Shulé Houlihan

Shulé is a stage performer, author, and teacher who as a youth spent seven years backpacking the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and Africa where she muscled an Enfield motorcycle through the Himalayas, learned to meditate under the same Bodhi tree as the Buddha, was kidnapped in Pakistan, faced an angry mob in India, survived a massive flood in Cambodia, and was gang raped in Spain. These mesmerizing stories are the basis for her upcoming book and live presentation “For The Strength of Men: a One Woman Show”.

“Destroy Normal” is the saying Taylor lives by. Here is a brief timeline of Taylor’s life: Age 20 – hired as North America’s youngest professional firefighter. Age 24 – picks up real estate on the side and becomes the highest grossing new agent in the country and joins the top one percentile in North America. Age 27 – removes himself from his business, travels the world, and following a trip to Africa, decides to devote his life to philanthropy and social enterprise. Age 29 – uses his business background to create a system that enables anyone to raise $10,000 for charity in under 3 hours. Age NOW – looking forward to speaking at Awesomeness Fest where (for the first time) he will “tell all” about how to raise $1,000,000 to build over 100 schools in Africa to empower hundreds of thousands of people… in less than a day.

^ lots going on here

At the age of 20, Nick was living the life of a rockstar traveling the world in one of Australia’s most popular bands, Sneaky Sound System. At 26 when his super cute son Leo was born, Nick made the switch to real estate (he did what!) and in 4 short years was awarded the top sales person in Australia with an average sale price of $7M.

i wish i could remember exactly how my former roommate phrased her central Landmark metaphor--something about building a foundation for a house that she used for every real-life situation. Mordy, do you remember anything about this?

Have not heard this metaphor, sorry...

Mordy, Thursday, 2 February 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

lol now i want a comedic series based based on motivational speakers in the style of Party Down

Up In The Air should have been about George Clooney's motivational speaking.

the thing is i think i'm translating her totally incomprehensible metaphor to one that makes more sense to me...it was all about laying foundations for good relationships but the metaphor wasn't of building a house it was something i could never make any sense of and of course i've completely forgotten it. she would just walk around our suite saying so many things and i could understand none of them! it was genuinely scary. i was young, i guess, but it was like invasion of the body snatchers.

Our student media department falls under a certain university division known for and expected to produce motivational twaddle. Before this I worked at a local bookstore whose biggest source of revenue (after travel guides and dictionaries) was New Age campfire fodder.
