The Very Best of Dionne Warwick

This is the compilation I have, one that came out in the mid-'70s on Polydor; I count it as one of my 10 favourite albums.

Same flaw--no "Then Came You." Anyway, "Walk On By" will probably win, but not necessarily. There's just so much there.

I'm a big fan of her late 70s/early 80s period too. Sad it's not covered here. Even so, tough to narrow this list down to one favorite. She's amazing.

I love Dionne Warwick! I voted "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" because it was stuck in my head for like 6 weeks.

I don't think it will get many votes but I always loved the theme for the Valley of the Dolls so that was my choice.

The first four are a flawless pop sequence; if I had to, I'd choose "Don't Make Mover." Then "Then Came You," the pinnacle of machine-tooled seventies R&B.

"Walk On By" was my default Bacharach/David/Warwick classic for years, but I may vote "Don't Make Me Over" or "Anyone Who Had a Heart" here.

I'll vote for one of the three big late-'60s hits ("Say a Little Prayer"/"San Jose"/"Never Fall in Love Again"), but I'm not sure which. I do think Aretha's "Say a Little Prayer" is even better.

The Love Machine's maybe my favourite awful movie ever. It was out of circulation for a long time, but I see it's available again. Must buy! I can hear Dionne's voice in my head: "That Robin Stone..."

Then Came You is a half-hour sitcom that aired on ABC for two months from March 22, 2000 to April 26, 2000.

I pay too much mind to things like the Rock and Roll HOF, but again, I find it puzzling that Warwick isn't in there. Not because she's someone who's great and has been overlooked--that applies to numerous people. It's more that she just seems to fit a certain type from the early/mid-'60s who does get inducted so well. Gene Pitney's in there, Dusty Springfield, the Ronettes, the Shirelles, Del Shannon...they're all great, but I don't know on what basis they're in and Dionne Warwick isn't. I guess she's more "pop" than them, but I don't know, is that really the reason? I don't get it.

The three people who sang it with her are all in...moot point with two of them, but to me, Dionne Warwick before Gladys Knight easily.

I'm sure she'll get inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF eventually. They usually round out the list with a couple of names they bypassed other years. This year it's Laura Nyro's turn.

She exudes a tacky supper-club vibe, always has; she evokes pre-rock "values." It's easier for the R&R gerontocracy to keep her luminous performances without thinking about her much.

I was just about to post that Bacharach link myself. I just automatically assumed he was in. That's insane.

i don't think bacharach/david/warwick had much to do with rock n roll really -- and they'd probably agree, right? not a bad thing. i mean, i don't really care, the hall is pretty dumb.

I don't really care about the Hall either but it doesn't make sense that they'd induct Dusty Springfield and not Warwick.

It's a whole separate thread, but you have to approach the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame in terms of the audience, not so much the music itself--something is rock and roll simply by virtue of it being listened to by the rock and roll audience, the people who listened to the radio and bought records, and in the '60s, that was as true of Dionne Warwick as anybody else. Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, James Taylor, and lots of other people who don't play rock and roll are in the HOF.

Tough decision. I voted for Walk on By, but I think Do You Know the Way to San Jose doesn't get nearly as much love as it deserves. I Say A Little Prayer was also a contender. That's one of those songs I can actually say I have loved for most of my life, going back to when it was still new. Another favorite of mine, missing from this list: You'll Never Get to Heaven if you Break My Heart.

I decided to consider "Then Came You" a Spinners song, too, so I wouldn't have to consider it for this poll. (I just caught part of it on my lunch break, incidentally.)

Anyway, the Dionne Warwick Collection gives a slightly more generous serving of her songs.

Walk on By might be my favorite Bacharach tune as well, though I'd probably be hesitant to say that if I went and looked at a decent list of his hits.

Not in the Rock Hall and never been nominated either. My guess is her late 70's/80's Adult Contemporary stuff has hurt her with the nominating committee. But, as someone posted above, yes she should be in. Oh, and Burt Bacharach isn't in there as a songwriter either.

But Warwick inhabits "Walk On By" with her immensely tense coo on the chorus, dignified tears with sisters to back her up, "don't stop".

Neil Tennant admitted in a recent podcast that Cilla Black's "Alfie" is his favorite song.

yeah I love her diction on "without true love we just exist"; she gives an absurd line enough, er, properness (is that a word? I want to say propiety but that's not a word) that I buy it.

My desert island Dionne has long been Rhino's Anthology (1962-1969) which includes "This Empty Place" (aka "Sprint [And Then Honky-Tonky] On By"), "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)," "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself," "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," "The April Fools," and my favorite "A House is Not a Home." Nothing in all of jazz has made me suck in gales of air and sent tingles throughout my body as much as the second-to-last sax note in "A House is Not a Home." Give or take a choice slice of DeBarge or Chic, it's my all-time favorite music moment. Absent that, I'm going with "Yo! You There (With Another Girl)?"

And I mean desert island. Nothing evokes the sturm und drang of suburbia for gay boys better than Dionne. She makes shag carpeting and oil rain lamps feel like a Maria Montez Dance of Death. On a strictly greatest hits level, I prefer her to Dusty, Aretha, even The Shirelles (barely).

That Rhino set is ace. I've got the other version alluded to in that review. And both miss some later obscure gems like "Odds & Ends", "Paper Mache" and "Check-Out Time", which are on Rhino's great Bacharach box.

Hi everybody I would literally saw off my own head for Dionne Warwick

(but I'm exhausted right now and probably can't go into anything particularly worth reading about why she's so quietly iconic, how completely her work hits that axis where craft and feeling collide in the listener and find full expression there i.e. how she is perfect at pop music. I voted "Then Came You" for personal reasons; "I never knew love before. Then came you" devastates me every time I hear it. I think Dionne's as good as Diana Ross, which for me is like saying "she's as good as it gets.")

god, i fucking adore "move me no mountain" and "we'll burn our bridges behind us" but early 70s dionne is heavily underrepresented here so i guess i'll vote "then came you" by default
