Question from a non-collector: is that really what a "VG+ to VG++" cover looks like? I appreciate it's old but it looks pretty beat up

(I know nothing about the band either, just curious)

I thought the cover looked a bit tatty myself tbh

Actually it's not too bad I was looking at the other one they're selling for even more money, which has a tear on it.

Looking at it, that's about right:

There's Brand New (unplayed), there's Mint (which often means 'played once, shows no signs of wear), there's 'Excellent' which is 'a slight amount of wear, nothing drastic.

The "VG" is about right: Adding plusses is somewhat meaningless.

Hey, Ian (and DMR), I LOVE the new The Rebel. It's like "The Rebel plays Country Teasers Greatest Hits Live" or something (it was recorded at WFMU, was it a broadcast? Its mostly Teasers songs, too, I think but I'm not super-knowledgeable of their whole back catalogue)Maybe I should have gotten the Children's Hospital, too, I don't remember seeing it at Goner, though.

God I feel terrible and almost took the day off but I dragged ass in to work since I had the last two weeks off. Fuuuuck.

Trip Maker, Monday, 5 January 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

picked up a few things the other day...
Count Basie & his Orchestra - Listen, you shall hear (great recordings from 1937 - I'm really loving this stuff at the moment, though making tentative little steps into it as I don't want to overdo it, and also I don't really know where to start, so I just pick out familiar names)
Tommy Dorsey - Jazz Tribune Volume 1&2 (a great 2 disc set from 35-37, and with excellent newspaper styled liner notes, in french & english)
Millie Jackson - Caught Up (really good record, but even better artwork)
Elvis Presley - Clambake (I actually love all the throwaway soundtracks, and you get great bonus singles on them too - this one has Guitar Man an Big Boss Man)

scout, Monday, 5 January 2009 21:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Few things I picked up this weekend:

Pink Reason & Hue Blanc split 12"
World's Lousy w/ Ideas vol. III
Crystal Antlers EP on T&G
Blue Sabbath Black Cheer - We Like New Blockaders LP
Police - Ghosts In the Machine for 50 cents at a thrift store. Sounds just like it used to.

good luck to you ladies--you need it (contenderizer), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Steve Moore - Vaalbara LP on Noiseville

i got that too

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

where can i order the BSBC from?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 5 January 2009 21:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Dunno about ordering BSBC. Kreation seems to have copies. (But I was foolin with the name. It's called Endless Blockade, so if you have that, you have it.)

"The "VG" is about right: Adding plusses is somewhat meaningless."

VG+ is a standard record/cover rating a la Goldmine. VG as a rating is VASTLY different than VG+. VG+ is much closer to near mint than VG. I would never list that single's cover as VG+ if I were selling it on ebay.

"excellent" isn't an actual record rating. it's a word that popped up with ebay.

standard record ratings are: still sealed (which some people will call mint), mint, mint-/near mint, vg+, vg, good, good+, poor, and fair.

scott seward, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 02:11 (fifteen years ago) link

usually Good seems to be a synonym for "totally fucked"

Hey, Ian (and DMR), I LOVE the new The Rebel.

I don't know what this record is (or Children's Hospital either), u saying I would like it? what's it like? I need some new rock

dmr, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

the rebel is one of the dudes from the Country Teasers. The new LP was recorded at FMU and features the touring line-up from last year--mostly Country Teasers members. They are often compared to the Fall. I like them. Wordy. Children's hospital is more of a weirdo-punk thing, but if yer diggin the new der TPK I'd give it a listen.

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Friday, 9 January 2009 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

theyre the newest releases from mississippi records, outta portland. the PPN is a straight reissue, and it's awesome. id never listened to him before, but he sings two long ragas with tabla and sitar accompaniment, and he coughs toward the end of the second side. then starts again.

oh graveyard you cant hold me always is the newest mississippi records blues comp -- theres a lot of talk about it on the MS recs thread...

69, Saturday, 10 January 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Zavvi clearout got me the Red Hot Disco Express comp mentioned upthread (down w/ most of this), New York Dolls s/t, Kraftwerk 'Trans Europe Express', Curtis Mayfield 'Superfly OST' and The JBs 'Food For Thought', total price £17.

Today: bought the Suicide / Lydia Lunch 10" from the Suicide series that Blast First just did. Two versions of 'Frankie Teardrop'. Lydia's version is pretty badass. Also got a 7" which has Human League and Manicured Noise tracks on either side, remixed by the guy from Lemon Jelly - he seems to be sticking his fingers in some interesting pies despite being, you know, from Lemon Jelly, and this seems to have a cool thing going on. Might investigate Manicured Noise a bit more

Witch Queen's LP .. I just checked my "W" shelf and can't find my copy; I must have mis-filed it

Yep, I'd filed it under "Which Queen." Before White Stripes. What the hell was I thinking? Anyway, I have it now -- whew.

Got an "LP + junk" (words on the customs label) in the post today, addressed to someone whose name I don't recognise, and we probably get about four previous households' worth of junk mail etc here form time to time. It came from Portland and the name on the return address is also the name of a dude from 3at Sku11 - not a super unusual name, just struck me as odd. I don't like opening parcels (your honour) but I dunno how else I might have a hope of getting this to its actual destination...

Pescetarian Reich (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago) link

surely you can contact whichever guy from eat skull? mcgonig4l to thread?

ian, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

I guess! He'll either think I'm a good samaritan or a random weirdo depending on if it's his parcel or no

Pescetarian Reich (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:53 (fifteen years ago) link

OK yeah it's the dude who does Exiled Records, the address on here is on a side street to the one listed on their site - I'll email him and see what's up. Very odd

had a nice blowout to help the zavvi administrators today. found a different teevee record 'knockout round 2', a compilation of mid 70s hits. david dundas 'blue jeans' swung it for me, and at £2 was a bargain.

the cut-out vinyl was down 50% so £1 a piece. it shames me to list the likes of bruce hornsby, howard jones, fgth, but there will be the odd gem or even just a moment on those i'm sure. some other £1s:

v/a - this is fort apache (compilation with the likes of sebadoh, lemonheads, billy bragg, radiohead)
willie nelson & waylon jennings - outlaw reunion vol.2
richie cole/hank crawford quintet - bossa international
dobie gray - midnight diamond
dave and don grusin - sticks and stones
shadowfax - too far to whisper [yes, gandalf's horse, but a windham hill issue]
jerry harrison - casual gods
mac davis

and at half price two 180g pressings of 'the band' and 'music from big pink' were a tenner each. i was on a roll by then.

even the double cd (*cough*) of pacific ocean blue was 7 and the elvis complete 68 comeback special (limited ed. box) down to 12.

manchester residents might recall a great shop called 'power cuts', home to remainders, cut outs, lost canadian pressings. their sales days were not to be missed, and for a few seconds today it felt like i was back in that dank basement...

whatever, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago) link

didn't know tim cohen has a new LP out. looking fwd to that, as the two sides of tim cohen was one of my favorites of 2009. still bummed that it was received so harshly in certain circles. deserves to be heard by a lot more people.
