curmudgeon, Monday, 23 January 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

is there any way to listen to that thing on my iphone? i've been trying to locate a podcast for it for like half an hour now...

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 05:07 (twelve years ago) link

Is the podcast link on the bottom of the npr music homepage working?

I need to listen to that mix

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link

the little bit i heard this morning on my laptop before leaving for work was amazing. unfortunately i can't find a way to put it on my iphone and until i can do that, i can only listen in tiny chunks

Mordy, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

kudos to this guy for amassing such an amazing collection -- and for really having a great sense of what is fantastic about it while curating

I think an article about him (Ian Nagoski of True Vine Records in Baltimore) made the Da Capo best music crit writing collection

Is this the right place to ask about (not necessarily 2012) African dance music? I'd love if someone could school me on hyperactive Ivorian coupé décalé like DJ Arafat:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zFfTuen7EQ

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 13:40 (twelve years ago) link

That Berlin-based sometime ilxor could probably school you and me on coupe decale.

Looking at the EMP Pop Conference thread, I noticed several items that should be of interest to folks on this thread, and I realized that I should try to find time to see if I would like Korean K-pop (which is the subject of several folks there).

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

K-pop currently being celebrated on the EOY countdown btw.

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

Thanks.

And others are celebrating an Ethiopian born, Finnish raised singer/songwriter with a ghostly Mazzy Star feel (according to Ned R.)

I keep getting emails about kizomba dance classes and a monthly kizomba dance night. All I know about this genre/dance is that I think it is an Angolan genre with its roots in French Caribbean zouk.

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 January 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

There was a thread about it lately:

What kind of music is this?

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 27 January 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

Cool. Thanks, I missed that. Will check it out this weekend.

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 January 2012 17:47 (twelve years ago) link

So is the title of this year's thread scaring people away from it?

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 January 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago) link

You know, sometimes I wonder about you.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 27 January 2012 17:51 (twelve years ago) link

How about we lock this one and you start a new one with world written as "whirled" and the magic buzz-word "sublime" in the title. That'll fool 'em.

John Gaw Meme (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 27 January 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

I just haven't heard anything in 2012 that I'd consider world music yet! I'm sure I will. Just nothing has shown up on my radar yet.

Mordy, Friday, 27 January 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link

I was referring to a comment by Rob in that kizomba thread about who reads international club dance threads versus ones like this. Nothing worked to enhance contributions so that's why I cut back to the also broad "African " thing last year... Whatever, this is fine Rudiph.

curmudgeon, Friday, 27 January 2012 19:48 (twelve years ago) link

I posted this in the k-pop thread but no takers -- I'm dying to talk about Crying Nut with anybody....

They're a Korean punk band. Here are a few of the songs I like...

Really not sure where to post this (Summer Jams??? African Dance???) but this is my favourite song today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuHMBze2B84

Wikipedia sez:

Logobi also written in French as Logobie is an urban musical genre accompanied with certain dance moves. It first appeared in Côte d'Ivoire in 1986 and became popularized initially in university campuses in Abidjan. It became an international dance trend that moved to other African countries and eventually continental Europe. The dance is based on Côte d'Ivoire's traditional Zouglou dance with new elements added and sometimes Zouglou and 'logobi are used interchangeably, although zouglou is more ancient whereas logobi is a more modern development.

eh, don't listen to me, rusty allen never posted any kuduro to that African dance thread anyway. but I feel you: the dancehall thread has been pretty quiet--maybe it's too cold for tropical sounds.

Crying Nut - The beginning of that video on youtube is a bit like that scene from Dovzchenko's Earth and the rest of it has that restless energy on those Goran Bregovic soundtracks, maybe?

curmudgeon, that Sarkodie video i posted upthread is Azonto if you're curious.

just posting this here to remind myself to read them later; two takes on Congolese artist Baloji: http://thequietus.com/articles/07845-baloji-interview-konono-no-1 and http://wayneandwax.com/?p=6175
have to keep an eye on that Afrosonic column on the Quietus; Perry seems to have very specific tastes but that might even be an advantage in some ways

Instead of checking out various stuff on Fader or elsewhere last night, I streamed Brooklyn folkie indie-rock Sharon Van Etten on NPR. Eh, what was I thinking. Saw Red Baraat live recently. Fun horns and percussion combo.

Ethiopian-American singer Meklit Hadero is gonna be in DC Wednesday. This is an interesting Montreal newspaper piece on her and her various musical directions:

The three of us made a hip hop space opera where we use metaphors of galaxy distances and space travel to talk about diaspora and cultural connection. It’s a really exciting project. We got star sounds from NASA to use in our beats and I’m also playing an electro mix of star sounds on the guitar in live shows.

The next album after that will be a duo collaboration between myself and Quinn DeVeaux. Quinn is a soul singer based in Oakland and we’re doing covers of indie rock and art rock songs, but also some originals. But we are looking at the soul roots of indie rock and art rock. And I’m also working on new songs for my next solo record, which will be more like 2013.

The reissues are not snubbed, just not included in polls of new albums. They seem to receive a lot of praise. I have seen a few critics poll votes for Batida and Ondatropica. I find something too gimmicky about them, so I do not personally like them, but some clearly do. They are not marketed to a Latino radio audience (or at least a USA one I would guess) and I do not think the label can afford to push promo cds or downloads to lots of critics.

I was looking for some Indian and Asian music and the one thing I saw to check out is Kiran Ahluwalia - Common Ground from last year. Anything else? I like how Tinariwen and other Malian bands have been touching on some psychedelic rock, and I imagined that would be a cool fusion in the context for Indian artists, but have not heard of anything.

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 28 December 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

Have you listened to any of that Sa Dingding I've linked to (in this thread, and on her own thread, and on the ILM EOY campaigning thread, and probably a couple other places)? Asian-Canadian Yamantaka//Sonic Titan? Not very Asian here, but it seems up your alley if you haven't heard it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhxrH1pWRVw

(Better is their full ablum from last year.)

I find the Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen board Electric Mole a good lead for Asian music, but that may be because I already share an enthusiasm for SR/TJ. The lists here are a mix of the usual suspects plus for Asiancentric choices, plus more idiosyncratic ones: http://forums.electricmole.net/showthread.php?t=2019

(I remember that you liked Adult to some extent.)

Or are you mostly looking for Indian and Pakistani music (and the like)? I can't say I've heard anything much from this year.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:39 (eleven years ago) link

This rolling listening thread has turned up some good things for me, too. Lots of Asian music posted to it (not what we'd normally think of as world music, and again not really Indian/Pakistani): http://forums.electricmole.net/showthread.php?t=8

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:47 (eleven years ago) link

There was also this which I think might have had more people posting to it, and more Asian material, unless I'm mis-remembering (also possible):

http://forums.electricmole.net/showthread.php?t=1966

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 December 2012 00:53 (eleven years ago) link

Oh yeah, maybe you'd like Zazen Boys' albums, Stories. I knew I was forgetting something Asian from my own list.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 29 December 2012 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

I liked Mordy's whirled list

curmudgeon, Monday, 31 December 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

Curmudgeon, you might as well start 2013's thread. (I do think it makes sense to keep it even as we all moan about the "world music" label.)
