as far as i can tell he wrote the track although he has a few that sound exactly like that one^ bar the lyrics.

Single version (of the SoP track) >>>>>>>>> album version.

Seriously does anyone rate the album version? It's like the single version emaciated. They start off the same but after the first minute the album version does the re-rewind thing and then... nothing, except the main horn theme and the bassline. No organ counterpart, no guitar, no lunatic scatting, and no spiralling drum fill. Never really listened to the album before so it was a weird (though easily rectified) disappointment when it came up on spotify discover.

god, i used to listen to this on a loop. yes, the lp version is denuded of everything that makes the single version so triumphant and messed up.

fuck why did you have bring up wilmot.

I like the album version and think it fits better - the single version would be too jarring in the context of the rest of the album, though its one of the weaker tracks on there
This album holds up really well for me, particularly the last few tracks

I see your point. Don't know what to do if I play the album again - which I probably will. Might have to skip it and have a separate Wilmot moment another time.
Credible hypothesis: 'Theme' is responsible for the rise of Mark Ronson and his ilk?

Wilmoth Houdini's Uncle Jo' Gimme Mo (cf. vahid upthread) uses the same melody but the trumpet sample (or recreation of) comes from his Black but Sweet:

I leave it to someone else to determine how many other of his songs use the melody.
