I left half-washed laundry sitting in a bucket of soapy water for like 4 days. Rinsed it out last night but the odor of mildew has now permeated my entire foyer where the drying rack is. Balls.

I was hoping the colder temps would keep growth at bay. Apparently in vain.

i recommend soaking in 1 pts white vinegar to 3 pts sulfuric acid, then drying at 450 degrees for 24 hours

made kraft macaroni & cheese, started boiling the noodles until i realized i was out of milk, so i added an extra tablespoon of butter to "compensate"

wait ... there's technically nothing wrong with that, is there?

i know a lot of chefs who use mostly butter, some stock or noodle water and a skosh of cream

i guess you end up with cacio e pepe without the pepe

next time anybody criticizes you for eating on the toilet, tell them you're reenacting dante's vision of hell, or maybe that scene from pantagruel and gargantua

I'm wearing one of those pairs of smelly tights today, because I didn't have/take the time to rinse w vinegar and re-dry them. Every time I move I can smell a waft of mildew.

eh ymmv but ime that's been pretty much standard since i turned 32

the late great, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link

did you try febreezing them??

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 9 February 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

four weeks pass...

pretty stoked because i've seen more dead cockroaches than living ones in my place lately

― ⚓ (gr8080), Saturday, October 8, 2011 7:36 PM (5 months ago)

cockroach situation in my place has been really, really good lately. very few sightings, considering they're everywhere on this island.

however, this morning, my only clean work clothes were a wrinkly disaster (via dirt bag style). so i got my iron and ironing board out, only to discover that four or five cockroaches were living INSIDE THE WATER TANK OF MY IRON (it is a translucent tank so i could see them). already late for work (via dirt bag style) and left with no other choice, i heated up the iron and decided to get the wrinkles out of my clothes as fast possible.

but the ~*STENCH*~ of hot, steamy, cockroach shit/piss/bodies/etc that blasted my face was one of the most horrific things i have ever experienced in my entire life (made worse by the fact that due to high winds lately, all my windows were closed for the first time in years).

gotta buy a new iron after work.

thank god my clothes didn't retain the smell (i think).

omg

call all destroyer, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

my iron is on the floor nearby and i'm just staring at it

call all destroyer, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:11 (twelve years ago) link

I've heard of roaches being INSIDE THE MICROWAVE DISPLAY WINDOW but never inside an iron. I can't...think about your post in too much detail without losing my shit so I'm going to pretend it happened in a story instead of irl.

reminds me of stories i've read of ants infesting automatic coffee makers, living in the reservoir for the water. tossed my coffee maker and never looked back after that.

it gave a friend goosebumps when i told him

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

haha so this happened a while ago but under my sink was just this crazy cockroach nest so I sprayed a ton of bug spray and the sound of dozens of them dying was sorta like popcorn popping. cleaning that up was fun.

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:21 (twelve years ago) link

the only cockroach i saw in my old apartment was nice enough to waddle to the middle of my foyer and die there overnight--thanks buddy, there was no suspense with you.

the mere thought of ironing cockroach stench into my clothing

ugh

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

I have seen a total of about two insects inside my home, and one was a friendly spider.

Apparently there was one mouse but I never knew it until the cat found it for me

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

you guys should see my place these days it looks like a model home

of course much of that is due to me figuring out that one way to cope w/ the teeth-grinding anxiety of my possibly-ex-GF suddenly moving out is to windex and wipe all of the surfaces in the house, over and over again

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

it seems really counter-intuitive but daily cleaning is a lot more fun than cleaning once a month then letting everything go to hell

wait i was supposed to clean like all day today

the mere thought of ironing cockroach stench into my clothing

approximately the most horrendous thing that has ever happened in the history of clothes. plus it is generally possible to turn the steam off?

you emptied the tank out first, right

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 8 March 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

i can't decide if it's true horror or not largely due to that

i have substituted an easter egg for at least one meal each of the last five days and i am starting to feel really sick as a result. oops

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 8 March 2012 23:07 (twelve years ago) link

i did that last yr

having reread the thread that's not all that dirtbag

the place i live in we had to wait extra days for the landlord to get cleaners in because of the state the previous inhabitants had left it in. notably they decided cleaning the bathtub was enough of a non starter that instead they put in a new one. mainly things were fixed by the time we got here however several weeks later i had cause to move the bed away from the wall to look for something, and discovered not just a patch of used condom wrappers but also used condoms, also a used tampon buried in several layers of toilet roll

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Thursday, 8 March 2012 23:34 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, so was it a furnished place that came with the bed? Otherwise, how did you not see that stuff when moving in the bed?

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:29 (twelve years ago) link

yes, it was a furnished place that came with the bed

desperado, rough rider (thomp), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

this is surely not a thread in which we own furniture

true dirtbag style is sleeping on a borrowed futon mattress, no frame, on the floor

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:49 (twelve years ago) link

I slept on a mattress on the floor for over a year

flagp∞st (dayo), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:50 (twelve years ago) link

the cheap metal bed frames are pretty easy to come by, but they take box springs... and who the fuck wants to lug around or even own those?

valleys of your mind (mh), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

the first one was just a cheap foam mattress that folded 3 ways. one day I was cleaning, picked up the edge, and realized that the entire underside was sopping wet. I had had a fever w/ nightsweats a few days ago and apparently the water never evaporated from the mattress.

flagp∞st (dayo), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

I sleep on a matress on the floor no frame, but, uh, it's on a boxspring or w/e

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Friday, 9 March 2012 00:53 (twelve years ago) link

My car has broken glass in the passenger-side foot place. I guess my wife brought a mason jar of iced tea into the car and then left it to get sucked up by all the rest of the junk there. Then I set something down on it and now it's a pile of junk full of broken glass.
