i think that's how i learned the word "rationale" too

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

Seriously? I just spilled like 1/4 cup of water on my cell phone, 98% of which was kept away by the protective cover, but apparently the three drops that got inside the cover have fucked it completely. So not happy right now.

i was probably 7, so yeah

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago) link

He is really intense about the stress of daily living in that song, it is troo.

Its cool, might be an excuse to upgrade but of course I am 6 months away from contract ending. The water indicator strip appears to not have been touched though, so I don't know.

Billy Joel vid is making me feel better.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

it's totally hilarious!

This was my mom's preferred "cleaning album" on Saturdays so I heard more fucking Billy Joel in my life than I ever needed to hear.

"Allentown" still rules

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

Allentown is legitimately a good song.

R is a huge, unrepentant, celebratory fan of Billy Joel

like she will threaten to cut your face if you besmirch him

not really

but close

long duk dan (dan m), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

like she will threaten to cut your face if you besmirch him
this is the kind of dedication i can support

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:29 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know that many of his songs. i am an unabashed fan of "uptown girl" because it's so dorky and catchy, kinda like "we didn't start the fire," and despise "piano man." can't think of any other ones i know.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah "Allentown" is a good song and my parents dragged me to see him live once and I'll begrudgingly admit he put on a good show, but he has so many corny songs that I just can't really ever take him seriously.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago) link

we've been singing "honesty" to the dog for a while now, subbing his name (vonnegut) for the titular line

usually it goes "vonnnnnnegut / is such a giant dog", or "is sleeping on the floor", or whatever else he happens to be doing at the time

sometimes I think we've both gone insane simultaneously and therefore seem completely normal to one another

long duk dan (dan m), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

you don't want me to go into detail with my billy joel memories

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:34 (twelve years ago) link

I was a big fan of "Storm Front" in seventh grade.

the emancipation of distraction (askance johnson), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

was steely dan's "barrytown" a response to "allentown" or vice versa?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

xp "downeaster 'alexa'" is a pretty rockin jam

long duk dan (dan m), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link

'keepin the faith' is pretty bad

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago) link

I had Storm Front because it was the first time I forgot to return one of those Columbia House things on time and it showed up. I didn't learn until later that I could've just sent it back. I think I listened to it once.

my only other billy joel reference is getting a casio for xmas when i was like 11 and the demo song being "just the way you are." i wonder how much money he got for that.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

$1,000,000

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

weird
mine had stuff like "down by the old folks home" and "greensleeves"

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

OK FINE i also know "my life" which is annoyingly catchy. gets stuck in my head when i don't want it there.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

i know like a zillion billy joel songs
and i'm going to sing all of them here tonight

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

good comment on the youtube video for "my life"

why can't musicians like billy joel be around today

Coolz444 1 month ago 4

pretty sure billy joel is still alive?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:43 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, but to be sort of fair to Coolz444 he's only been "composing" classical stuff for a long time now.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

the good old days weren't always good
and tomorrow ain't as bad as it see-ee-eeems

La Lechera, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of enjoy that b. joel has stopped writing new songs and just performs the hits now

the emancipation of distraction (askance johnson), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

there was a b. joel concert on pbs a couple weeks ago and it was almost enjoyable

the emancipation of distraction (askance johnson), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

that video is really weird. it has a long intro where billy joel is tough and wearing a leather jacket and walking around with other tough guys while a groovin' beat plays, then suddenly they're in a recording studio dressed like dorks playing the song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3JFEfdK_Ls&ob=av2n

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers.
You'll get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers.

I've always meant to listen to more Billy Joel after reading Chuck Klosterman's impassioned defense of Glass Houses a while ago.

Here are the Billy Joel singles I recognize as having heard:

Piano Man (Probably? I couldn't hum it.)
New York State of Mind (I know I've heard it at least once -- in The Beaver Trilogy)
Just the Way You Are
Only the Good Die Young
My Life
You May Be Right
It's Still Rock and Roll to Me
Uptown Girl (Probably the first B. Joel song I ever heard, since the Chipmunks covered it)
We Didn't Start the Fire
I Go to Extremes
The River of Dreams

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

I sort of think I like the idea of Billy Joel more than the reality. Like I think the aesthetic of it being 1978 and this sad-eyed crooner playing piano in a fancy brass furnished and wood-panelled bar for lawyers doing bumps in the bathroom as they prepare for, or come down from, a night at the disco is sort of cool. But then I hear his songs.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

xp Oh, and also The Longest Time, which is Kr's favorite B. Joel song.

Girl I want to take you to a JBR (jaymc), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

All apologies to R but I p much hate Billy Joel, except for Allentown. You grow up as close to Jersey as I did and you will either love him or be so overexposed to him that his music gives you stabbing head pain. I'm in the latter camp.

gonna give her the old fuquay-varina (Jenny), Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, watching that pbs concert was interesting because the audience was basically filled with the kind of people I hated growing up in the NYC area...
