je55e), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

you have to be friends with the manager on facebook

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

reservations by twitter dm only

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link

to make a reservation, post your desired time on tumblr and receive at least three (3) re-blogs

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

it's faster to bribe the manager via his kickstarter

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

i was trying to figure out yesterday if there's a minimum amount you can set for your goal on kickstarter, but i couldn't find out. i thought it would be funny to set up like a $10 kickstarter, but the max people can support you is 10 cents

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

I would back your $10 project with ten of my own cents.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

I actually made the first kickstarter donation yesterday. My friend's sister is trying to make a horror movie.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I think kickstarter is generally OK and a good idea, but when I saw that there was a kickstarter page to put out a record by D|smemberment Pl@n's Tr@vis M0rris0n, I had to lol.

long duk dan (dan m), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I agree but honestly, unless it is someone I know or a close relative of someone I know and that person is doing something that is relevant to my interests, I'm unlikely to donate anything. Like, after registering, kickstarter.com was all "Browse around for other awesome projects to support!" which... nah.

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 19:35 (twelve years ago) link

i've been donating to some for the first time, but i still hate when bands are (imo) asking for more money than they need for shit they maybe shouldn't be spending money on anyway. like, why should you get to record in the studio and get your music mixed/mastered/replicated at no cost to yourself, especially when everyone else is spending less money on buying their own gear and learning how to record themselves?

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Friday, 10 February 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe they need to recoup all the money they've spent on music lessons and e-mail blasts and taking cabs to gigs.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

i think i would feel pretty shitty about setting up a kickstarter for anything i wanted to do but that's just me. if i had a ton of disposable income i'd probably want to pay for my friends to do cool things. i did wish i had the money to help pay for the silkworm documentary (the band silkworm, not the the insect) because that is something i want to come to fruition.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:37 (twelve years ago) link

in summary, maybe i shouldn't feel so shitty about this

i talked about this on the kickstarter thread but one of the founders of kickstarter is a guy who 1) used to post on ILX frequently and 2) went to college with me and was at the college radio station the same time (we were co-music directors one year).

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

where "this" = "theoretically asking for funding on kickstarter." don't worry, i'm not planning any kickstarter ventures really.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

basically i think there are lots of cool things that deserve funding on kickstarter but there's a lot of gross stuff too.

like this is pretty crazy: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/117867-double-fine-kickstarter (TLDR version - video game company Double Fine raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter in one day). Double Fine makes cool games and I'm glad they get to make more but it seems weird they couldn't raise money any other way based on their reputations.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Oh wow I had no idea Y.S. was involved w/it!

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:42 (twelve years ago) link

Knowing you, I am unsurprised that you would not want to start a kickstarter campaign for a thing you want to do, but I would gleefully support any project you "kickstarted" there. That goes for all the Chicago ILXors (and your sisters, providing they are trying to make horror movies).

carl agatha, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

i only found out within the past year i think.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:46 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of forgot about him. But I did meet him briefly at P4k Fest a few years ago.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

i think i'd be ok with doing a kickstarter if i came up with a really amazing idea that i was sure i could follow through on and was really worth people's money. but what are the odds of that?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:51 (twelve years ago) link

Build a better dildo.

jaymc, Friday, 10 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

didn't momus do this like 15 years ago?

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

xpost!

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

man, there is some shitty stuff on kickstarter

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 10 February 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

it's crazy what has like $10,000 in funding though. i thought people were poor these days.
