What kind of car do you have? I had that same kind of coffee table (EVERYBODY in the free world has that coffee table!) and I fit it in a hatchback. A Prius, I think. I don't think they're too hard to take apart, if you have to. The tables, not Priuses.

You have a hatchback, don't you? If you have fold the back seats down, you should be fine.

Yeah but I have a tiny hatchback, a yaris. It should fit, but it could stick out the back a bit.

Sara had that exact coffee table when I met her, so this will be exciting.

the emancipation of distraction (askance johnson), Sunday, 15 January 2012 02:00 (twelve years ago) link

Oh right, I've been in that car.

It will fit, even if you have to leave the hatchback open.

I don't know why I'm involving myself in this.

Amanda and I IMed earlier and I was going to go (not to dance, just to judge people) but then I got a Garfield grade nap attack at 8:00 and it was over.

Je55e, Sunday, 15 January 2012 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

I was in the depths of codeine-induced sleep. (Still coughing at night (and during the day, come or think of it), not actually addicted to codeine. Yet.)

The only thing to judge was that a Daily Show guy was doing stand-up beforehand and decided to try out an extra half-hour of new material. This meant that the club was at capacity, so there was a long wait to get in, until the comedy show let out. Other than that, some club-sapphic pairs of gals, just a few dudes being bros, a few pairs of dancers who took over big swaths of the dance floor, and other than that everyone was who there were and the music was all great.

phillip and i watched episodes of archer and venture bros until we went to bed

tanuki, Sunday, 15 January 2012 16:49 (twelve years ago) link

Also guess what -- not tired, only had 1 beer, feeling good. Staying up til 4 isn't as taxing as it may appear! I've done it several times recently, in fact!

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:04 (twelve years ago) link

I was kidding about judging. And I was thinking about Jeff's advice to someone on ILX, "Dance like everybody's judging you." (who was that?)

Corey, there will be new Archer episodes soon!

Je55e, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

So guess what? I started a thread on ILM last night and it was not a disaster. Worst Pixies song

Je55e, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link

xp it was my first time watching it. i think i like it more than sealab, but i'd need to see more eps to tell

tanuki, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:07 (twelve years ago) link

Archer v. Sealab is very much apples an oranges IMO.

Je55e, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link

they share some writers don't they?

tanuki, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:15 (twelve years ago) link

Marduk commands you to reconsider your opinion.

Jeff, Sunday, 15 January 2012 17:33 (twelve years ago) link

Oh I don't know.

I just meant that the styles are very different, though thinking about it now I can see some intersections. The characters are all kind of jerky and the jokes are often somewhat blue. But Sealab is more about absurdism and non-sequitirs. Archer eps stick w/ their story and characters rather than veer off into stuff like the 5:00 long "UH OH!" bit.

Wyatt Cenac? I know he was in town this week.

Yeah, we even saw him walk around the building when they wouldn't let us in. He stayed for the dance party too, but was not dancing.

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 January 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

Btw he was cute, smaller than I expected, and had a beard. Lotsa dull jokes though, including lol buying condoms is embarrassing.

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 January 2012 20:54 (twelve years ago) link

Wow. That's really bad.

Je55e, Sunday, 15 January 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago) link

tres leches, i used some of that dried mango powder. my stir-fry is now deliciously tangy.

tanuki, Sunday, 15 January 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

awesome!!! i hope you sang "lemme tang it" while you were cooking :)

La Lechera, Sunday, 15 January 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

Hey sorry I didn't check in. Hope the coffee table transportation went OK <3

Je55e, Monday, 16 January 2012 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I think Wyatt Cenac was on a live episode of WTF not too long ago and I was kinda ~shrug~ about him. Not that that's the best venue to judge someone as a performer, but it seemed like he was mostly coasting on charm.

can't do tonight as per empty bottle show as previously discussed. seems like it's going to be pretty poorly attended (tuesday night plus snow in the forecast). i'm now playing bass on three songs and keyboards on two songs, instead of just autoharp all the time, plus singing backups on a couple of songs, which is fun.
too bad, "stand-up comedians" is a good category.

how was your show?

La Lechera, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

Gaahahdsafwh Nick, I wanted to go to your stupid show and I only remembered it last night at about 9:30. I need a social secretary.

Je55e, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:36 (twelve years ago) link

i've been playing in my friend's band for about a year, most of the time i play autoharp. last night we're playing a show, we're a fairly quiet band, and a drunk guy decides that the middle of a song is a good time to wander up and ask what the instrument i'm playing is called. i try to just stare him down, he says "you don't know what it's called? ok" and wanders away. kinda put me in an odd funk for the rest of the set.

the club also arbitrarily pushed back the start of the music by an hour, literally minutes after we were talking about how we liked playing there because they're so professional

i think it was fine but i was in a weird mood after having to wait around with nothing to do for the four hours between sound check and our set, plus the drunk guy, plus an annoying opening band. there were a surprising number of people there though, i guess because free show.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

should've kicked drunk guy in the forehead imo

long duk dan (dan m), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:01 (twelve years ago) link

four hours is a long time, geez
i'd be antsy
at least there were people there, even though one of them was drunk guy?

La Lechera, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:25 (twelve years ago) link

Empty Bottle is only good for rock. The rest gets drowned out by yayhoos.

do you not like slouching? (Eazy), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

i've seen some great loud jazz shows there, and folk stuff too but there were as many times that the singer had to yell STFU.

La Lechera, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:45 (twelve years ago) link

one of my favorites was seeing alasdair roberts with like 20 other people including the bartender
i remember there being a LOT of problems when we went to see lavender diamond though. that was a long time ago, eh?

La Lechera, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, and I tried seeing Azita there a time or two, to no avail.

do you not like slouching? (Eazy), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link

bert jansch was great though, and no one bothered him because everyone was there to see him

La Lechera, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

i've definitely seen quiet bands get overwhelmed by crowd noise there (whoever opened for bill callahan/smog that time i went with jeff), or sometimes they try to make quiet bands LOUD to compensate and lose the dynamics, which i think was more what happened with us - they had the bass pumped, which isn't really appropriate for our songs.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

I was hoping this was about the proposed new stop on the Yellow Line that would be blocks from my house. That would be great.
