creating a photo website

think i maybe said this before in a photo/website discussion, but i am gonna throw out a contentious bone, just to confuse things: i think i just don't like thumbnails?, like something about them is counter to the idea of seeing a photo anew, & also because my photos are all precious snowflakes & i like the idea of everyone having to see them all properly, rather than skim over some because borrrrr-ingggggg just more foliage, &c.

so i could still get behind sets, but i think maybe from somewhere linked by text or by following one big image for more along the same lines.

you all might disagree though!, & i can see that this is maybe a nicer theory than it is a practical solution, especially if you're looking through a bunch of photos that you're not necessarily equally invested in.

i found a good tumblr theme, for anyone wanting to go the tumblr route, so will try to post that here later also

yes. you could use indexexhibit, have minimal text in a frame on the left and just have a ten-deep set of photos on the right?

this was the tumblr theme btw, not a million miles away from a kinda minimal indexexhibit thing; a few quick html things you could do to change it up slightly would be to change the spacing between photos, & turn off the details (when posted &c) underneath posts. or just post your whole set in one post and avoid all of this, and delete the post notes thing.

would you be able to put links to posts in the righthand sidebar?

hm what's the righthand sidebar? you'd def be able to make links, to whatever, in your main 'menu' bar, so on the site above where it has 'description' 'install' 'ask me anything', &c, you could link to the specific posts/sets. i'm not sure what you mean by righthand sidebar - do you mean flipping it so that that's where the menu is, and the imgs are on the left? i'm sure that's poss too.

all my experience of doing html stuff with tumblr is just finding values in the code and changing them from 50 to 90 or w/e, and seeing what gets bigger, as well as cutting and pasting different bits of the code so they're in diff places (which i guess you'd use to change the order of anything)

ha nuh uh! i think that theme is p good; once it's there i would recommend playing with some of the easier-to-modify variables to get it just how you like it, but i think it's probably good to go. indexexhibit is neat though, like literally neat, it looks v good. from what i've read about it (you have to put in work and effort) there's a slightly convoluted setup process in which you hook it up to yr domain, but i think it is maybe the best looking option, unless you are gonna build your own thing (which is the thing i did, out of notepad/msword html, & i like it).

What do u like about Host Gator, milo?

It's the cheapest I found with no downtime issues and sites on there seem to load fast. Unlimited domains on one account is nice, too.

Tbh, I've stuck with them out of inertia, there could be cheaper out there.

admrl - hostgator came up when I was doing research as a good site, so I don't see any reason why not.

I like indexhibit because it's not flash or javascript, allows me to organize pictures as sets without any bothersome thumbnails etc.

thumbnails are quite possibly the most useless feature I have ever thought about.

I like to keep domains separate from hosting do there's no hassle with switching hosts if that ever happens.

ha yeah it was dayo, i have a bookmarked string of ilp photohomes i was checking out. i actually looked for your IHKH, china, & wondered where it went; cool you got your site goin (end of post update: wow! this is really nice! cf wow. if you don't mind revealing, how did you make your site? it looks excellent, you guys make compelling arguments for the symmetry of sets, i think i am still more into strings* for my phots)

but yeah the escher mall & the skull in the store, so good. i like the whole sweep of having a set of city images that includes the dramatic-overheads as well as the street-level shots.

the site I made by myself with a little dreamweaver and a little straight html and css coding. I know just enough to get by. no one would say that my code is elegant (I used tables in ways they shouldn't be used).
I still want to refine though. put up a few more sequences, etc. also figure out what the site should *do*. glad you like it!

after so much talk I went ahead and did horizontal scrolling. think I came out against that before? I ended up changing my mind. I could still see doing some as slideshows if I can figure out the code.

that was an xpost with the horizontal scrolling post. the fact that my apple mouse is broken and the scrolling ball only works side to side is not unrelated to my new horizontally scrolling website.

oh cool, I am glad. i am figuring ILP can handle the duplicity of me regularly repping for it, it is such a nice thing to look through, there is always just the right amount. kind of like the set of you walking around shooting, the photos speak to each other really pleasingly. she is my fav. i think i am invoking her here wrt the what a site should *do* thing, because it seems like the best fit for being able to just look at the photos and think around them, for them to bleed into each other and fold into the whole set. but there's something nice about the slight (NO OFFENCE) clutter of yours; that you move a photo into an open space and then look at it, like you're at a microfilm machine, like you're pulling something into focus to contemplate on it more than you are scrolling.

your site's so great!, anyway. good times is just killing me, the light, the patio, the mirrors. (nb, i also love this, & think that you should photoshop one of those crouched-op-art-guys-with-a-towel-full-of-oil-pastels onto this one). if it is up for debate i am curious about camera rudis, also.

my latin is rusty, but I think (hope!) camera rudis means 'crude/raw/untrained etc. camera' (aka chamber). it's a play on camera obscura and camera lucida.
I def. wanted to have photos next to other photos. I often think that pictures have strength in numbers and are best seen among MORE PICTURES!
rule #1 of photography iirc is, whenever a mirror is present, take a picture.

haha I finally figured out that horizontal scrolling is meant to be a spatial metaphor for the way pictures are presented in a physical gallery space

one thing CV - on the horizontal scrolling galleries, the place name is static, but on my screen there's no way to present the pictures so that either the place name or the header isn't always overlaid on top of the pictures... my screen rez is 1440x900 if that helps

think my fav is the baroque period. the blue trash bags, three traffic cones, flags

yeah dylannn the photo-diary approach aka personal diarist etc. is def a valid one, sort of a hedge between the photoessay and THIS PICTURE MUST STAND ALONE approach

feel like i want to keep a photo-log, now. a separate thing from the few variations on portfolios i thought about before/have now, where it's fun to artfully/colourfully/thematically juxtapose. because i like the territory of days rendered by the few things you include in them. i develop stuff non-chronologically, though, so i can't decide how i'd do it.

I signed up for a trial with 4ormat.com - kind of a fancier, hosted indexhibit. Dunno if it would be worth $12/month in the end.

i know y'all probably figured this out but man don't use photobucket, fuck a retroactive-automatic-photo-resize, it fucked my whole photo-log.

also on a lighter note i figured out my rolling/archival photolog dilemma & built it - it has now & a then sections - + i am going to start it for real in September (though i can't imagine having the discipline/$$ to develop in chronological order, or to sort phots into days rather than batches).

i guess this would be more of a question if i asked for domain-hosting advice that factored in the photocentric concern of needing a bunch of space for images.

also should note that i am in fact referring to imageshack not photobucket, but using 'photobucket' because it is a more amusing name which is ingrained in my head

it's annoying because you need to start a daily mysQL process (at least if you use indexhibit) that will cost money per day

if you don't need to start a daily mysql process then it's just bandwith used which is pennies I think

i have been trying to work this stuff out, & was intending on using this place. but i am only mentioning this in case you want webhosting-forum-enthusiast-endorsed traditional hosting sites, NFS looks great.

hey so here is a photography website question,

photo filesizes: do they matter

i think i worry that resolution is now a delicate thing, because people use both cellphones & also retina monitors, & i wondered about including images as large files that resize to a browser window. is it terrible to download an enormous image when you load a page? why is this terrible? how big is too big? how should we deal with this?

I'd suggest choosing a medium resolution size, and uploading images at the same size at which they'll be displayed. not only would the filesizes be too large if you upload full resolution, but you would have no control over how the browser will scale the image.

yeah, that sounds sensible & about right. ty. it just feels frustrating, because at the moment it would be really good to have some flexibility. when you upload things to picasa (which i think is a sorta facade for google drive), the url generated includes a number which you can alter to automatically generate a new copy of the JPG; so if you change it to s200 you get a small-ish image, it's like 120kb, if it's s800 it's a reasonable document size & it's 400kb, & so on. i put things online & played around with like, too large file sizes - so say 5mb for very large images - & at the same time that they are, kinda obviously, too large, i feel like they mean that i can look at things on a really big imac monitor at school & they look good & i can see the grain, but the images are resizing (albeit slowly) if i look at them on a desktop. i've been playing with using css to set image widths or heights to a percentage, rather than a pixel #, & i like what it means for viewing a website. if it wasn't for knowing that anyone looking at a site on a cellphone would be just blitzing their dataplan i would probably settle for a slow-loading website right now. i mean it's photos, people can wait.

tbh I tend to dislike super large images on photo websites. I feel like you can't really 'see the photograph' in those cases, but just see a million little details or the grain.
