Born in different parts of country, brewed in the depths of Chicago, Indian have grown to be chiefs of doom in the Midwest and around the U.S. since their first show in early ‘03. Their slow-sludge guitars, demon-esque vocals and mad smart rhythms make the three piece pure sophisticated evil.
Indian’s first recording, Godslave, released in 2004, quickly became an underground favorite for doomers across the country. The band names influences as Alice Cooper, Miles Davis, and the Melvins. Playing shows with the likes of High On Fire, YOB, Yakuza, Weedeater, Macabre, Alabama Thunderpussy and old friends Buried at Sea, Indian’s live shows continue to grow. Chicago fans regularly schedule late night encores for the band in the numerous clubs they’ve invaded throughout the city. After having toured the Midwest and Southern U.S., the band released their debut full length, The Unquiet Sky on Seventh Rule Recordings in September 2005. In 2007 the band released their follow up album Slights And Abuse , followed by the Sycophant one year later. Both albums were recorded by Sanford Parker at Volume Studios (Lair of the Minotaur, Pelican, Minsk) in Chicago. In the same year their label re-released both albums together on one CD as Slights and Abuse/The Sycophant. Indian’s mix of slow heavy rhythms and tempo sensitive noise create a style raw and pure as punk, but the sound is definitely some of the heaviest, darkest metal you will ever hear.
Guiltless, latest album to date, saw light of day in 2011.

That Krux was my #8. My top doom pick is either Elder, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats or Lord Vicar, depending on what you consider doomy doom. Hope Obrero made the list too.

Anaal Nathrakh is a metal band formed in Birmingham, UK in 1999 that fuse industrial and grindcore elements into an underlying black metal style. The band is signed to Feto Records, which is run by Anaal Nathrakh’s Mick Kenney and Shane Embury (Napalm Death, Brujeria, Lock Up, Venomous Concept)

The name comes from Merlin’s Charm of Making in John Boorman’s Excalibur (1981). Given Michael Everson’s transcription, Anaal Nathrakh means “serpent’s breath”.

Anaal Nathrakh is typically described as black metal, despite eschewing the aesthetic of many black metal bands, dressing in a casual manner, as opposed to the theatrical corpsepaint and spiked leather clothing traditionally favored by the black metal subculture.

The band originally started as a raw black metal band, but soon changed to blackened grindcore. Through the use of distorted samples, sound effects and programmed drums, much of its work also falls into the industrial metal category, though the band uses no keyboards.

Lyrics are not published, and, prior to their employment of clean vocals, facetious rumors abounded that the band didn’t have any actual lyrics since the vocals were completely incomprehensible. But from the song titles, increasingly common clean passages, and information given in interviews, the band’s work seems to revolve around apocalyptic themes, the nature of mortality, and misanthropy.

Anaal Nathrakh, like many black metal bands, draw much inspiration from the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche, exemplified by such song titles as “Human, All Too Fucking Human” and “Revaluation of All Values.”

This Dutch three-piece delivers what can only be described as mammoth walls of mountainous fuzz. Picture the mighty Kyuss rejoined after a 15-year hiatus! Somehow Sungrazer have been moulded to the very roots of stoner/desert rock, a venture that has so often been tried and, time and time again, never succeeded. Sungrazer are perfect example of how good music can sound when three musicians work in unison and collaborate as a whole.

stoner rock sadly got in a rut in the last 10 years but when it gets it right, it can still be majestic. Sungrazer get it RIGHT!

A couple of thoughts on today thus far (I honestly meant to check in today but life got crazy).

Happy to see some of my favorite records show up - Witch Mountain, Sungrazer and Shooting Guns. My thoughts on each, copied from my tumblr blog:

69. Witch Mountain

It’s getting called doom because it leans toward the slow and heavy sound of the early 70s, but there are some things they do that other doom bands rarely aim for or achieve. Firstly, they swing like motherfuckers (something Sabbath doesn’t get enough credit for, by the way). Nate Carson’s drumming and Dave Hoopaugh’s bass are one unit, the pocket so enveloping it’s like a 40 Hz womb. Secondly, Rob Wrong’s guitar is one of the least Iommi-inspired of anyone mining that “Hand Of Doom” vein; there is a lot of psychedelic rock in his sound (listen to that fuzz and feedback), to these ears owing more to the Hendrix/Uli Jon Roth lineage than the Iommi/Wino side of things. Top that off with vocalist Uta Plotkin’s power blues delivery and this ain’t your everyday doom band.

58. Sungrazer

I like slow, spacey, epic psychedelic hard rock. These guys do it well, and with Mirador, their second album, they’ve achieved something very special. There’s a bit of desert rock ala Kyuss in this one, but it’s got more peyote than Pabst in that groove. I found it worked for all moods, weather and seasons.

57. Shooting Guns

I’m partial to instrumental metal, if only because so many of the vocals drive me nuts. These guys don’t worry about anything beyond monster grooves. Their hypnotic heaviness often reminds me of Loop, minus a bit of the Stooges and amplifying the Hawkwind with a dash of late 80s doom ala The Obsessed or something. Feel the groove, love the groove, live the groove.

I need to hear the Indian record again - it didn't grab me on the first go 'round and I don't remember giving it another. Should rectify that soon.

I f-ing love Sungrazer. While they're my #12 overall (including non-metal), I didn't vote for them, as I wanted to focus on metal. If there was a stoner rock rut, there certainly isn't this year.

The Sungrazer record is odd in that if I haven't listened to it for a while it slips in my estimation, but then I throw it on and BAM I'm hooked and loving it.
