pretty worthless website, normally just ignore but I got a great laugh out of
"His lyrical dexterity comes to screeching halt on Yella Diamonds when every one of his bars ends with the same noun."
lol at dude who has never heard of internal rhyming.

"the same noun"
― the greates (crüt), Wednesday, 8 February 2012 04:41 (twelve years ago) link
the great thing about that is that in the clean version it becomes an end-rhyme
"aston martin music" is really good

it would be one of my favorite rick ross songs if you edited it down to just the rick ross parts. as is, fuck it.
― Citizen Ship (some dude), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:03 (eleven years ago) link
Ha, I easily prefer the epic extended version with Drake feeling like all four members of Color Me Badd. Also, why would you want to cut Chrisette?
― weak willie (longneck), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:38 (eleven years ago) link
even the drake parts are good on aston martin music. that's how good it is.
― crüt, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 09:42 (eleven years ago) link
"too doo what I had too doo" and "as...ton...mar...tin...myoo...zeek" are shitty hooks imo

"Aston Martin Music" makes me kinda get, so briefly, what other people see in Drake. Every note he sings comes as a surprise, I suspect to himself more than anyone else.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 7 November 2012 10:44 (eleven years ago) link
yeah he def sounds like he's making it up as he goes along
― Citizen Ship (some dude), Wednesday, 7 November 2012 10:44 (eleven years ago) link
it's 2015 and this album still sounds great
the whole thing is excellent but MC Hammer -> BMF -> Aston Martin Music is my favorite part
― welltris (crüt), Saturday, 5 September 2015 19:16 (eight years ago) link
Yeah this is all time for me, too. One of those rare records where the monster singles are perfectly balanced with the album cuts

What's the consensus on dude's post-peak music, Mastermind / Black Market? I dig the beats on Black Market a lot, no "B.M.F."-like material but I honestly don't care about that sound. Also it's the only reason I know Scott Storch and JR Rotem still exist, I forgot that Rotem in particular is probably the hackiest producer ever but the Mariah Carey remake is good

also is dude Nas's favorite new-school rapper or something (relatively-speaking,) he seems to collaborate with him a decent amount
― nova, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 06:55 (eight years ago) link
He's the only current rapper I listen to. I think Mastermind is great, don't love Black Dollar/Black Market as much but they're solid albums.

Mastermind had a couple tracks that are among my favorite songs of the last few years.
War Ready https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ax9YLJ8Wt5Q
Blk & Wht https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI86g6eQOfs
― Spottie, Wednesday, 20 January 2016 18:41 (eight years ago) link
I like "War Ready" but find the end of it kinda unnerving. As far as Black Dollar/Market, not sure why "Money Dance" is >7 minutes but it's cool cuz that's a great vibe-out beat
Still don't care about dude's rapping with a couple exceptions I can think of ("Foreclosures,") but it doesn't get in the way for me, idk how much of it is just thinking dude doesn't have the greatest voice for rap -- I definitely prefer Nas's verse on "One of Us" for instance but it's not like they're flowing all that different.
I didn't even realize him & Jeezy dropped albums at the end of last year for a bit
― nova, Friday, 22 January 2016 05:42 (eight years ago) link
hard to listen to any of his later stuff imo

I can't imagine reaching for any Rick Ross album other than Teflon Don or Rich Forever, but Mastermind was interesting because, along with all of Ross's Harry Fraud and Nas collabs, it revealed what a traditionalist the guy is. Made it really easy to imagine a scenario where he spends the rest of his career just playing to the "real rap" crowd, releasing solid but unexciting LPs that never change much kinda like Wu-Tang and Boot Camp and all those old New York types do.
Kinda a funny turn for a guy who began his career so reviled by traditionalists.

i'd listen to deeper than rap too.

strange choice to put "bmf" and "mc hammer" at the back end of the album. maybe stacking it with "i'm not a star" at the beginning would've been tough peak to descend from

I STILL hear this in my head when I think of this song almost 13 years later, lmao.
still love this album and inexplicably been bumping it again the last few weeks. feels a little weird blasting BMF in my car in fuckin' 2023 with the world going to hell and falling apart but y'know, whadya gonna do

Sorry to butt in but since this is at the top now, can anyone kindly direct me to the current hip hop thread? I mostly want to work though my cognitive dissonance over some Confederate flag crap Westside Gunn posted — I just should probably just let it go right. This is old news to most hip hop heads.
