I'd pull a muscle if I tried running to Don Caballero. I can see myself running to The Biz and Nassau by The Sea And Cake. I've never listened to music while running though.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 28 March 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

i went to the gym this morning and listened to the 12"/80s compilation on shuffle. it wasn't an unqualified success, i must admit. props, in a gym stylee, to spandau ballet and stephen "tin tin" duffy. a zillions boos for talk talk and grace jones.

For a little while there I was running to Tago Mago and the Swell Maps.

Lately it's been De La Soul, Sonic Youth or M.I.A.

You can search a large database of songs for those that exactly match your personal running pace at http://www.bestworkoutmusic.com - this way you can create a playlist of all the songs you like where all the tracks also match the tempo of your running pace.

Lately I've been rocking Neu! 2 for my morning bicycle commute. Easy to settle into a nice rhythm.

Does anybody else find themselves breathing in and out to the beat? I can ignore the beat when timing my steps, but unconciously breath along with the beat.

splates (splates), Monday, 14 November 2005 07:50 (eighteen years ago) link

yep i always do that too. that's why i tend to and pick electronic music that is pretty uptempo but not overly so.

OTM. Just got a bunch of Slayer cassettes on ebay. I was getting sick of Appetite For Destruction and OK Computer (ipod has been broken for years, have no desire for new one).

Andi Mags, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link

Andrew WK has to be the best exercise music ever.

Richard Wood Johnson, Thursday, 2 August 2007 19:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I think Slayer is tough to work out to, and I love the band. They are way too fast for my slovenly pace, I try to keep up with the beat, and end up getting exhausted.

I loaded some Queen on to my Ipod for the gym, it's surprisingly excellent workout music.

i hate listening to music when i run or work out because when i inevitably push myself too hard and feel like i'm gonna vom there is nothing i want less than a bunch of bullshitty noise in my ear

Went running for first time ever yesterday. Had my 2010 playlist on. Four Tet, Pawel, Pantha Du Prince, all great to run to. Owen Pallett, not so much.

Aural Exciters "Marathon Runner" is my favourite track *about* running (though see also Fugazi "Long Distance Runner").

I always run outdoors so I don't listen to music, too risky.

seandalai, Sunday, 4 April 2010 21:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Congrats Nick, that is awesome. Hope you keep running, it's as much a force in my life as music these days.

Oh, and join the party: ILX running running thread

Running has hurt me. Went twice in 36 hours after having done nothing for a long time, exercise-wise. I shall run again tomorrow though, if I recover as hoped.

Depeche Mode - Behind The Wheel (the original, not the crappy single remix)
Iron Maiden - Wrathchild

If you want an album, try Confessions... by Madonna.

BUMP

I'm digging long jazzy/folky funk jams that build in intensity, the kind of stuff that was fashionable when "acid jazz" was big in the 90's

Terry Callier - Candy Man
Isaac Hayes - Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic
Grant Green - Sookie Sookie

Brio2, Thursday, 28 August 2014 13:16 (nine years ago) link

nobody?

Ty Segall's Slaughterhouse (minus that Fuzz War feedback track) has been amazingly motivating the last couple of days for me. Newish Fucked Up record not so much.

Brio2, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 14:47 (nine years ago) link

For me at the moment it's mostly ambient or quiet stuff that i can just drift along with, but i had an amazing run recently listening to Current 93's All The Pretty Little Horses on repeat through some spooky old wooded countryside in Berkshire in the early morning mist and a subsequent biblical rainstorm

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 15:39 (nine years ago) link

I hate running, but I like Miles Davis "Big Fun" for cardio.
I have the reissue with the bonus tracks from the Bitches Brew sessions. "Recollections" is crucial.

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 23:15 (nine years ago) link

huh funny you mention Miles. I did an On The Corner run (the two 20 minute tracks) recently. Took a bit to let myself just roll with it, but was feeling good by the end. Jack Johnson is a great idea.

Brio2, Thursday, 4 September 2014 15:43 (nine years ago) link

I threw on Big Fun on runs last night and this morning. Really good call. Especially for running through Brooklyn & Manhattan at night.
I can see myself disappearing into an electric Miles rabbit hole for working out for a few weeks.
The last really aggressive run I did was soundtracked by Plastikman.
My other two favorites are Husker Du - Zen Arcade & Deafheaven - Sunbather. Both close to perfect length to run from my place to my girlfriends.

Almost any Fela record. I figure of he and his band can keep up the jams for 20+ minutes at a time I can easily keep moving too.
