Yeah, its almost as if she might have done something recently to get people to talk about her again.

yeah its almost as if its something completely stupid

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:26 (twelve years ago) link

Of course its stupid, thats what half the posts itt are saying!

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

the super bowl is the biggest musical event in the country, shocking that people would talk about it

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

deej is the guy that walked up to the water cooler at work this morning and was all, "idgi, why are you guys talking about commericals"?

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

eh I agree with deej, this is such a NON-CONTROVERSY it just feels like people are talking about it because they love to argue about & be offended by M.I.A. or whatever. it's so dumb.

like if she showed the world her penis I could understand talking about it.

DO NOT CALL (The Brainwasher), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:30 (twelve years ago) link

If you guys took the time to read the thread, people have mostly been saying that the general public's reaction to this is stupid too. Its not like we've been sitting here all day saying, "OMG that transgressive Maya is soooo punk rock".

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:32 (twelve years ago) link

man, when M.I.A. flipped off the baby Jesus that was soooooooooooo punk rock

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

this is maybe projecting a little bit, but i think people in this thread are dreading the oncoming rush of establishment (and esp right-wing) media going through the news cycle on "who is MIA?" when ilxor-types are like, BDDT

Critique of Pure Moods (goole), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:35 (twelve years ago) link

The whole thing does kind of exemplify mainstream culture's completely batshit schizo relationship with *obscenity*. I mean ffs you have MADONNA and NICKI MINAJ up there and a bunch of dancers doing all kinds of crotch thrusts and whatnot (not to mention homoerotic spartans or w/e that was but at least that's probably too subtle for the kids to pick up on), yet a hand gesture known to the average first grader is what sets people off.

This is America for you. Remember this is a culture that has absolutely no problem with hundreds of hours of crime-show television with graphic depictions of death and torture, but freaks the fuck out at the nearest suggestion of a female nipple.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:44 (twelve years ago) link

It seems like kind of a juvenile stunt, but who knows, maybe it was some kind of commentary on the Super Bowl as an ur-text of American culture. Probably people outside of the US are in a better place to get the joke.

o. nate, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:50 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i kind of feel you guys, but on the other hand, why did she do it? it's a blatantly cynical sales maneuver

like, i'll be the first one to say that 'dont disturb the conservative americans over nothing' is a dumb position when it comes to, like, a nipple or homophobia, where a part of someone's either biological or self-determined identity is being called into question, but this was such a blatant & unnecessary trolljob from an artist it seemed like we'd finally agreed just to ignore

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:52 (twelve years ago) link

ha what are you smoking

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

giving the middle finger at a time and place when it's guaranteed to get a big reaction is really way too simple to dress up as a 'commentary' or even a 'joke'

some dude, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

trolling is intrinsic to her artistic persona

xp

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

hundreds of tumblr essays later about how gender and race and politics enter into a self-aggrandizing troll throwing up the finger, where we all agree fox news is dumb, and the cycle starts all over again blah blah

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

an artist it seemed like we'd finally agreed just to ignore

also sounds like a bunch of us all really liked her last record so what do you mean "we" white man etc

max buzzword (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

hey, if you're going to make an empty gesture futilely grasping at the concept of "rebellion," a madonna performance is the place to do it

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

i was going to say, 'we'll see how funny it is when your tumblr dashboard is overcome w/ people using this event as an excuse to write lazy essays abt ~what this means~ in terms of gender race culture economics & society' & then i realized who i was talking to

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

your first problem is that you have a tumblr dashboard

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 6 February 2012 20:59 (twelve years ago) link

if you HAVE a tumblr dashboard to get offended about that's problem #1 really

if she was trying to be funny/make a point she should have pulled down the front of her shirt but instead of flashing a nip she has a dilbert cartoon taped to her boob

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

idk i just wish the artists we (meaning, those of us in this broad media bubble) chose to spend so much time arguing abt & having firm opinions on were releasing worthwhile music, that MIA track that just came out sounds like a timbo b-side from 2002

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:05 (twelve years ago) link

people in this thread are making me like the fact that she gave the finger

max, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:06 (twelve years ago) link

oh my god n/a

"You know, I really hadn't given too much thought to the bloodshed in Syria until M.I.A. showed her Dilbert-covered boob during the Superbowl halftime show. Now everything has been put in a clearer perspective."

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

Tbh, a timbo b-side from 2002 is better than half of what I hear on the radio in February 2012.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

you have to admit it would have been funnier at least

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:07 (twelve years ago) link

dilbert's hilarious

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:08 (twelve years ago) link

this also happening right in the wake of the 8 millionth lana del rey think piece is also what just makes me think 'here we go again' & just not want to look at the internet for a hundred years

glad i could be of service max. enjoy the ensuing 'controversy'

D-40, Monday, 6 February 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

but you can read dilbert on the internet!

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:09 (twelve years ago) link

Hey deej, you do know you don't actually have to read all 8 million LDR thinkpieces, right? Its pretty easy to ignore if you try!

fwiw the extent of my engagement with Lana Del Rey has been limited to my casual acknolwedgment of her ILM thread's tendency to stay at the top of the New Answers pile.

iow yeah dude it isn't that hard
