Good to see all this metal discussion. I have a weird relationship with black metal. Over the past couple decades I've followed the likes of Bathory, Emperor, Meads of Asphodel, Sigh, and especially Enslaved. But it hasn't been my favorite genre lately. I like what Nachtmystium have done recently, and Absu. The Liturgy is pretty good, but I don't think it really surpasses any of the others above. I don't have any problem with Hunter-Hendrix's manifesto. There's a long tradition of artists doing this. I don't think Breton's Surrealist Manifesto took anything away from his art. Artists should be able to defend and articulate their work.

seandalai did a sterling job promoting it but I know how hard it is to get metal punters to vote. A lot of the liturgy voters seem to be posters who did not take part in metal poll. So i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bother voting.
I do think 1 album is a cert and possibly the 2nd. Anything else would shock me.

Britney used to be tagged as black metal. So black metal radio played Britney but Britney/pop radio played black metal.

So next year will there be a Two Lights album in the poll?

I reckon that Tim Hecker will appear in round about the same place as Emeralds and OPN did last year or maybe just a bit higher.

btw i didn't vote in this poll or the tracks one, but apparently like talking about albums way more than singles.

I hope Hecker makes it. Didn't get into my ballot but have since listened a bit more and it deserves to be in this list.

have no idea what might be wrong with combining black metal with whatever, even if that whatever is "williamsburg-scene rock". i like cross pollination and hate the purity police almost as much as i hate knee-jerk indie bashing. it seems ridiculous to disparage this band by saying that they sound like what the liars or oneida would sound like if they tried to play black metal, cuz those bands don't play black metal, and if they did, i'm sure it'd be both interesting and distinct from what liturgy are up to. the manifesto is funny. it reminds me of deathspell omega's metaphysical ramblings. deep thoughts of this sort are par for the genre.

if the music doesn't appeal, then that's that. if it does, then all this other crap becomes secondary.

Yeah I think that stands a good chance. Pretty sure the top 3 will be PJ Harvey, Beyonce and them. Wouldn't be surprised if the DJ Quik places in top 5 too.

Meh Kerr I think #3 and esp #4 albums in the metal poll have huge crossover appeal and should do well ~many xps later~

I'm not too into the album results this year partly because I already know which two of the albums I voted for will place, and I'm 99% sure the rest will not (especially if none of them placed on the first day). And I did a lot of skimming of the albums nominations, enough that I don't expect to make any discoveries from the poll results.

On the other hand, I am anxiously waiting for today's results to actually be posted, because it's still some sort of entertainment while I'm waking up.

I still wouldn't be surprised if Katy B won. top 5 for certain.

I cant think of one. And people have been saying for years that a rock album hasn't won. We need a thread with all the EOY results on it.

I think PJ is likely to win on points - got a feeling it's the kind of album people either love or quite like, so it's likely to get a high amount of votes in some capacity rather than a few rabid fans.

I was excited about Barbara Panther at first. Great name, interesting story. Her affected Bjork-isms wore me down by track 5 though. Best in small doses. When Saints Go Machine is cool. Bits remind me of Antony, Wild Beasts, Long Fin Killie.

most of US ILX didn't seem to care about PJH though

Only thing that might stop PJ is will enough americans have heard it/liked it enough but it's ILM so it shouldn't really be a problem.
I can see Beyonce beating it though.

the last PJ Harvey record I liked came out in 1993.

I had no idea PJH wasn't popular in the States. Before LES I'd frequently forget she was English - always stored her in the American/Alternative category in my mind.

2003 appears to be geirs top albums not ilm's. LOL

PJH has made a lot of good music since 1993, although Rid of Me is probably always going to be my favorite.
