The Doug Sahm page on FB is reporting that Sahm/SDQ's longtime drummer Johnny Perez has died.

there was a bit in the recent Paul Nelson anthology about Sahm -- Nelson talks about how Sahm was one of the greatest talents he ever encountered, but that Sahm's attention span was so short that he could never create the masterpiece that (Nelson believed) he had in him. also he smoked a lot of weed.

Has somebody reissued Mendocino, I have it on Arcadia but I think that label ceased to be a while back.
If anybody has done as good a job with it it is pretty essential if you're into this type of music.

Seems it would a be a no-brainer for Sundazed to do on vinyl at least. It is completely oop (the album of the same title on amazon & Itunes is a Dutch comp).

Have been enjoying The Last Real Texas Blues Band in the car changer the past week. I like how they kept Doug's instructions to sound guy in during the songs ("More vocal in the monitor.", "Turn the organ up!").

Mendocino was one of my best bargain-bin finds ever: an original delete bought in Rockford, Illinois, in maybe 1981 or '82.

Spotify mostly has a bunch of the who=knows compilations I mentioned re Amazon, way upthread, and also like on Amazon, you gotta search on variations of his name, but did find a few original albums; just now checked Groover's Paradise(with Cook & Clifford of Creedence, I think). It does shine a benevolent light, kind of a bar or even lounge glow, although could easily be such an establishment with a steel door and waitpersons with gang tats---or a living room equipped with electric piano, horns and other nice things. Good re-contextualizing (to some degree) of the changes from "House of the Rising Sun" on "Houston Chicks," ("are good to the men they love.")
But several fade in and out, a mite too vague, despite some good licks, on guitar and other instruments.
Do also really like the most Tex Mex-sounding one, the only instrumental, "La Cacahunta," a sympathetic ballad, "Her Dream Man Never Came," and the strong finale, "Catch Me In The Morning," when he's at his best, and won't say "the things I shouldn't say," and can best deal with "the changes you're puttin' on me." Some others may grow on me, what the heck. Glad I listened.

I checked out the Sir Doug Austin City Limits performance from 1981 at my local public library.
Augie Meyers is in fine form throughout. They cover 96 Tears and You're Gonna Miss Me and play a bunch of Sir Doug hits.

^^That's the song he covered with his sons on the Roky tribute album. They later did "You Don't Know (How Young You Are)" on Daydreaming At Midnight, the mid-90s major label SDQ comeback album.

One of the few things to love about More American Graffiti is how Sahm's performance as bandleader doing two gigs in one night--the first at a Ballroom doing Bo Diddley by way of The Yardbirds, the other playing fiddle on Country covers in a Saloon--is a pretty accurate picture of his life from say, 1968 til the day he died.

I'd never even heard of them until they showed up in a Marcus column reprinted on GreilMarcus.net. The song he writes about, "I Know You Know," is indeed excellent, so I ordered a reissued CD off Amazon (cheap). At least half of it is almost as good, and there's one song, "I Don't Want to Be Seen with You," I like even more. (Great title--a somewhat loftier Ramones title.) Here's another good one:

One of the two bluesy rock songs is lousy, the other's not bad. The rest of it, highly recommended--after a couple of listens in the car, better than a number of more famous cult albums from the same era, I'd say (came out in 1970).

I have that CD! Terrific album. Louie Ortega was later in the Quintet, who recorded some of his songs.

I've been trying to think of good comparisons for all their great slow and mid-tempo songs...Somewhere in the vicinity of Buffalo Springfield or Moby Grape? Yeah, they moved to Frisco not long afterwards directly because of that bust. Ironically, a similar incident happened in San Antonio when he moved back in the early '70s.

I'm sure Arpaio etc. were watching his return. Wise to leave in the first instance, considering for instance the asylum alternative fate of busted Roky, and more typically re that era, "There are people still serving prison time in Texas for being busted for like a seed in the 60s"---John Belushi, ca. 1980 (I knew a guy this happened to).

Wow, it's wild to see an ILM thread about a local band! I thought for sure only we knew about them; e.g., I was pretty sure no where else did the "oldies" radio stations ever play "She's About a Mover" or "Mendocino", two songs I definitely remember listening to as a young child in the '80s via "oldies" radio (I tended to stick with whatever types of music my parents listened to until I was around 10 years old). But... y'all love the Sir Douglas Quintet, huh? I... don't mind them, actually. Even though they're one of the acts credited for creating the most god-awful "musical" "genre" of Tejano, except unlike the Tejano acts what they recorded could actually be construed as "music".

That’s German Wikipedia obviously, but I heard these songs played as golden oldies on Dutch radio as well. “Mendocino” especially was a big hit in many European countries.

I stand by this. Marathoning the Complete Mercury Masters box today, and this is about as much fun as you can have on record

I recently rolled the dice on what looked like a rough vinyl copy of Doug Saldana on eBay (only payed around $10 w/shipping vs. $25+ 'nicer' copies go for). It turned out fine, maybe a little hissy, but a killer LP all the same.

However, the jacket has a full seam split on top, with a partial on the bottom, which seems kind of common with this album, even on 'nicer' copies. Phillips obviously not spending a lot on packaging the SDQ by then.

I imagine maybe that the singles comp Sundazed put out didn't sell well enough to justify further reissues, but it's sad that you can't just walk into a good record store and pick up shiny presses of those Smash/Phillips/Mercury SDQ albums, which are way better than a lot of the 60s-70s obscure Rock stuff typically unearthed and enthused over.

Sir Douglas Quintet: The Complete Mercury Masters: Digital-only re-reissue of the CD box, so no booklet, but no collector's prices, either. Still a reeling, chugging, loose and tight, amazing body of work, wobblers and all. Almost all of it is finally on legit import CDs, (that's how long it's been since orig. releases), ones and doubles and maybe some triples, with several Acacia reissues breadcrumbing stray tracks astutely gleaned by Paul Nelson for Rough Edges (1973), the scratchy bargain bin baby which I snapped up donkey's years ago, and have never seen even as a bootleg CD---but they're allll here, together again.
Ones I've never heard before incl. 7" edits, maybe audibly a little more loosely tight than the LP versions, if it's not the power of suggestion, and the Spanish-language EP I've heard tell of: re-recordings, or maybe remixes, with somebody else singing (I read somewhere that Sahm refused to learn the lingo). I miss the yearning drive and surety of Doug, finding his way through the low-budget sonics, but the other guys put their backs in, and "Nuevo Laredo," with hammering piano x drums, is a memorable ride on a bumpy road, in the back of a pick-up road (hold on, we're goin' to town). Also this version of "It Didn't Even Bring Me Down," with a re-title that might translate as "It's the Moon's Fault." Got some learning of my own to do.
We also get Sahm or SDQ-produced tracks of Roy Head and Junior Parker, backed by Southwestern R&B ensembles--not quite combos, in my mind, considering the big, never intrusive horn sound, though it may be generated by just two or three players, in such robust clarity. Parker seems a little subtle or tentative or something at times, but "Your Bag is Bringin' Me Down" and "Movin' Out" work, and Head (whose stash also incl. "Bag") throws himself right in there from the beginning (must find that folder of hot Head tracks sent by Edd Hurt). Speaking of hot, there are a couple of Sahmesque guitar solos, on "Nuevo Laredo" and "Movin' Out."
