Hating on jungle sounds is nagl. It's like hating on sea noises or something.

Anyone who's a bit nonplussed by this album should check out the excellent second 'If This Is House I Want My Money Back' compilation from last year, which features a more upbeat Talabot as well as a load of other dudes from this whole scene (Pional, Beautiful Swimmers, Permanent Vacation etc). Also if contains Mano Le Tough's 'Let's Not Talk About Love' which is one of the best records made by anyone last year.

^^^^ Every word of that is spot on. I love Talabot's tune on that but the Mano Le Tough is GODLIKE.

Tim F, Thursday, 9 February 2012 09:38 (twelve years ago) link

also this remix is a must hear

Probably time for a Mano Le Tough thread soon enough, his Stories EP was also ace and there's an album in the pipeline that I reckon will surpass Talabot's.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 09:42 (twelve years ago) link

yeah the stories ep was amazing, esp "take it back"

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Thursday, 9 February 2012 09:44 (twelve years ago) link

pretty much track Mano Le Tough is releasing is just sound palette catnip to me

I DIED, Thursday, 9 February 2012 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

pretty much EVERY track

I DIED, Thursday, 9 February 2012 09:46 (twelve years ago) link

Album coming out soon too.

talked a bit to him a couple of weeks ago, album coming after the summer.

Loving Mano Le Tough, ilxor TIP!

MikoMcha, Thursday, 9 February 2012 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

'if this is house i want my money back zwei' *was* really good, but i have been having a very hard time getting into this new permanent vacation 'selected label works' thing (save for the pional tracks i guess)

psychgawsple, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

i also cosign on the mano

psychgawsple, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:35 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah that third Permanent Vacation comp was really disappointing, far too many Sally Shapiro-type sadsack vocals all over the place. I really liked about half the second one and the first one is classic for all time, virtually everything there is wonderful.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 February 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link

The only problem with "don't leave me (friendly pattern version" is that the grinding boogie-machine outro should last five minutes rather than thirty seconds.

Tim F, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:00 (twelve years ago) link

Remember being disappointed/bored with the first Permanent Vacation Selected Works compilation when it came out - especially since there seemed to be much more interesting neo-Balearic stuff around at the time, even the Fred Deakin Nu Balearica comp - but 'If This Is House I Want My Money Back Zwei' is really nice.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:37 (twelve years ago) link

Also loving Mano Le Tough, thanks for the tip!

toby, Thursday, 9 February 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

I substituted a few of the other Permanent Vacation releases from last year with the more lacklustre efforts on Vol 3 to make a better version. It really bothers me that Argy's "I Wish You Were Here" isn't on it.

Mano Le Tough is fab too, I love the remix of Aloe Blacc.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 9 February 2012 22:56 (twelve years ago) link

Really pleased to see all the love for Mano, he is a really good mate of mine from Dublin, he's been in Berlin 4/5 years and it's really working out for him now. His flatmate is another really good pal and will be doing stuff on Permanent Vacation also.

Please tell him to name his album Hangin' Tough.

When I play his tracks out they always get a great reaction, even from people who I don't think of as being into that side of house.

I DIED, Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

he actually got the name from this sort of party house/bunch of people in Dublin who referred to their flat as "hang tough".

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 9 February 2012 23:51 (twelve years ago) link

Funny coincidence - I've known Mano for ~20 years, we used to live on the same road and hang out all the time as kids. I started following his work due to the personal connection but I do think it's great music regardless.

I used to know this guy I met on Soulseek, he sent me so many strange Chicago tracks. His username was lil808. He sent me a list of the best Dance Mania releases, with catalogue numbers, and I followed that list like it was my religion, if I saw a record with that number I’d buy it on sight, he was never wrong. I built my taste in house music via friends, forums like Global Darkness or Clone Records, it was an underground world you know. Nowadays everyone is reissuing the strange tracks I’ve known for 10 years. It’s nice now when young people approach me at the booth to find out the name of a track, ‘cos there’s lots of information out there but people don’t always have someone showing them the way. The WBMX house mixes were a big influence on me, people like Mickey Oliver from the Hot Mix 5, I was so lucky that people sent me those files. Let me be romantic – we have lost a bit of magic over the years.

FACT interview

Talabot's nostalgia for the peek Soulseek filesharing era. And I remember at that time thinking how post-underground music was...

When The Past Was Present and So Will Be Now are both really great. but apart from those and a couple of other tracks, i think i'm in the 'this is a bit dull' camp :(

jabba hands, Monday, 13 February 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

some of the other stuff just seems sort of...throwaway

jabba hands, Monday, 13 February 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

after a couple more listens, some of this is starting to stick with me. "Oro y Sangre" is pretty cool

dmr, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:45 (twelve years ago) link

dunno it it's talabot, as it's listed as "unknown", but the earth wind and fire remix in the xlr8r podcast is amazing. if it is him it is easily the best thing he's ever done.

gotta thank this thread for making me listen to In Sides for the first time. also really liking the john talabot album.

lil kink (Matt P), Monday, 13 February 2012 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

love the way this record starts with a mish mash of the lush jungle of Depak Ine (my favorite track so far), the sleek cool urban Destiny and then the wonky, queasy El Oeste. the vocals on Journeys really drags it down, though (and I'm corny enough to like Panda Bear vocals).

mizzell, Tuesday, 14 February 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link

this is my favorite dance album in years

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

there are some parts that almost have this carnival-esque vibe but sorta dark... in places (esp "depak ine") it reminds me of mungolian jet set if they went for something more lush and pop

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

i agree that's it not completely face to the sun balearic but that's sorta what's nice about it, when those moments peek through it's pretty powerful

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

I love the way, on the second track (I think?) the track just about sounds like it's going to pick up into something absolutely mindblowing but then slows down and stops.

Alexandre Dumbass (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

gotta thank this thread for making me listen to In Sides for the first time

Ha! I also dug out and spun Middle of Nowhere for the first time in years.

More importantly, thanks all for the 'If This Is House I Want My Money Back Zwei' recommendation. Lovely record although, ironically, the Talabot track is one of the few I can't really get into; favourites are the Hunee and Session Victim contributions. Would love to hear more by them.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 28 February 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

this was one of the best tracks of last year imo: http://soundcloud.com/sessionvictim/session-victim-good-intentions
