oooh, I love those dresses, R! You've done well. No new dresses for me lately.. BUUUUUUUUUUT, in the middle of February I'll be in ~Cuba~ for our honeymoon and I will get to wear the dresses I've purchased over the fall/winter without having to deal with tights and shrugs and other sources of warmth! Very excited.

I have two Modcloth dresses that don't fit well either :(

Now that is what I call a dress-wearing occasion!

ljubljana, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

The one thing I am proud of – and this might be because the weather has been more mild in general – is that I have successfully continued to wear skirts and dresses all through winter, simply adding on a couple layers but finally keeping some sense of style. In years past I always just suck it up and throwing pants on all winter long. I simply do not look very good in pants, I have finally reconciled myself to this fact. But I sure as hell could use a tan!

Forgive the shitty grammar, I am lazy and used the speech to text option to type this for me. Terrible.

That gets easier when you a) don't own pants, and b) are from Michigan and waited for the school bus outside in all weather, and c) are a sturdy peasant like me.

Global warming also a help tbh. NYC has been ridic so far this "winter."

I've been waiting for the bus my whole life in Toronto... I don't even know how to drive. :( I used to be able to wear jeans to work, that was easier..this year I picked warm boots over thick leg cover!

Finefinemusic: Cuba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is incredibly awesome!!! It's been a dream destination spot for me for decades. I came close once but the person I was traveling with at the time was not serious about it. Congratulations and best wishes, enjoy your honeymoon!

*tera, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 08:04 (twelve years ago) link

Thank you! We're really excited. This is the first time either of us have escaped "winter" to go somewhere nice, and we were both too afraid of Mexico, heh. Plus we're historical junkies (he comes with a side of political junkie as well) so we're really looking forward to Havana.

Back to dresses, I don't know if I didn't see these before or eShakti added a bunch of new ones, but can I say DAMN THEM!! ?

I like the pear dress, esp. the color, but that black one is a bit busy for me. I can't really wear large prints.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 14:32 (twelve years ago) link

ahhh, that's fair. It was more the idea of clock prints that somehow whispered your name to me! Heh. It *is* a bit busy. Also I wish it were possible for all prints to always line up at the seams.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 24 January 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

I do like clocks!

La Lechera, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

Ooh the knit stripes. All the other ones are anathema to my body type but cheerful fabrics.

Love the yellow polka dot, LOVE as in I WANT!

Has anyone out there ever ordered a dress from:

Shabby Apple?

*tera, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

Now I want the pear dress as well because it does have a flattering cut. Not buying dresses until after I deliver though....

*tera, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

That clock print one is awesome although that fit would look terrible on me.

kinder, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

So, I'm wearing the black and white striped dress I posted above and I'm in love with the shape which is really flattering for me (I have small hips and a sticky-out tummy). I'd love to find more with a high-ish, defined waist and slightly flared skirt, but more work-appropriate, i.e. plain and less flare in the skirt. Any ideas for places to look?

Also, I want to be able to recreate this look but with tops and skirts. I realize this means I'll have to learn to belt. Where on earth to start? I haven't tucked in a top since I was about 10.

ljubljana, Sunday, 29 January 2012 15:23 (twelve years ago) link

Ohh, tucked pants are still mine enemy, but I've had good luck with skirts. Except I am too squishy for belts to look very good on me; still don't have the knack for them. I generally wear high-waisted skirts so the tucking looks nicer (hits me in the spot where I can pretend I am not lumpy, heh.) Aside from eShakti and the Canadian site Rickis, I don't have many dress sites to rep for you, though..

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 30 January 2012 15:49 (twelve years ago) link

just aim to recreate the blousey 90s! i miss my old button up paisley shirts. we used to call them heyday shirts

http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/811/cover_123181592009.jpg

also i think laurel said somewhere that ll bean or one of those otherwise outdoorsy/stodgy retailers has good tailored skirts for work?

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

Oh, she did! Land's End if I recall?

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Monday, 30 January 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

right! they were nice skirts, if a little pricey iirc?

La Lechera, Monday, 30 January 2012 16:12 (twelve years ago) link

oh, nice recommendation - there are some nice a-line skirts on there. But they sit on the hips... I think I will have to scour many sites.

ljubljana, Monday, 30 January 2012 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

this skirt is pink but i think it's what you're looking for? http://shopruche.com/pink-lady-button-up-skirt.html#NP=640e3ad33a463382b0a4e701c88fa961
most of my high waisted skirts are vintage so i have no idea where to buy them new.

La Lechera, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

Yes!! The pink wouldn't work for me but at least such skirts are out there somewhere - thanks. I should definitely try for vintage as well.

Bit worried I will feel claustrophobic with anything pressing on my stomach, but I can but try.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 01:09 (twelve years ago) link

I have the skirt in denim!

those are great, love the first one especially. Where from?

ljubljana, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

They're all from some special color block collection at Bloomingdales. I really really love the 1st and 2nd but need to wait for them to go on sale, I think.

Anthropologie has these cute linen jumpers:

http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=24181083&color=008&catId=THERES_ALSO&navAction=jump

http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/catalog/productdetail.jsp?id=24047391&parentid=QUICKSHOP&navAction=jump#BVRRWidgetID

But just a bit tooo pricey for me. Makes me wish I had my sewing machine and could whip up something for myself like this. Then again, all those pin tucks would bring on a meltdown. I know myself too well. Not up to the challenge, but wiling to do hard labor for a week, just pay me with these two dresses.

*tera, Sunday, 12 February 2012 00:48 (twelve years ago) link

Shabby Apple wrote me back!! Their spokes-writer says they don't donate to any pro-life causes, that almost all their giving is to a company called Unitus, who apparently make micro-loans to women in developing countries. Occasionally, she writes, they might donate to Make-A-Wish "or those supporting research for breast cancer and other related causes," but normally those latter donations would be in the form of free merchandise that can be sold or awarded as part of fund-raising.

SO...LET THE WANTING COMMENCE.

So while you're on vacation, you know how you have to keep your passport beside you or you will spontaneously combust or something? I have one of those fabric PP holders with a strap that you can put around your neck and slip under your shirt. Always seemed a little flimsy. I like wearing dresses, obviously, and the humidity in Cuba (amazing, btw!) put me in a dangerous position to have inner-thigh friction. So the day we went on a walking tour of Havana, I busted out a similar pair of Spanx to this (http://www.spanx.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10918464&cp=2992553.11308615&parentPage=family) and it kept my thighs from hurting AND cemented my flimsy passport holder into place. A++, would travel in again! I just wish the top was cut slightly differently as I find the strap sometimes shows on the side of my arm holes.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

were the spanx not super hot though in that humidity?
i have a spanx-like camisole thing that i bought a few years ago when fleshier and have hardly ever worn it bc it is v warm. and tight. i do not own any spanx but i think about it sometimes.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:02 (twelve years ago) link

nah, after the first day my body got adjusted to the humidity - but I was worried my thighs might chafe ;) It was a pretty light dress, so I was feeling pretty great! The camisole I linked to is pretty lightweight, similar to a bathing suit imo. But I might just be used to it - I wear it a lot under dresses.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 22 February 2012 18:06 (twelve years ago) link

I wear spanx as an anti-chafing measure all the time.

tokyo rosemary, Wednesday, 22 February 2012 19:23 (twelve years ago) link
