Would like to see the first day of that Pain Management class: half S&M-ers who saw it on the Friends & Lovers page, half people who've had terrible surgery and are trying to keep it together.

So, uh, its going to be interesting around here in May, huh?

Hacker group Anonymous is calling for NATO/G8 protesters to barricade Chicago for the whole month of May. Add that to the 50,000 protesters that AdBusters is rallying, and May is going to be... interesting.

Anonymous also hacked into law enforcement websites last week in Salt Lake City, Syracuse, New York, and Boston, plus a justice ministry website in Greece. ABC7 writes:

Police websites in the Chicago area were not affected, but there is reason to suspect the group Anonymous is winding up to sucker-punch Chicago during the G8/NATO summits in May.

On the group's YouTube channel and website is a message for Chicago: An escalation of the protests.

The management company at my building actually forwarded an email from a Chicago business group that is "strongly encouraging" all businesses located in the Loop to have employees work from home throughout the duration of the G8 summit.

from HuffPo:

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce has instructed businesses in the Loop area, particularly those on State Street and North Michigan Avenue, should institute "24-hour security on the street" to help ensure their customers' safety. Where possible, Loop businesses are being told to allow their employees to work from home.

Yep, yep. Verrrry much so.

‘Neuroscience’ and ‘near death’ pepper (Eazy), Monday, 6 February 2012 03:54 (twelve years ago) link

Curious to know who thought scheduling both the G8 and the NATO summits at the same time, in the same city, was ever going to be a good idea.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 04:00 (twelve years ago) link

Dag, I hate working from home.

Jeff, Monday, 6 February 2012 04:02 (twelve years ago) link

This means my work will be a clusterfuck because we in no way have our stuff set up to allow people to work from home. Although maybe I'll be far enough south to not really worry about it.

I can't wait to read about how how you guys are handling your commute on those days.

Yeah that seems to happen way too frequently around here.

Gonjasufjanstephen O'Malley (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 6 February 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

Oh that paragraph about the beer lists rings painfully true.

Don't rely on servers for beer knowledge. Know your game going in. Or have a smartphone.

Jeff, Monday, 6 February 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

I know we are living in a beer wonderland and I love it and it is amazing.

But sometimes I yearn for the days when a fancy beer meant like a sam adams or a bass. lol old

I also am somewhat disgusted by the "rare beer" phenomenon of ludicrously limited barrel aged whatever that costs like $25 for a bomber. Maybe I should start drinking herbal tea instead.

Its not so much the lack of knowledge that bothers me, its when the server disappears for 20 minutes before coming back to tell you that what you wanted isn't on tap right now.

most of that stuff is crap ime, the best beers are meticulously crafted over thousands of batches

long duk dan (dan m), Monday, 6 February 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

I love a lot of those fancy beers BUT, unsurprisingly, I refuse to go to much trouble to try them. If they are on tap somewhere that I like to go, that's fine.

I did stand in line for some Half Acre limited release but that was a gesture of love towards Jeff, not towards the beer.

hey y'all, looking forward to being back in chicago this weekend. staying at my gf's brother's place near milwaukee & halstead.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 6 February 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Don't worry guys, I'll stand in all the rare beer lines for you. Except when I send Jenny.

Jeff, Monday, 6 February 2012 23:22 (twelve years ago) link

And sure rare certainly does not always equal good. But with variations that are released yearly like GI Bourbon County Stout, or Founders Kentucky /Canadian Stout, chances are pretty good that it is phenomenal.

Jeff, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 14:07 (twelve years ago) link

Was it someone in a Chicago thread talking about that Youth Lagoon record? Or am I confusing it with something else? I was walking down Printer's Row from lunch last week and saw the storefront for Hydrogen Plus Records that I'd apparently passed by many times without ever seeing. Anyway, the selection is pretty small and definitely geared only towards whatever Pitchfork is currently hyping, but I did pick up the Youth Lagoon and Pop. 1280 records. Both are really good.

omg! but what does "carl agatha" MEAN? should i not call you "J____" anymore?

It's what I named a character in Rock Band once, kind of after a character in Battlestar Galactica who is super dumb and handsome (Carl Agathon). So it is like a two layer cake of dorkiness. Three layers if you consider it is now an Internet message board handle.

You can still call me Jenny!

carl agatha, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:05 (twelve years ago) link

oh duh! carl agathon is helo!

horseshoe, Tuesday, 7 February 2012 16:10 (twelve years ago) link

I've never seen you as a Carl.

Carl Smithers is a little upset that he won't be the most famous Carl around these parts anymore.

ALSO CAN I BE A SHILL FOR A SECOND and encourage you all to attend the (erotic) FICTION CONTEST held by Jenny-Carl's health organization at which:

* There will be no reiki
* I will make my triumphant return to the stage
* I will loan a book to Dr Advance Johnson
* I might tell you my Mom Samsamuel story but only if there are not too many ppl listening

It is THIS SUNDAY and I vow to BRING IT.
