Hey, related to culinary students, I had dinner last week at the dining room at Kendall College. They have a weeknight prix-fixe 3-course dinner--it's like a restaurant, except the servers and everyone else is in class and being observed. Very good food, nice view of downtown.

well she probably won't if no one else does. she really doesn't like trivia so i think i could only convince her if it would be more of a social thing.

I would like to preliminarily commit to go on the week of my birthday, that would be 2/21.

This was amusing here, but when I saw it out of context on the Excelsior thread I actually snortOLed and now I can't stop giggling about it.

I can't remember if we've talked about it here before or not, but the blog that broke the "gang sign city sticker" story, Second City Cop, is horrifying. I didn't feel protected by the police in any way before reading it, now I feel actively disdained by them.
― long duk dan (dan m), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago) link
Oh god yes that blog is horrifying, iirc I was introduced to it via one of these threads.
― Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link
I used to read it bc at some point, he expressed a surprisingly nuanced understanding of race/poverty/crime. And then one day he's blogging about all the ghetto animals or whatever and THEN got all huffy when ppl were like "Dude, that's racist." So I stopped reading.
― carl agatha, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link
Really its the comments from his readers that make it even more troubling, these are from a post about an illegal, overcrowded club:
Fuck it! 19P every call you get there...let them kill each other!
I suggest bulldozing or catching it afire the next time it's filled at four times the allowed capacity. Is hoping for an E2 repeat a bad thing?
Let an E2 type disaster happen. Show up and calmly tell everyone that fire is on the way. In the meantime let them crush, stab, shoot and whatever else they want to do to each other.
And, apparently, most of these regular commenters are cops.

OMG yeah, now I remember why I quit reading too. Stay far far away from the comments section on the Anthony Abbate case post.

I just read about the gang sign thing and it is suuuuuuper dumb. Like, super dumb. You know what those hands look like? Hands drawn by somebody who can't draw hands very well. That's it. Good christ, what a bunch of fucking dummies.

The previous Friday, Rakesh J. Baker, 23, drove his SUV five miles inbound on the outbound Stevenson Expressway before crashing head-on with another vehicle on the ramp from LakeShore Drive. No one was killed.
On Dec. 15, a driver traveled 11 miles north in the southbound lanes of the Kennedy and Edens expressways before he was stopped. Miraculously, he didn't hit anyone. The driver was arrested on DUI charges.

what would you guys call the neighborhood around grand & milwaukee & halsted? also, any restaurant recommendations around there?
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:53 (twelve years ago) link
according to my bike map it's considered river north
― tanuki, Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:55 (twelve years ago) link
there's a kitsch'n at chicago and halsted, that's the only place i can think of
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:56 (twelve years ago) link
I can imagine how disorienting it would be to see a car coming at you in your lane, and how it might be just too surreal to react to.

J: That's kind of West Town, but kind of no man's land.
But there's a good restaurant in an old narrow dining car: Silver Palm.

― ‘Neuroscience’ and ‘near death’ pepper (Eazy), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link
(Silver Palm is right at Milwaukee/Chicago/Halsted)
i think of river north as being east of the river (LOL) but i wouldn't know what the area jordan's talking about would be
― congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 9 February 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link
I would probably call it West Town, too.
For restaurants, I'd go just a few blocks west of that intersection, across the highway. There's a decent sushi/Thai place (Butterfly), an Italian deli that's supposed to be excellent (Bari), and a biker-themed burger joint (Twisted Spoke).
Right at Grand/Milwaukee/Halsted, there's a nice Italian place called Piccolo Sogno that I hear is good, although I get the impression people mostly like it for the sprawling enclosed patio in the summer.
― jaymc, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
Actually, this is Milwaukee/Chicago/Ogden. About the same distance as the places I mentioned, but northwest instead of west.

thanks guys. we'll probably just go to victory's banner anyway.

just wanted to tell you thatof those two i have historically preferred "mind" but the other one sounded super best today.

― tanuki, Thursday, 9 February 2012 17:39 (twelve years ago) link
aw thanks amanda! i am happy with those songs too. i've been getting more excited about home recording stuff again recently (using my reel-to-reel 4-track more) and have a few songs and so hopefully someday i'll put out more stuff. trying to get a short album's worth done first. kind of in that same vein of trying to keep the songs and arrangements pretty simple, but maybe a little slower/murkier than those songs. also we're going to jam with ben again in march sometime but dunno if we'll really have anything to record.
i tried to record some ebow drones recently based on your request but my delay/looping pedal, which is central to the process, appears to be busted. hopefully i just need a new adapter for it.
