Love Barn Owl, but I didn't vote for it here. Didn't really consider it metal.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Thursday, 19 January 2012 04:46 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry that I missed out on this. Just got back on board today. Nice list!

Nate Carson, Thursday, 19 January 2012 04:53 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I like Barn Owl well enough but not enough to vote for them (I don't think).

I will put my hand up and admit I voted for Barn Owl. If we're crying "not metal" then Shooting Guns are a prime candidate too IMO.

Anyone going to predict the top 10 to see if they're right tomorrow?

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 19 January 2012 10:06 (twelve years ago) link

hey guys. what'd i miss?

Ioannis, Thursday, 19 January 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

Some cool albums

I am sticking with my Uncle Acid/Liturgy/YOB top 3 though I do admit that I forgot about Mastodon, but I maintain that'll place maybe 4th or 5th

Others in the top 10:

Corrupted
WITTR
Esoteric
Psychic Paramount
Subrosa
Indian

I love that Psychic Paramount record but didn't vote for it. Self-censored it as "not metal."

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 January 2012 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

and Indian placed yesterday.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 January 2012 13:50 (twelve years ago) link

Corrupted will do well, maybe top 3.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:04 (twelve years ago) link

Lol. I forgot Indian already placed. Alright, swap that out with 40 Watt Sun.

wow, low! I think I would have predicted this as top ten. It's good, but definitely more of the same.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:17 (twelve years ago) link

I loved The Bees Made Honey... but this record didn't grab me at all. Didn't put me off, just wasn't captivated like I had been before.

Love the cover though.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

Their new one has a good cover too, in the same style.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:31 (twelve years ago) link

I hope the new one gets me hooked on the band again.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 19 January 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago) link

10 subscribers to the spotify playlist btw, if anyone cares

speaking of 10, i only voted for 10 albums, so i guess if the collected works of bruce lamont haven't placed yet, they probably won't :(
campaign for presidetn cancelled

also, has anyone predicted primordial? if not, i predict.

48. Mitochondrion - Parasignosis (506 Points, 18 Votes)

“Making quite an impression and becoming a force within the death metal underground with their self-released, now out of print “Archaeaeon” debut, where the band introduced the death metal world with their brand of time-stretching vitriolic complex brutal ambient death metal. The band would inevitably gain the reputation as one of Canada’s most devastating and creative death metal bands today. And, since the state within the current landscape of Canadian death metal today hasn’t really shown its promise in what seems like ages, MITOCHONDRION (who initially hailed from the area that encases the infamous Ross Bay cemetery) would begin to help signal a paradigm shift and lead a movement destined to bring awareness to where the new elite sanctions within the Canadian extreme metal scene now lie.”

47. Dalriada - Igeret (507 Points, 20 Votes)
http://www.cdinzane.com/images/P/Dalriada-IGERET.jpg
http://www.last.fm/music/Dalriada

. The hungarian Dalriada www.dalriada.hu

Dalriada was formed in Sopron, Hungary in February 2003 with the intention of combining metal and Hungarian folk music, thus fostering the incredibly rich heritage of Hungarian folk art. Due to other influences some elements of death and gothic metal are also present.

The word „Dalriada” can be familiar to many people. It’s a historical name, the name of the first kingdom of the Scots, but based on some linguistic studies it may have an ancient Hungarian origin with the meaning of “battle-song”. From 2003 until the end 2006 the name of the band was “Echo Of Dalriada” in order emphasize the Hungarian meaning, but at the beginning of 2007 the name was simplified to “Dalriada” to have a shorter name without English words in it.

The genre of Dalriada’s music is folk metal, since Hungarian folk elements, folk song extracts and even some Hungarian folk-song covers are included in the repertoire of the band. Nonetheless, the music is fundamentally described as metal, with influences ranging from heavy to gothic or death.

The lyrics are mostly sung in Hungarian and almost entirely self-made, with the exception of those taken from folk songs and from the works of a famous Hungarian poet - Janos Arany.

46. Korpiklaani - Ukon Wacka (509 Points, 17 Votes)
http://www.invisibleoranges.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Korpiklaani-Ukon-Wacka-2011.jpg
Spotify
http://www.last.fm/music/Korpiklaani

Korpiklaani is a folk metal band from Lahti, Finland formed in 2003. Korpiklaani is the new name of the band previously called Shaman, that was formed by Jonne Järvelä who still remains the mastermind of Korpiklaani. Whilst Shaman recorded songs in the original Saami language, Korpiklaani recorded most songs in English at first, and mostly Finnish lyrics on their most recent albums.

The music of Korpiklaani ranges from the violin-and-guitar paean to the Finnish god of fermentation Pellonpekko, to the “typical” themed metal Wooden Pints, to Crows Bring The Spring, which is strongly reminiscent of “Ride the Lightning” era Metallica.

There has been some collaboration between Korpiklaani and other bands from the folk metal scene, such as Finntroll, for which Järvelä provided the yoiking for the title track of their album Jaktens Tid, and Skiltron, for which Järvelä provided vocals on the track ‘Praying is Nothing’ from their second full-lenght album.

In the year 2007 Korpiklaani left napalm records to sign with Nuclear Blast Records. They released their new album “Korven Kuningas” in 2008, touring Europe and playing some festivals shortly afterwards. In 2009, they toured the United States and Canada as the headliners for Paganfest II.
