Rick Astley came up in conversation at a friends yesterday, now this thread. Far from thinking he was black, after hearing 'Together, Forever' I thought he was a woman.

Those two famous songs suck.

Sasha (sgh), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 23:44 (nineteen years ago) link

at the next FAP ask me to do my Rick Astley impression!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:52 (nineteen years ago) link

!!

Genius. Are we going to try for a Dizzee/Streets FAP?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Astley is the end of the empire. Glorious.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 3 June 2004 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

one year passes...
never gonna give you up
never gonna let you down
never gonna run around
& desert you!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 12 August 2005 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh hell, I'll defend Cry For Help.

PappaWheelie II, Friday, 12 August 2005 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

That was alright. I'll vouch for the forgotten "It Would Take A Strong, Strong Man" and "She Wants To Dance With Me."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:50 (eighteen years ago) link

His delivery on the chorus of "Strong, Strong Man" approaches Bolton-like levels of earnestness and need...

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:43 (eighteen years ago) link

More like Rick Asslick!

Mark (MarkR), Friday, 12 August 2005 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

ok, i do like "never gonna give you up" -- always have, and still do.

mr. astley still looks like a prat, though!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 13 August 2005 06:02 (eighteen years ago) link

'together forever' was what came out of my casio keyboard when you pressed the demo button

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Saturday, 13 August 2005 12:03 (eighteen years ago) link

So yeah.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

His version of "Vincent" was not as good as the original.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I heard "She Wants to Dance With Me" a few weeks ago at the market.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 15 March 2007 14:45 (seventeen years ago) link

My favorite thing about this song is that The Timelords use it as an example of the ultimate pop song in their Guide To Having A Number One Hit The Easy Way.

Basically, the genius of the song is that it condenses what every woman in the world wants to hear a man say in like 25 syllables.

Display Name, Thursday, 15 March 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the fact that he started out as a teaboy in the PWL studios and was allowed to sing on the Ferry Aid record "to gain work experience." These days he'd have to go on The X-Factor.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 08:55 (seventeen years ago) link

"Whenever You're Ready" was OK, but I still don't see anything essential about him.

The creative highlight of the PWL era was "Showing Out" by Mel & Kim.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Astley was the master of the both-feet-nailed-to-the-floor style of dancing.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:33 (seventeen years ago) link

So true.

The other dancers in his videos made up for it. That bartender - shazam! When he was polishing those glasses and the beat infected him, who knew he had that kind of stuff up his sleeve?

I now ache to create a mixtape with Rick Astley on one side and Swing Out Sister on the other. If those two ever went on tour together it would be HUGE.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 11:55 (seventeen years ago) link

They might just about fill the front row.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:10 (seventeen years ago) link

WITH FECKLESS ASPIRATIONAL JOY.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 12:52 (seventeen years ago) link

With forty-year-old nostalgics from High Wycombe.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I truly can not even conceive of what Rick Astley looks like at age 40. The idea is like the exact marker and limit of my imagination, the vanishing point of my speculative powers.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 March 2007 13:54 (seventeen years ago) link

aside from the hair, he hasn't changed at all

Fetchboy, Friday, 16 March 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow! Strip away the SAW MIDI production and this becomes a disco classic!!!

Astley looks and sounds great. Bonus points for throwing in "Together Forever" and "I Should Be So Lucky" (which is an obvious nod to the Astley-is-Minogue-is-Astley rumours) at the end.

Tantrum The Cat, Friday, 16 March 2007 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

A couple years ago I gave my (composition major) friend a Rick Astley compilation for her birthday after she confessed her undying love for his music. She said she used to rock out in her room to his songs. Since then, I have been trying to imagine what it would mean to rock out to Rick Astley.

calstars, Monday, 21 August 2017 03:04 (six years ago) link

This is a win-win for everybody imo.

Grohl isn't precious about "Teen Spirit."
Astley loves fucking with his own image.
The crowd loves it unironically.

Ugh. I always fall for these!

cajunsunday, Friday, 19 February 2021 21:49 (three years ago) link

can someone explain how the fuck this is done

frogbs, Friday, 19 February 2021 21:56 (three years ago) link

like a Korean sweatshop drawing all the frames inbetween the key poses sent by The Simpsons animators, a computer reads all the digitised frames of the video, and then "draws" extra frames in between all of them

in order to make it look dogshit

stilt in the wings (sic), Friday, 19 February 2021 22:01 (three years ago) link

I mean obviously I know this video but I don't believe I've ever really watched this video until now, with all of attention focused in its direction and with the music turned off and just really intently observing what transpires on the screen. It's really, really fucking funny, pretty much all the way through.

The Mandolinrainian (Old Lunch), Friday, 19 February 2021 22:43 (three years ago) link

Yeah same, never watched it before. I liked it! I thought the crystal clear remaster worked well for the bright, clean aesthetic of the video, too.

lukas, Friday, 19 February 2021 22:47 (three years ago) link

:( killfiled by lukas

stilt in the wings (sic), Friday, 19 February 2021 22:59 (three years ago) link

(ie it's not a remaster; no problem with anybody enjoying the look of this computer animation!)

((sneaks into lukas' house and switches the motion smoothing off his tv))

I beg your pardon. I was just too lazy to coin a new term for "remaster faked by algorithmic detail enhancement, noise reduction and frame interpolation".
