Yeah, I was a little disappointed with that aspect of Kuma's when I finally went there, but the delicious food helped me get over it.

What rules does Kumas have?
― Jeff, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link
That said, we do have some rules we’d appreciate you abide by: 1) We do not take reservations. 2) We will not “put on the game, bro” 3) No music requests. 4) No Minors after 10pm. 5) Our kitchen is only 16×6. Please be patient. And during patio season (summer): 1) Patio opens when we open it. 2) To go service ends during patio season. Or when the patio is running. Whether it is sooner or later than the dates posted. 3) Patio is open when weather permits. 4) Patio closes Monday- Saturday at 10:30pm. Sundays at 9:00pm. 5) Kitchen is still only 16×6. Please be even more patient.
Nowhere near as off-putting as those Vortex ones though.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link
At least Kuma's used "please". Vortex was like one notch short of, "if you don't like it, fuck off".
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link
those are all pretty reasonable imo

ugh the 'bar etiquette' rules on that vortex site are the worst

i am not reading that because i am never ever going there
― La Lechera, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:14 (twelve years ago) link
When I first googled it, the pictures popped up on the menu and it didn't exactly strike me as the type of place that someone in this thread would recommend.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:16 (twelve years ago) link
Kumas rules seem reasonable, even appreciated. I didn't even read the rules at Vortex. But it's weird they're 18 and up all the time. It seemed a little douchey in a "cool" way. The thrift clothes/head shop next door had a handwritten pro-Ron Paul sign outside.
I'm at the airport now and there's a lawyer getting very mad about law stuff on his cell. Someone's lawyer recused the judge.

I'm down with the 'victimized' explanation -- seems as if some real assholes have been in there before
coupled, of course, with owner assholism
― long duk dan (dan m), Friday, 27 January 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link
nope, on further perusal, just owner assholism
place reminds me of THE ALLEY too for some reason
― long duk dan (dan m), Friday, 27 January 2012 19:20 (twelve years ago) link
Wow, I googled vortex to check out their rules, and I'm fairly certain that it's where I spent New Year's Eve 1999 with my sister. WTF.

actually it was New Year's Eve 1998.xp
(not your sister aj)
Ha ha I was going to compare it to The Alley but I feel bad for Jenny, everyone piling on her restaurant recommendation. It was fine, it really was.
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 27 January 2012 19:24 (twelve years ago) link
I don't recall ever going into the Vortex. Seems like I would have at some point.
― Jeff, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:25 (twelve years ago) link
Fyi that La Cocina on Jackson is gone. The John Marshall is taking over all that space. In line at Chipotle now. :/

La Cochina Mexicana.
― Je55e, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:57 (twelve years ago) link
It's okay! It was one of three places and it sounds like you tried EAYC first, which is significantly less douchey. I mean, the Vortex has a skull door and that's cool but yeah, either it wasn't that shitty when I lived there or I didn't remember it well enough. Like I said, it wasn't my regular bar.
― gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Friday, 27 January 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link
EAYC looked nice for a drink but they didn't have much on their food menu.

I think I'll never get used to the fact that "amongst" is not a real word! Or at least not the accepted American spelling. I really hope it doesn't sound like a Brit affectation b/c it completely is not.

I was thinking about going out to find food and/or watching a movie, but wound up getting verrrry sleepy and having a K8-E Balticburger style episode of narcolepsy on my couch at about 7:45.
Pretty bummed about missing Winter Brew :(

Finally figured out how to check e-books out of the library and all of my hold books say something like:
You are patron 13 out of 18 on the waiting list.Library copies owned: 2

― gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Monday, 30 January 2012 13:38 (twelve years ago) link
I really don't understand this manufactured scarcity with lending e-books. If something is apparently that popular, surely its fairly easy to license another copy to satisfy demand? Maybe I just don't understand enough about how this works from the library's end. I tried to check out some e-books from the Evanston library, but I quickly gave up. I think I'm still on the waiting list for one book three months later.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 30 January 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago) link
I don't get how it could be harder to get e-books than physical books. When I checked out the complete poems of Anne Sexton a couple of weeks ago, there was a whole shelf of the same exact book. Probably 15 copies. (Which reminds me, I should renew that check-out online. I love that you can do that.)
