Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 26 January 2012 02:04 (twelve years ago) link

if you are going to stan for a b-side, it's 'no ordinary love'

dayo, Thursday, 26 January 2012 02:09 (twelve years ago) link

love that joint, but there are better DDM songs. best is prob up in the air between "ass on the floor" and "sade"

ass up in the air on the floor

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Thursday, 26 January 2012 02:53 (twelve years ago) link

think the second half of "strobe lights" might be my favorite part of this album

i've been gorging on the entire thing again recently... so totally brilliant

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

also kevin needs to gtfo pretending like "shades" isn't a totally defensible pick for best song on the album -- the vocals on the hook are so crazily good

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:41 (twelve years ago) link

if 'shades' is your favorite song on the album then you're doing DDM wrong imo

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:48 (twelve years ago) link

it's not my #1 favourite but it's arguably the album's centrepiece and the song that most encapsulates LTTP and its themes!

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 20:49 (twelve years ago) link

mayyybe thematically, i mean who cares tho, and sonically it's more an outlier than pretty much everything else other than "change"!

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:01 (twelve years ago) link

I'd be satisfied if the album was all "Shades" and "Ass on the Floor."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

this album rules

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago) link

don't know how you can say preferring "shades" is doing ddm wrong because each track is like a totally different exploration of mood. liking a ddm song is doing ddm right

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

unless it's the one with Chris Brown

I spend a lot of time thinking about apricots (DJP), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:29 (twelve years ago) link

loving this record as much as i do is tough because chris brown

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:36 (twelve years ago) link

Skylar Grey gives Chris Brown some competition.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:39 (twelve years ago) link

skylar grey works very well on "coming home"

luckily the chris brown songs aren't very good in any case

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

you and perry are literally the only people who post on this board who think that

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

who -- me?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

no, what lex said

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

dudes, come on, "i know" is really beautiful

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

i'm gonna call bullshit on my own argument just on principle - i remember a couple years ago sarge said the same thing to me when i said the "love vs money"s were my least favorite songs on that dream album - but to me the DDM album is just a joyride of bright, energetic, percussive bangers and i always resent how "shades" fucks up the flow for me

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago) link

i haven't seen anyone, anywhere rave about how amazing "yesterday" is, because it's not

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:52 (twelve years ago) link

i like "yesterday" just wish anyone else were singing it

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

"shades" is far from the only slow, woozy, depressive moment on LTTP - "angels", "strobe lights", "loving you no more"...and they're as integral to it as the bangers

i mean even "hate you now" and "looking for love" are basically massively dark and paranoid

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

like i really enjoy "yesterday"'s structure, how this simple melody just collects intensity. the ending of the song is really cool too but i guess that holds for every song on this awesome record

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 21:57 (twelve years ago) link

I like DDM as much for the lush, sumptuous stuff as much as the bangers and "Shades" is maybe the apotheosis of that.

And Brad otm about "Yesterday"

lag∞n affiliated (The Reverend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

tbf k3v is the only one crazy enough to dislike 'shades'

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

I really like "Yesterday" though it's not in the top tier of songs on the album - the only problem with it is knowing it's Chris Brown.

I want to hate on CB as much as the next person and heaps of his stuff in the past two years has been awful but I remain impressed at whatever internal molecular adjustment so many of you have accomplished whereby you now appear to have a physical reaction to his mere presence on a song.

I mean, if "Yesterday" was my favourite song I'd feel a bit weird promoting it for the same reason, but nor do I automatically vomit in my mouth every time I hear the same vocalist who I loved on "Forever" and "With You" and "Superhuman" and "Run It" and "Yo" and...

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

Also "Shades" is awesome, probably my second favourite song on the actual album, though it was a bittersweet moment when I realised it's the DDM track most successful at converting the "watching a party through smoke" crowd.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

i don't even dislike 'shades' i just feel like ppl are overenthusiastic about it, like half the song is timberlake's dumb grocerybagging which you all like ironically

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

there's something smarmy about CB's vocal tone that was ignorable before, maybe even suited the songs, but which is just insufferable now. i don't thin he was ever what i loved most about his big hits.

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

i genuinely enjoy timberlake's grocery bagging

first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

"yesterday" is probably my third- or fourth favorite song, i actually think CB's voice suits it very well

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

lol xp

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

hating timberlake's grocery bagging is 1) homophobic (jk) 2) taking things too seriously. the song is just fun

#YOLO #NAMASTE (D-40), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

this isn't true at all... sonically it fits w/ a lot of stuff on the album, layers of synths and vocals, you're being crazy

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

i think chris brown is great on this album... i mean there are places where his wounded, fragile singing voice really does not work, and there are places where it's totally perfect, and i think on this album it's pretty close to the latter

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

if there's anything that breaks up the flow of the album it's "angels", which i love, but "hate you now", "shades" and "your love" all use similar tricks and then in the middle is this hollowed out track w/ a biggie verse

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

one of the great strengths of this album that i picked up on more w/ some distance is how seamlessly so many major stars are folded into the album... it's not so much that they disappear but it's almost at times if like the entire black pop music community has come together to express its heartache at once

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

^^^ said that in my review. The thing is like an updated Motown revue.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

Also, Timberlake is the last thing I remember about "Shades." What lingers is the insinuating, slinky groove and mood.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

also

what you gonna do
what you gonna do when i'm perfect for you
girl watch how it's gonna drive you crazy
and love's gonna turn you up baby
girl watch how it's gonna drive you crazy

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
WHAT YOU GONNA DO WHEN I'M PERFECT FOR YOU

etc.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

^^^ that's the best part of "Shades", & the way it transitions into the Timberlake part

Euler, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:50 (twelve years ago) link

to me its the vocals on the chorus... or whichever part it is where they sing "whatchu gonna do when i'm perfect for you?"... the vocals on that are great, the way they're layered so thick, it plays perfectly with the "hate you now" and "your love"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

Last slew of posts have all been very much OTM.

Tim F, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

I'll spend the rest of my life defending this album to skeptics.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago) link

i might be totally wrong about this, but it sounds to me like the harmonies on the chorus are layered in a way that is slightly out of sync, which has this great, disorienting effect.

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 23:02 (twelve years ago) link

i assume it's bilal & fauntelroy doing those parts?
