This morning my L train driver announced that the train was going express from Lorimer to Union Square. Whenever they announce that I think "you fucked up, didn't you"

extremely lewd and incredibly crass (Hurting 2), Thursday, 12 January 2012 14:21 (twelve years ago) link

a lot of the time they do that when one train get delayed and the one behind it catches up

max, Thursday, 12 January 2012 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

That's what I always figured. Either that or there is a slow train- maybe even a work train- before it on the local track.

What MTA page had the explanations? Not finding them....

Fulton/Broadway station mildly NUTSO this morn, since it's still under construction and only small passageways are open between each set of points. Add crazy religions lady shouting the gospel over everyone else's heads, and I wanted to go back home.

Ah, thanks--I see. Not much info, though, is it.

Truth be told I feel like some of those reasons they post were already timed out by the time I got on the train although maybe there were lingering effects.

Maybe the general lack of info is not knowing how to explain the gremlins thing to the public

Is it just me or are subways getting much louder/screechier lately? Like is the MTA saving money by skimping on the WD40 or something? It's killing me -- Union Square green line in particular.

frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Sunday, 29 January 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

Don't know about screechier, but certainly funkier.

Oh man sound of MTA train leaving the station is one of my favorite sounds ever

tropical mall lady (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 29 January 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

I like that normal high-pitched whir you hear, followed by the lower but rising whir. That's a great sound. I'm talking about ear-piercing screech that sounds like it's from the wheels scraping against something. I don't hear it in every station.

frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Sunday, 29 January 2012 22:46 (twelve years ago) link

Truth be told, the whole subway system has been giving me some kind of Jacob's Ladder sensation that I never really made it out of the seventies.

union square 4/5/6 platform is bendy, which probably makes it worse, though i don't know why it would be worse *now*

in montreal the metro wheels are rubber-coated

it's a shame cause it would really benefit a lot of outer borough neighborhoods that have to deal w/ painfully loud els, but nope, no easy solution for the noise

iatee, Sunday, 29 January 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

Due to the Giants parade, Tue, Feb 7, the 4, 5, A, C, E and R trains will skip some stations in lower Manhattan.

Beginning at 10 a.m., to prevent overcrowding conditions, trains will NOT stop at these five stations. Wall St 4 or 5, City Hall R, Chambers St A or C, World Trade Center E or Fulton St 4, 5, A or C.

- 241 pedestrians or cyclists were killed by drivers last year. Only 17 of the drivers responsible faced criminal charges.

- The NYPD issued more summonses to cyclists than truck drivers last year: truckers got 14,962 moving violation summonses and 10,415 Criminal Court summonses, while cyclists got 13,743 moving violation summonses and a whopping 34,813 Criminal Court summonses. Priorities!

iatee, Friday, 17 February 2012 19:36 (twelve years ago) link

What?! Man, I've never heard of anyone in PHL getting a cycling citation. Is NYC in partic super nuts abt this or am I just oblivious?

I do remember that YouTube dude who got a ticket for not being in the bike lane, though. That pissed me off.

Can anyone tell me why there are no stops between Houston and 14th on the east side? Like, I really, really thought they'd be building one on the new T but the fact that they're not makes me thing that it's somehow structurally/whatever-ally impossible.

two weeks pass...

http://gothamist.com/2012/03/08/these_are_the_top_ten_most_dangerou.php

You can check out the specifically NYC Statistics here. Below is the list of the top 10 most dangerous roads to walk along New York City:

1. Broadway (Manhattan), with 13 pedestrians killed from 2008-2010.
2. Broadway (The Bronx), 7 killed.
3. Kings Highway (Brooklyn), with 7 killed
4. Henry Hudson Parkway (Manhattan), 7 Killed
5. Atlantic Avenue (Brooklyn) 7 killed
6. Jamaica Avenue (Queens) 6 killed
7. Grand Concourse (Bronx), 6 killed
8. Brighton Beach Avenue (Brooklyn) 6
9. Amsterdam Avenue (Manhattan) 6
10. Union Turnpike (Queens) 6

As a post script, in poring through the reports, we also made some interesting discoveries:
■As you may have noticed, Queens Boulevard somehow managed to avoid being in the top ten.
■The deadliest road in the Tri State area is in Nassau County, not in Manhattan.
■Suffolk County and Burlington, New Jersey have roads more dangerous than in any of the other five boroughs.
■Brooklyn had more pedestrian fatalities (139) in the past three years than any other borough (75 in the Bronx, 101 in Manhattan, 125 in Queens, and 23 in Staten).
■According to the maps, the highest concentration of deaths in Brooklyn appears to be in Brighton Beach; in Manhattan its the Lower East Side/Chinatown.

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:44 (twelve years ago) link

the numbers prob should be adjusted for length of street tho, 'broadway' means nothing really. still interesting.

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

Saw a hipster Miss Havisham on the C train today.

Everything You POLL Is RONG (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 14 March 2012 03:09 (twelve years ago) link

I timed it today: F train takes 33 minutes to go between 74th Street/Roosevelt Avenue and Jay Street/Borough Hall. Next will time G train plus E train from Hoyt/Schermerhorn for comparison.

Radio Boradman (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 March 2012 20:39 (twelve years ago) link

ha we also took the f from Jackson heights to Brooklyn today. the problem is that you'd have to adjust for the frequency of the lines, like if you caught the g as it left it'd be fine but you can't expect to, esp on a weekend. I think you could probably calculate the ~ideal trip~ by looking at time tables online. would imagine the f is generally a better choice, maybe not during a peak hour.

iatee, Sunday, 18 March 2012 21:53 (twelve years ago) link

Hm. Just tried the trip planner and the top two results were to take the F for a duration of 34 minutes. The third was to take the R for a duration of 46 minutes.

Radio Boradman (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

The R doesn't go through Jay Street/Borough Hall does it? Or maybe there's a transfer, through a tunnel or above ground with metrocard

Radio Boradman (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 18 March 2012 22:51 (twelve years ago) link

Seems like the G to E transfer would be about the same if the transfer time were zero. Or under 5 minutes.
