have no idea what might be wrong with combining black metal with whatever, even if that whatever is "williamsburg-scene rock". i like cross pollination and hate the purity police almost as much as i hate knee-jerk indie bashing. it seems ridiculous to disparage this band by saying that they sound like what the liars or oneida would sound like if they tried to play black metal, cuz those bands don't play black metal, and if they did, i'm sure it'd be both interesting and distinct from what liturgy are up to. the manifesto is funny. it reminds me of deathspell omega's metaphysical ramblings. deep thoughts of this sort are par for the genre.

if the music doesn't appeal, then that's that. if it does, then all this other crap becomes secondary.

You don' think Eye Contact has any chance to win this?

― monster_xero

Yeah I think that stands a good chance. Pretty sure the top 3 will be PJ Harvey, Beyonce and them. Wouldn't be surprised if the DJ Quik places in top 5 too.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

Meh Kerr I think #3 and esp #4 albums in the metal poll have huge crossover appeal and should do well ~many xps later~

(Finally! This thread is hard to post on!)

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

some of these predictions seem pretty out there to me unless i missed some huge chunks of discussion on here earlier in the year (quite probable)

ciderpress, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

eye contact stands no chance of winning this poll

jabba hands, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

femme fatale

nathey, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not too into the album results this year partly because I already know which two of the albums I voted for will place, and I'm 99% sure the rest will not (especially if none of them placed on the first day). And I did a lot of skimming of the albums nominations, enough that I don't expect to make any discoveries from the poll results.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

On the other hand, I am anxiously waiting for today's results to actually be posted, because it's still some sort of entertainment while I'm waking up.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago) link

I still wouldn't be surprised if Katy B won. top 5 for certain.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

lol no way is Femme Fatale winning, it will be lucky to be top 10

If PJ wins it would be the first ever 'rock' winner of an ILM EOY poll.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

everyone's a winner

two lights crew (seandalai), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure rock stuff has won albums polls before, its the tracks poll it hasn't

ciderpress, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

i know femme fatale won't win :) just throwing support
in a dream world it would be britney at #3 behind saade volume 1 and saade volume 2

nathey, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

PJ Harvey won't win I don't think, but maybe we should save this discussion for Thursday.

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

― ciderpress,

I cant think of one. And people have been saying for years that a rock album hasn't won. We need a thread with all the EOY results on it.

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:43 (twelve years ago) link

there was a poll thread of all the EOY results, i can't find it now though

ciderpress, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:44 (twelve years ago) link

I think PJ is likely to win on points - got a feeling it's the kind of album people either love or quite like, so it's likely to get a high amount of votes in some capacity rather than a few rabid fans.

I was excited about Barbara Panther at first. Great name, interesting story. Her affected Bjork-isms wore me down by track 5 though. Best in small doses. When Saints Go Machine is cool. Bits remind me of Antony, Wild Beasts, Long Fin Killie.

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

most of US ILX didn't seem to care about PJH though

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

Only thing that might stop PJ is will enough americans have heard it/liked it enough but it's ILM so it shouldn't really be a problem.
I can see Beyonce beating it though.

nice one nathey. thanks!

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

the last PJ Harvey record I liked came out in 1993.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:48 (twelve years ago) link

I had no idea PJH wasn't popular in the States. Before LES I'd frequently forget she was English - always stored her in the American/Alternative category in my mind.

2003 appears to be geirs top albums not ilm's. LOL

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:50 (twelve years ago) link

PJH has made a lot of good music since 1993, although Rid of Me is probably always going to be my favorite.

This was #1 in the Wire's EOY under "controversial" circumstances

two lights crew (seandalai), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

Still haven't heard the Ferraro. The Wire's number one album of 2011 btw.

ha xp

I love this write up he did for his number ten.

Virtually every genre has sort of the crossover album that mixes the genre with elements from lots of other genre in a really ambitious concept album, and creates a classic. "Speakerbox/The Love Below" is basically to hip-hop was "London Calling" was to punk, "Mellon Collie" was to grunge, "Leftism" was to electronica and "Physical Grafitti" was to heavy rock. A truly ambitious album that is sooo much more than just a hip-hop album. Which is probably why it is the first ever hip-hop album to appear in my year-end Top 10 ;)

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:55 (twelve years ago) link

still haven't heard ferraro. Is it like James Blake?

I want your nose, your shoes and your unicycle (dog latin), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

I mean, if you're going to go for pastichey throwback music, at least go for the epic Hughesian sweep of M83; no one needed a dude to pastiche the incidental music from "Mannequin"

damn i didn't beat the rollout. sorry j0rdan

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

I predict that Ferraro cover will comfortably out-ugly everything else that will be posted on this list.

Derartu Cthulhu (NickB), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:57 (twelve years ago) link

It's an electronic album that sounds like it was made almost entirely from preloaded Microsoft Windows 98 sound effects. Fair play to him for trying it, but good god it's a terrible concept.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

2007 and 2008 count as rock, I'd say?

two lights crew (seandalai), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:58 (twelve years ago) link

the whole thing is a joke about shitty sounds and a 'commentary on our disposable digital culture' or something, right?

Wow, really surprised how much I like all the previous winners.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:59 (twelve years ago) link
