There used to be a fantastic used vinyl store in the same shopping center as Cat's on Kingston Pike but I dunno what happened to it. I got the Human League Fascination 12" and Bill Withers and a red Michael Jackson Thriller 7" there.

i was unimpressed by the big record store (forgot the name) on chapman. lost and found records had some good country vinyl, otherwise not so great. knoxville is a bad records town. i did have a nice time at the pilot light.

amateurist, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 11:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Disc Exchange, probably. Yeah it's hit and miss for sure.

i went to king tut's. i wasn't super into the guy's schtick, but the food was fine. i was pretty peeved by the bill though-- $38 (incl. tax) for a greek salad and the sampler. rip off.

roxymuzak, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Is that the former Miller's department store?

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't speak for Doc Cas but I believe it is. Also: MOD BURGER!

roxymuzak, Sunday, 18 January 2009 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

According to this it was a Rich's:

http://www.swankpad.org/places/knoxvilletan/richs/richs.htm

...but I imagine it's worn a few hats. And yes, fabulously red bricks! I'm a sucker for saturated-color glazed bricks, as a rule.

Your link reminds me that I love the Medical Arts Building -- it is one of my fasvorite buildings in the world.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 28 January 2009 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Big haws re: Tracer's headline, and HUGE HAWS that we made it onto that list and the Royal Bangs didn't! Exactly zero bands I voted for made it.

roxymuzak, Thursday, 29 January 2009 06:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i declined to vote because wtf do i know. i like most of the people on the list, but also some who arent and anyway i probably would have put the everly brothers #1...

Yeah, and for some reason I'm kinda proud that the V-Roys beat Superdrag.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:49 (fifteen years ago) link

tryin remember this goth metal band that played at China King, they had a huge black guy named Tauhid as their bass plaer

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 29 January 2009 14:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok, so firstly: huge haws to bands playing at CHINA KING?!

And secondly: I got my apartment today, and it is literally a stone's throw from Chandler's. Chandler's is my neighbor, basically. I am going to be the fattest human alive!

roxymuzak, Friday, 30 January 2009 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Terry Hill is/was a fuckin' hero, by the way.

roxymuzak, Friday, 30 January 2009 22:41 (fifteen years ago) link

dude!! China King was ground zero for punk and metal in the mid-to-late 80s - they used to have handwritten signs on the inside saying "no slamdancing"!

the thought that anyone would actually EAT anything there was inconceivable and hilarious to me

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 31 January 2009 10:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Yesterday, at Market Square, a fellow on a unicycle rode by, holding a solved Rubik's Cube, and said to me "I solved it!" (My reply: "Good job!")

Haha...I remember Hypertribe (attending my first club show ever back in '91, when they opened for fIREHOSE)...they were kinda Faith No More-esque but more metal, right?

ernestp, Saturday, 31 January 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link
