yeah, souvenirs is great but I haven't felt the need to explore much else either (x-post)

overall though it feels a lot more like 90s bands like Hum or Chavez to me than metal

this is somewaht true though imo alcest are wayyyyy too tepid rhythmically to merit comparison to those kinds of bands.

yeah i don't prefer it, a lot of the black metal stuff i've heard has p boring drum parts, it's almost like a skiffle type beat to me, or a johnny cash beat with shitloads of cymbal shit

but i'm digging this, the prettier and less metal this record is the better imo

also curious who gave bsc a #1 vote (tho legit curious, not judgy)

BSC record is p samey but really hits the spot if I'm in the mood for trancey melodic death jams w/excellent gigantic choruses (admittedly not a mood I'm often in...)

I think I can pretty much single-handedly take credit for BSC placing at all, much less this high.

Thy Catafalque is an avantgarde post-black metal act from Makó, Hungary since 1998 but are now based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Thy Catafalque were born in 1998 in a small town of Hungary playing traditional, epic black metal in the beginning by tamás kátai (Gire) and János Juhász. Just after their first and only demo KaOtic Productions decided to release their first album in 1999 entitled Sublunary Tragedies, followed by the second record Microcosmos in 2001.

Throughout the passing years the music became more and more experimental with deep touches of electronic and folklorish influences feeding from their homeland in Central Europe. Meanwhile KaOtic Productions ceased to exist, so the third album Tűnő Idő Tárlat (An Exhibition of Vanishing Time) came to sunlight as a self-financed production in 2004. By this time lyrics turned into Hungarian and music turned out to be the most diverse and atmospheric experimentum coming out from the band. Cosmic music from micro to macro, from matter to spirit and then back into the ashes.

This world is about to be painted by more vivid colours in the latest release entitled Róka Hasa Rádió released by Epidemie Records on the 12th of May, 2009 and in November 2009 by Soyuz Music. The main concept behind the album is the relationship between the ever evolving, solid and massive physical matter and the fragileness of human and all living spirits throughout distant childhood memories and scientific explanations of nature. Revolving, rotating movements of past and future, colours, sounds, long lost scents by a strange transmission from a timeless radio.

Guest appearences by Zoltán Kónya and Balázs Hermann (Gire), Attila Bakos (Woodland Choir, Taranis), Ágnes Tóth (The Moon and the Nightspirit), Ádám Tóth (Mocun).

During the recordings Tamás Kátai left to Edinburgh, United Kingdom and finished the album there. Currently he is staying there.

After the very well appreciated Róka Hasa Rádió album, Epidemie Records decided to print a re-issue of the previous recording of Thy Catafalque entitled Tűnő Idő Tárlat. It had been released by the band itself in 2004 in a very small scale. Limited to 500 pieces of beautful digipak, the music is untouched while the artwork is renewed.

Thy Catafalque CDs are distributed by Lethal Conflict worldwide and Soyuz Music in Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

Originally released in 2004, Tűnő Idő Tárlat was re-released in limited digipak version by Epidemie Records in 2010.

In 2011 Thy Catafalque has signed to Season Of Mist. The fifth album entitled Rengeteg was released on 11 November 2011 in Europe and 10 January 2012 in North-America. All the instruments have been reccorded by Tamás Kátai alone this time, as János Juhász left the band in 2011. Guest musicians: Attila Bakos (Woodland Choir, Taranis) - all clean male vocals, Ágnes Tóth (The Moon And The Nightspirit) - female vocals, Mihály Simkó-Várnagy - cello.

listening to BSC again and now I kind of want a BSC album produced by yasutaka nakata. preferably emulating sugarless girl era capsule.

ha! I can almost hear it and it would rule.

i dont know mordy as i only added nicknames from people who i recognised. The lurkers are pretty obv ilm regulars rather than from other sites as i googled looking to see if it came up anywhere plus most of them have voted in the previous polls.

still, without them it wouldn't be much of a poll as getting blood out of stone is easier than getting metal regulars voting I'm sad to say.
Lurkers also seem to be varied in taste so it at least makes for interesting results.

Campaigning over the year but ESPECIALLY in the poll threads really does make a difference though. Lots of examples but BSC really proves it if you weren't convinced earlier by the others.

Boris (ボリス Borisu) are a Japanese experimental rock band formed in Tokyo in 1992. The band’s original lineup consisted of Atsuo, Takeshi, Wata, and Nagata who was the band’s original drummer. After his departure, Atsuo took over drums and the lineup has remained consistent to this day. Boris draw influence from a huge variety of styles including, but not limited to, psychedelic rock, punk, sludge, doom metal, drone, pop, noise, shoegaze, and ambient. The band’s name is taken from a song on Melvins’ album, Bullhead.

They released their debut full-length album, Absolutego, on their own label, Fangs Anal Satan, in 1996. Since its formation, Boris have released 17 full-length albums, three live albums, six collaborations with Japanese noise legend Merzbow among various other collaborations, and one best album Variations which focused more on the rock side of the band.

Boris saw a huge increase in popularity when Southern Lord reissued their works in North America, garnering them critical acclaim and recognition in music press. Pink, originally released in 2005 in Japan via Diwphalanx, was reissued in 2006 by Southern Lord and met with a very positive reception in the US. Blender magazine and SPIN magazine both named it one of the year’s best albums. The album also made the top of the metal section in Canadian magazine Exclaim’s reader’s poll of that year, and was in the top 10 of Pitchfork Media’s top 50 records of the year.

In 2011, Boris announced plans to release three full-length albums in the same year. The first to be released was New Album, their fifteenth album, on March 16 in Japan. The album consists of mainly j-pop with some elements of psychedelic rock and electronic styles. The next two albums, Heavy Rocks (2011) and Attention Please, were released simultaneously on May 24 through Sargent House. Heavy Rocks shares its name and cover art style with Heavy Rocks, released in 2002 in Japan. Attention Please is mostly noted for featuring lead vocals by Wata on each song. Boris co-headlined a European tour with their new label-mates Russian Circles throughout the summer from June 17 to July 17 and continued touring Europe alone from July 19 to July 24. They will also be headlining a North American fall tour from October 7 to November 12 with various openers including Tera Melos, Asobi Seksu, True Widow, Liturgy, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Coliseum, and Joe Lally.

Am I right in thinking there was a song off that one that I liked in outloud? Being not a fan of Boris (though a fan of some of their collaborations) I'd be heartened by that. Though I guess it sounds more like New Album might be it, if that's j-pop & psych.

I had a feeling Thy Catafalque would place pretty high, it's really likeable, excellent sound, interesting experimental bits, but also just good METAL. Mitochondrion's an excellent record too, thunderous and brutal but not yr standard DM. Dalriada is by far the best folk metal record I've heard this year but yeah goofy as fuck.

Morne was a concept that began with many trials and tribulations. The band was founded by Milosz Gassan in 2005, and while there were many interested individuals in making the project happen, only one lineup had the dedication and passion to make the band a reality. In 2007, Milosz was joined by Max Furst (bass) and Kevin Adams (drums) and it was here where Morne began to create and develop the band’s distinct sound heard today. After just a few months of rehearsal, the band entered a studio to record their first demo. As time went on, the songs continued to further shape and evolve. In the following summer of 2008, Morne was joined by Jeff Hayward right before the band’s first formal studio recording session for a split 12” with the UK band Warprayer.

After brief touring and intensive rehearsal, Morne finally unveiled their debut full-length album “Untold Wait” in late 2009. The album was the culmination of over 2 years efforts and hard work as a group. Morne also invited guest musicians Kris Force and Alicia Morgan to contribute their talents and signatures to further the album’s vast concept. Due to artistic and personal differences, the band parted ways with Kevin prior to the album’s release. In his place, Erik Larson stepped up to substitute for their first European tour in the summer of 2009. After nearly one year without a permanent drummer, Morne was joined by Billy Knockenhauer in September of 2010 to perform with the band full-time. The band has also since been joined by Ian Shultz to fulfill the role of permanent keyboard and sound manipulation, helping to complete the band’s live sound.

Several of mine in this run. I was the #1 for BSC, both here and in the P&J, so Jeff and his paltry #2 have nothing to brag about. Mitochondrion is right up there with Leviathan in arresting ugliness. Dalriada had probably my favorite straight folk-metal record, and I think they've been one of the best at that genre for a while now. Thy Catafalque are in a bizarro world all their own.

Sólstafir is a metal band from Reykjavík, Iceland which formed in 1995 and currently has four full length releases. The band’s unique style has made it hard to categorize Sólstafir into a specific genre or group of genres.

Sólstafir were formed by 3 friends, Aðalbjörn Tryggvason, Halldór Einarsson and Guðmundur Óli Pálmason in January 1995.

Most critics also had a hard time pinpointing Sólstafir’s music into a specific genre.

Sólstafir’s 4th full length album “Svartir Sandar” will be released on Season of Mist on October 14th in Europe and October 18th in North America.

Superb album.

Leviathan, aka Wrest, is a one-man black metal project from San Francisco, California. The band was brought to life in 1998 and was put on hold in Oct. 2007 due to a legal dispute with the record label. Wrest brought the project back in January 2008 to release the latest album. Wrest plays every instrument found in Leviathan’s music; guitar (electric + acoustic), drums, bass, synths, and vocals.
