Yeah, don't mention it to those conservative nuts already in a tizzy over this militant brown-skinned person with visa issues they'd never heard of until Sunday.

otherwise much agreement, need to hear that carioca mix

Basically the deal, I believe, was that Diplo totally jacked DJ Marlboro's beat for the original Bucky Done Gun, more or less - or at least that was the rumour at the time, and the remix was a way to 'rectify' that or whatever.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

apparently "space" is on the last album? i don't remember anything about maya except how bad the bad bits were. my 11th track that got kicked off the final 10 was "hit that".

remembering mia's best songs is a handy way of realising how unexciting her new one is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB4Zy7HJyLs

slays the original (which they nicked off a dj marlboro beat in the first place)

i like that song "Paper Planes"

Number None, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

this is not going to change your mind lex but Maya mostly kills, it's just the three sluggish songs on the middle ("It Takes A Muscle", "ItIz What It Iz", to a lesser degree "Story To Be Told") that make it seem interminable

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 7 February 2012 23:49 (twelve years ago) link

Hmmm, that's cool but I don't think I like it as much as the original. "Bucky" is probably my favorite M.I.A. song, though.

This, except the only one that I find sluggish/interminable is It Iz What It Iz.

impressive fact from her Wiki
She is the only artist in history to be nominated for an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Brit Award, Mercury Prize and Alternative Turner Prize.

piscesx, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

less impressive if anyone else was nominated for all of those except whatever 'alternative tuner' is

some dude, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:35 (twelve years ago) link

U2 has been nominated for all but the "alternative turner prize"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:39 (twelve years ago) link

man if u2 isnt alt enough 4u i dont even know

lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but i'd kind of expect that from the likes of U2 cause they've been around since forever. pretty impressive from someone with a short career like MIA's i'd say.

piscesx, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 05:16 (twelve years ago) link

I s'spect the Alt-Turner Prize is related to the Turner Prize, i.e., an art prize.

jaymc, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 05:30 (twelve years ago) link

Sting has also been nominated for all but the Alt-Turner, btw.

This, except the exact opposite. If DJP and I divided up MAYA it would be the most harmonious settlement ever.

SFJ: M.I.A. SHOULDN’T HAVE APOLOGIZED

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/culture/2012/02/im-sorry-mia-apologized.html?mbid=gnep&google_editors_picks=true

o. nate, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

I love how passionate that SFJ piece is. Being on the blog liberates it from that New Yorkerish sense of distance. It reads like an angry fan: "Fuck you, MIA rules!"

Suede - the fabric, not the band (DL), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

The artist, of course, is M.I.A. About seven years ago, I praised her for several things, including turning the noxious generalization of “world music” into an idea that represents life as it is lived, and affords huge aesthetic possibilities. She made two albums that received all the praise they deserved, and then a third album called “/\/\/\Y/\,” which received a deeply weird and negative review in Pitchfork (unless you think M.I.A. is here only to provide “bangers” and hasn’t already vaulted way past her “potential as a pop artist” many times) and, most damagingly, the worst profile ever written about a musician, in the New York Times Magazine.

except for this one magnetic fields piece i read somewhere once, maybe...

omar little, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:43 (twelve years ago) link

Good article but SFJ is completely off if he thinks M.I.A. did it simply as a performance and not a publicity stunt. If flipping the finger was allowed she would've thought of the next 'offensive' thing to do on live tv. She did it because she knew exactly the reactions it would get.

SFJ OTM RE MIA

great post

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like people have lost the ability to distinguish between "performance" and "publicity stunt." i mean any 'look at me!' gesture by a professional entertainer/celebrity is what it is, you can just choose to look at it in one light or another as part and parcel of what they do or something unnecessary or sinister or calculated.

Alshipleyan Goalpostmover (some dude), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link
