Today's conversation inspired a new display name.

Burritos are one of the things I'm nostalgic about!!! (Eazy), Friday, 27 January 2012 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

Thank you. That makes my abject restaurant recommendation failure a little easier to handle.

Do any of you dykes want to meet me for a burger or pancake and a beer? I want company out amongst people.

Je55e, Saturday, 28 January 2012 00:44 (twelve years ago) link

I think I'll never get used to the fact that "amongst" is not a real word! Or at least not the accepted American spelling. I really hope it doesn't sound like a Brit affectation b/c it completely is not.

Yeah, class starts tomorrow at 9 and I have to be there early because I have to get keys and get somebody to show me how to use the fancy computer projector set up. So I'm in tonight.

I was thinking about going out to find food and/or watching a movie, but wound up getting verrrry sleepy and having a K8-E Balticburger style episode of narcolepsy on my couch at about 7:45.

Pretty bummed about missing Winter Brew :(

Finally figured out how to check e-books out of the library and all of my hold books say something like:

You are patron 13 out of 18 on the waiting list.
Library copies owned: 2

I really don't understand this manufactured scarcity with lending e-books. If something is apparently that popular, surely its fairly easy to license another copy to satisfy demand? Maybe I just don't understand enough about how this works from the library's end. I tried to check out some e-books from the Evanston library, but I quickly gave up. I think I'm still on the waiting list for one book three months later.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 January 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago) link

I don't get how it could be harder to get e-books than physical books. When I checked out the complete poems of Anne Sexton a couple of weeks ago, there was a whole shelf of the same exact book. Probably 15 copies. (Which reminds me, I should renew that check-out online. I love that you can do that.)

L.L., per our Outloud conversation the other evening, let me know if you're still interested in getting some Frank's APA sample mailings!

"I remembered" <-- this is one of those lame phrases they put on those little ribbons for losers, like "I did my best!" and "A+ attitude!"

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't get it! I just checked again to see if I overlooked it, but I didn't get it at all.

again, this is partially because the default check-out period is 3 weeks and because there's no real incentive to return an ebook before that 3 weeks is up (because there are no late fees) and it's not really clear you can even do so. so almost everyone who checks out an ebook will have it for 3 weeks, so the lists pile up.

I really don't understand this manufactured scarcity with lending e-books. If something is apparently that popular, surely its fairly easy to license another copy to satisfy demand? Maybe I just don't understand enough about how this works from the library's end.

i don't know for sure but my guess is that the budget for e-books at most libraries is still relatively small compared to hard copy books because it's still a new/unproven market. so they might not have enough $$$ to buy like 10 "copies" of a given e-book. there is also just general weirdness in the publishing/licensing/borrowing around e-books at this point so it could be something more arcane. libraries are very interested in tracking interest in various books and trying to meet that interest so i doubt the issue is really a library just not buying enough copies because of ignorance.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, a lot of it is just that the explosion in ebooks has happened really quickly and libraries haven't caught up with events yet. Like, our ebook usage has skyrocketed even very recently, since so many people got ereaders for Christmas. And a lot of people (myself included) are loathe to cut print book budget to pay for ebooks, but I guess it will come to that soon.

Also, buying ebooks is kind of complicated -- you have to go through a separate vendor and most libraries in the area (not including CPL obv) are part of a larger consortium for ebooks too.

Also, basically all option for buying ebooks for libraries suck, so it's hard to get too excited about any of it. Some new vendors are getting into it, so maybe it will get better.

I'm talking only about public libraries FYI, I don't know about academic/special though I'm sure n/a does

I chipped a tooth on the buttbone (askance johnson), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:31 (twelve years ago) link

my boss asked me to look into it for our library, even though it's pretty out-of-character for us and not really in line with our policies, and dealing with overdrive for a collection of our size would be prohibitively expensive, and they're kind of the only kid on the block at this point.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks guys, that is helpful to hear. I just always assumed it would be quciker and "easier" to get a new digital copy than a physical copy, but it makes sense to hear how the different budgets are tied into it.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 January 2012 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

Baker and Taylor have a new ebook product out that sounds interesting, though I think it would be just as expensive as overdrive. 3M has one coming soon too.

xp

Also making me uneasy: woman on train this morning with cartload of bottles filled with what appeared to be urine.

The other day I saw a guy walking across the intersection of Clark and Foster pushing three cases of PBR that were resting comfortably in his wheelchair.

Not really. PBR is ok.
