2003 appears to be geirs top albums not ilm's. LOL

I love this write up he did for his number ten.
Virtually every genre has sort of the crossover album that mixes the genre with elements from lots of other genre in a really ambitious concept album, and creates a classic. "Speakerbox/The Love Below" is basically to hip-hop was "London Calling" was to punk, "Mellon Collie" was to grunge, "Leftism" was to electronica and "Physical Grafitti" was to heavy rock. A truly ambitious album that is sooo much more than just a hip-hop album. Which is probably why it is the first ever hip-hop album to appear in my year-end Top 10 ;)

still haven't heard ferraro. Is it like James Blake?

I mean, if you're going to go for pastichey throwback music, at least go for the epic Hughesian sweep of M83; no one needed a dude to pastiche the incidental music from "Mannequin"

damn i didn't beat the rollout. sorry j0rdan
I predict that Ferraro cover will comfortably out-ugly everything else that will be posted on this list.

It's an electronic album that sounds like it was made almost entirely from preloaded Microsoft Windows 98 sound effects. Fair play to him for trying it, but good god it's a terrible concept.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link
2007 and 2008 count as rock, I'd say?
― two lights crew (seandalai), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link
the whole thing is a joke about shitty sounds and a 'commentary on our disposable digital culture' or something, right?

none of those albums I'd classify as rock tbh
Hmm. Anyway, is anyone here to defend the Ferraro album?

I just listened to that youtube. So, no.

please post another album so I can stop listening to this fucking horrible James Ferraro album, which comes across like the Lambda Lambda Lambda band from Revenge of the Nerds releasing a sellout album

That Ferraro album sounds cool in theory, but it's pretty boring, IMO.

― I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
that james ferraro track is nowhere near as bad as i thought it'd be - well, i kinda like the piano. but the beat is woefully thin and most of the sounds bring to mind that episode of friends with ross's toy keyboard
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
That James Ferraro totally sounds like KPM library music, Richard Myhill in particular.
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
Perfume sounds like a twee-90s indie band.
i voted perfume

i think triangle was a better album than JPN, both very good x

otm i listened to it 2 times and really have never had the urge to listen to it again, which is strange since 'internet/digital trash' is one of my favorite aesthetics as of late
― ≧^◡^≦ (diamonddave85), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
okay even this super-cloying saccharine overdose that is the Perfume album condensed to snippets over 2 minutes is a million times more enjoyable than that James Ferraro album

more outloud stuff
― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
that Ferraro really is awful. it sounds like a demo album, and a weak one at that.
― skip, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
I thought Ferraro would be somewhere between the retro digital sounds of Ford and Lopatin and the academic avant-pop of William Brittelle, but it wasn't as fun as either.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link
I didn't vote for Ferraro but enjoyed it the couple of times I played it. I found some beautiful moments in amongst the kitchiness of it, baffles me why it evokes such negative feelings. Must be a linux thing.

The highs on JPN are higher imo, not sure which I prefer overall though.

The Outloud room has been brilliant for discovering stuff this year. That is all.

There was a mid90s band from Leicester called Perfume, more like a romantic-Bunnymen than twee. I very much doubt their album has ever placed in any list of albums ever.

YES! Wasn't sure Perfume would place but it did get its own thread on Sandbox with lots of new fans so I was hopeful.
Nakata (producer) is on a scary roll here, every moment filled with melody and crackling sounds you just want to eat up.
Great videos as wellNee: http://youtu.be/W63nzvIoFJUVOICE: http://youtu.be/18grnTXq7mc

I don't think i voted for Perfume in the end. It's a solid 7/10 album with some very lovely moments but it just seems like a bit of a throwback to a 90s J-Pop sound that's a little dated for me.
