it's disappointing to think that people might check out Liturgy and just stop there thinking that that is what BM is all about.
that would be disappointing if it was happening to any meaningful extent yes

yes, please let's post some new albums. i think i'm starting to protract my argument far beyond where it was meant to go. Liturgy are okay really, just not what I'm looking for.
DD85 - I can only advise on older BM up to about 2004, after that I stopped being so current with it. There are some great rolling threads on ILX and/or the poll which ASR conducted (been dipping in and out of this uncovering a wealth of interesting things). For full on BM blast, you can't go two wrong with Ulver's third album "Nattens Madrigal". I'm a huge Emperor fan, and would recommend their "Best Of" which is called Scattered Ashes. For more experimental stuff, later Ulver albums like the Blood Inside are pretty prog-tastic, as is Arcturus's Sham Mirrors (a personal fave). I have a soft-spot for the Japanese Black/Thrash band Sigh, who are kind of hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

the drummer left Liturgy btw
i know. :(
do they have a new drummer?
― the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Tuesday, January 31, 2012 10:29 AM (28 minutes ago)
they're touring in feb (w/ sleigh bells and diplo lol), curious to see if they'll go back to using a drum machine. I feel for those guys, greg fox is not easily replaced.

Not sure which will be harder to overcome tbh, losing Greg Fox or touring with Sleigh Bells and Diplo.

Good to see all this metal discussion. I have a weird relationship with black metal. Over the past couple decades I've followed the likes of Bathory, Emperor, Meads of Asphodel, Sigh, and especially Enslaved. But it hasn't been my favorite genre lately. I like what Nachtmystium have done recently, and Absu. The Liturgy is pretty good, but I don't think it really surpasses any of the others above. I don't have any problem with Hunter-Hendrix's manifesto. There's a long tradition of artists doing this. I don't think Breton's Surrealist Manifesto took anything away from his art. Artists should be able to defend and articulate their work.
This poll was heavily promoted throughout the metal poll, so expect some more metal!

there's a link to alltime metal albums poll there too which takes you to the needle database and you can look at the 'by-genre' results.

― Fastnbulbous,
seandalai did a sterling job promoting it but I know how hard it is to get metal punters to vote. A lot of the liturgy voters seem to be posters who did not take part in metal poll. So i wouldn't be surprised if they didn't bother voting.I do think 1 album is a cert and possibly the 2nd. Anything else would shock me.

I reckon that Tim Hecker will appear in round about the same place as Emeralds and OPN did last year or maybe just a bit higher.

― emil.y, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 16:31 (twelve years ago) link
have no idea what might be wrong with combining black metal with whatever, even if that whatever is "williamsburg-scene rock". i like cross pollination and hate the purity police almost as much as i hate knee-jerk indie bashing. it seems ridiculous to disparage this band by saying that they sound like what the liars or oneida would sound like if they tried to play black metal, cuz those bands don't play black metal, and if they did, i'm sure it'd be both interesting and distinct from what liturgy are up to. the manifesto is funny. it reminds me of deathspell omega's metaphysical ramblings. deep thoughts of this sort are par for the genre.
if the music doesn't appeal, then that's that. if it does, then all this other crap becomes secondary.

I'm not too into the album results this year partly because I already know which two of the albums I voted for will place, and I'm 99% sure the rest will not (especially if none of them placed on the first day). And I did a lot of skimming of the albums nominations, enough that I don't expect to make any discoveries from the poll results.
